OMG! Received a beneficiary letter!

I am very happy for you. I think everyone hopes they get a letter or a phone call like that. Anyway, I was also very suspicious when I was reading this. I unfortunately have never received any money from being a beneficiary so I don't know the process. But before I would give out my social security number or a bank account, I would do a lot of calling around. I am a little too suspicious about the comment that if your husband doesn't claim the money, some other person can claim it. I really would call the headquarters to Metlife and tell them the situation. I wouldn't go to the local agency. Go to the top.

I am curious as to the outcome as well!!! I am hoping for the best for you. My dad's policies originated in the 1950 and they ranged from $10,000 to $60,000 - which was a lot of money then and is still a nice chunk of change now!!!!

How nice you and your family were nice to your husband's aunt. That meant a lot to her for sure whether the claim is legit or not.

It all sounds good to me. I am betting its for real!

This is why I hope it is legitimate because it is not unheard of a family member with no children to do such things. She appreciated your husbands kindness and for you all to include her in the family function. It probably meant a whole lot for her. I say good for you and your DH. If anything it is a lesson that sometimes it pays to be nice to people because you never know where that might lead you.

If you're concerned about the legitimacy of these funds, LET the money go to the state; then, when your DH's name appears on the State Treasurer's Unclaimed Funds list (published twice a year in Massachusetts, can't help you with any other state), he can claim the money following the state's requirements.

Since you weren't expecting it anyway, what's a few more months/couple of years? Seriously.

Anyway, when unclaimed funds are sent to the state, it's NOT so that any relative can claim the money. It's so that the proper person can be alerted and claim it.

Yes, we are anxious to find out more information. I will keep you all posted. We're not looking for much, so if it is more than we expected then we will REALLY be surprised! She didn't have children and if I remember correctly, in her senior days at the nursing home, she had a baby doll that she considered her child. Maybe she kind of thought my hubby was her child in some way. He was raised by his mother and grandmother, so I'm sure she was part of that also. Just waiting now...

I have no idea if it's legit, but I do wish the OP'r luck! I do know that legitmate well known insurance companies do come look for the beneficiaries, because I got one of those phone calls. I was at work when I got the phone call asking if my dh had passed away(they identified themselves and I have caller ID, so I definitely know it was State Farm). I work with my DH, thank God, so I told the caller I'm pretty sure he's alive, but let me stand up and lean to the right, yup there he is I can see him (my dh) in the next room and he's definitely still alive! Someone with the same name right down to the Jr. and same state, different county though, had died.

Well I believe this is totally legit - you are working with a real insurance company and their job IS to pay off the beneficiaries. I would absolutely NOT let this go to the state for others to be able to lay claim to.

My husband had an Aunt who left him a large sum of money and he had no idea it was forth coming. She had no children or other relatives so this is certainly not unheard of!

I know people need to be cautious but seriously it would be quite a scam to find a guy, figure out who is Aunt was many years ago, put all the pieces together and for what...not sure what the scammers would get out of this. Again I believe this is for real and hope you get all the details soon.
