OMG! There is a snake in my bathroom

I feel badly for you. No-one likes a surprise right before bed-time. But, unless it was poisonous I wouldn't panic. We have a pet snake in this house, his name is SNAKEY. It's what you get when you tell a 1st grade boy he can have anything he wants for a great report card:rolleyes: But I don't touch it, I don't mind it exactly but am not a huge fan of how strong & disconnected the thing is either, that's DH's job. Anyhow, they are not generally aggressive creatures and only seem interested in what they can eat. If I had one wander in I'd be wondering what it followed in here to eat so I'd call an exterminator to #2, get rid of it and #2, check to see if I had a rodent problem. Wild rodents are way dirtier than snakes IMO. Snakes are not slimy at all and feel more like a the kitchen sink sprayer hose than anything else. They only go to the bathroom after they eat, which isn't very often, and ALL of their waste is dry. Not messy at all.

Please share what happens... your kids are going to be the buzz in school today:goodvibes

It wouldn't suprise me if the snake came in to catch a mouse. I live out in the country and this time of year, there are always mice that get in. Try as I might, I can't ever seem to stop them completely.

The kids don't know about it. I didn't tell them.

I give you a lot of credit for staying the night. I would have left the house and never looked back.:rotfl:

Seriously, I would call pest control. I would think they would be able to seal up your house so it won't happen again. Critters can get into the smallest cracks and crevices and into your house. You could just call them and see if that is a service they provide, it's worth it for your peace of mind!

First, I'd Google to see whether it's a poisonous snake. If so, I'd call pest control. If not, I would get a broom or shovel... something with a long handle and gently pick it up/push it out the house (maybe transfer it into a box or bucket with a lid?) and then move it outside as far from the house as possible.

My DD5 loves all things icky (and if I let her) would be happy to pick the snake up and move it for you.

I would have flipped out too, no worries! One of my biggest fears is going into the bathroom, getting ready to sit..looking down and seeing a snake coming out of the toilet. Irrational, I know, (particularly because we have well water) but such is life.

I finally got up enough nerve to go in there and I didn't see the snake. I carefully checked inside the cupboards. I did see a small opening next to the drain pipe where it could get in so I assume it went back out that way. I will be plugging up those holes today and also putting down some mothballs in the cupboards.

Ok, I'm gonna need to know where you live, so I don't accidentally move there when we are picking out our next place to live in a year and a half. :scared1:

Ugh! Living in FL that is one of my concerns that will eventually happen. And not knowing snakes, I would not know if it was highly venomous or completely harmless. I know DH has seen some in the yard occasionally. (One reason I am just not an outdoorsy person. :lmao: ) I don't mind them. As long as I admire them behind glass or in a distance.
I have chased frogs and those little chameleons out of the house, and even placed a spider or two outside. Snakes, not yet.
I had a co worker who once made the mistake of leaving her garage door and the door that leads into her kitchen open. She had a snake curled around her wall phone and had to ask the help of a neighbor guy to remove it. :worship:

DH was staying in a (newer) home in GA on business last month. He got up in the morning to get ready for work. It was still dark out and he saw some black blob on the shower/tub floor. Once he turned on the light he saw it was a huge toad. :confused3 He could only guess it squeezed up through the drain.

I can't begin to tell you how many snakes I've had in my house. :scared1: Yeah, I'm a snake-o-phobe or what ever it's called. Can't stand them. Totally creep me out. Luckily DH and DSs are not bothered by them.

When we first moved in we found a reeaaallllyyyy long skin on the workbench in the basement. But no snake so I was okay with that. Every so often, we still find the snake skins last time was as we were preparing for the pinewood derby. There was one about 4 ft long in the bins that the cars go in. Yeah, I was freaking out about that one.

Then there is the plethora of live and dead baby garters that we keep finding in the basement - some less than a foot long but most about a foot a few longer. A few in the rafters a few on the floor, one in the washing machine and two in the basement shower plus the one that crawled out of oldest DS' backpack in August. If they are alive DH or one of the kids usually will pick them up and put them back out in the woods. If they're dead I'll pick em up with a shovel and put them in the trash. But I'm totally totally skeeved out about the whole thing.

Then there was the day I opened the door and saw movement in a box at the bottom of the cellar stairs. It was NOT a garter but I didn't really think about that when all I could think about was it needed needed needed to get out of the house. I called in oldest DS to move the box outside to the woods. He took the box out to the woods and dumped the snake out. Afterward I said to DS let's look it up I've never seen that type of snake before - turns out it was a copperhead. :scared1: :scared1:

Snakes can come in through the drains (frogs too). Check my tag.

OP, where do you live? I would like to add it to my list of states not to move to. Thanks.

Where there is one, there are normally a bunch more..

Sounds like a garter snake the OP had and they live in bunches. Always a "nest" of them holed up. We had them in our crawlspace. They honestly did not bother my DH. I was not a huge fan, but it was late in the season when we moved in so in the spring we had them removed along with anything else when the exterminator came out.

OP is way braver than me! I would have been in my car with the cell phone finding a 24 hour pest control person! There is no such thing as a good snake EVER in my opinion! Mice, spiders...bring them on....as long as they have legs, I can cope!

I am with the hotel crowd! I can't even handle the little lizards that would get in when we lived in Florida. This summer though, back in New England, I have had my cats bring in their fair shair of mice and once a live chipmunk ... yeah I left that day with DS until someone else came home.

I couldn't sweep the snake out ... I have visions that it would suddenly be able to climb fast enough to get up the broom handle and on my arm. :scared1:

I've heard of that happening! I've heard of people taking a shovel or hoe to them, only to have the snake crawl up the handle. :scared1:

Yep, you're the one I mentioned in my post! Do you live in the country or something? OMG! My sister lives way in the boonies and I've never heard her talking about having one snake in the house let alone dozens. Holy crap, I think I'd be too scared to live in my own home.

I wouldn't have even made it to a hotel.. My DD would have been collecting a tidy sum from my life insurance policy!!!:eek::eek:

I would of been out of there!!!! I had a snake crawl out of the defroster vent on the dashboard of my car once while I was driving.

Long story short...I pulled the car over, got a ride home, never did drive or ride in that car again. I made dh switch vehicles w/ me for good until we got rid of it.

Oh my word!! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I would have wrapped the car around a tree! Eeeeeeeek!!!! :scared1:

Me too!!

OP: Whatever happened?

I went into the bathroom later that morning and looked around but didn't see the snake. I'm sure it went back out the way it came in. There is a small opening near the drain pipe, so I plugged that up. I'm so glad I didn't have to call someone to come out. It's been one thing after another lately with repairs and such, so I'm pretty tired of spending money on these sort of things.

Some times animal control will remove them for you.

If there is a small opening near the drain pipe try to caulk it closed or try some foam in a can to block him out.

We live out in the woods and last wed I went to the barn and opened up the side door to get to the overhead doors and :scared1: A real big corn snake just laying there looking at me LOL.

Ron.

AHHHHHHHH! I'm not super afraid of snakes, but if that had happened to me, I would have caused a major accident!

When I was growing up, we lived on this old farm. We had some sheds on property and I was playing with our neighbors in one. I was standing on a tabe and look down at the ground to see a HUGE, THICK black shape slithering through! I absolutely freaked out and high tailed it out of there! If that had been IN my house, though, I would have slept on the porch instead!!
