I can not believe it still!!! We were carving pumpkins today in class and I nicked my finger with the knife. Not a big cut but it was bleeding, when I grabbed a napkin to cover it before I cleaned it out our little girl who does not speak said" need bandaid" it was not much more than a wisper but I heard it and she looked at me and smiled.. I can not believe it!! For two years this child has not said a word, not a peep. not to a child or teacher. She will speak at home but no where else. And even at home she will only speak to her immedite family not even grandparents or uncles. So I asked her" would you like to help me put bandaid on? she nodded and we went to the office. She did not say another word all day but would look at me in the eye when I spoke.. Wow what a great feeling!!! Of course DH thinks I just need to continue to injure myself daily and she will be speaking in full sentances within a week. he said "he break your arm and see how that works!" aren't I lucky to be married to a comedian?!

what a great day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Sorry that you hurt yourself, but glad she spoke!

Thats wonderful! Hope she starts talking a blue streak soon. :D

Oh I was not really hurt, just a tiny nick, nothing more major than a paper cut... I am still in shock that she spoke and am trying to think of how to continue this..(without hurting myself ;) ) This has been such a GREAT day..

That is so wonderful. I bet you were walking on air for the rest of the day.

Ann,

That is just amazing. I am fascinated by what will 'unlock' these poor little ones. My cousin has a son with profound Autism, and every so often, we will catch a glimpse of 'what might have been' and then we all go crazy, trying to figure out what might have triggered it.

What a great day you had, and what a great feeling it must have been. And, just think, you have 9 more fingers you can 'nick' . You could keep her talking for almost 2 weeks. ::yes:: :teeth:

oh I am walking on air.. her mom could not believe it when I told her.!!!!!!

Sorry you cut yourself but how exhilarating that little the girl spoke.

Well, bless her little heart! She is an empathetic child who felt your pain. It moved her to speak! Very touching.:D

sounds real exciting :D , why doesnt she talk

"selectively mute" it means she had the ability to speak but for various resasons will not. It has been a HUGE concern for her parents that she will not speak but this was such an AMAZING day everyone is thrilled. I told Jay I would happilly cut myself every day if it would work, but I really think it was the spontenaity that made her talk.. I am hoping that it will start to happen more and more.

How wonderful for you! I am a pre-school teacher myself, so I can almost put myself in your shoes. I know how much I treasure each tiny step "my kids" take. Your little sweetie just took a giant leap!

I was a HUGE leap.. her parents have been very concerned.. they have been discussing therapy etc. and I have been trying to gently tell them that to just let things be. When mom would say daily " I hope today you will speak (child's name)" when dropping her off or when picking her up "did she speak today" right infront of the child I am sure that was not condicive to her feeling comfortable to talk. I must admit that after two years I was getting a big worried myself but WOW what a great day! Now what can I do to keep it up?
