OMG Martha's GUILTY!!

I believe that she knew what was going on. I don't believe she was nnocent at all. And as far as "she was doing what her broker told her to"...Martha Stewart was the CEO of a multi-million or maybe billion $$ company. She knows full well the definition of "insider trading" and what it entails, and what the consequences are. Ignorance cannot be used as a defense here.

That being said, I am unsure of what her prison term should be. She is hardly a "dangerous" criminal in the true sense of that word.

Perhaps suffering total financia ruin and having to live like us mere mortals will be punishment enough.

It's a shame what greed and the quest for power will make a person do.:(

Martha was a stockbroker at one time. She knew full well she was receiving insider information. She knew full well she was breaking the law when giving the order to sell. There are a lot of people who are charged with insider trading every year, you just don't hear about them because they are not as high profile as Martha Stewart.

Couldn't of said if better myself. AMEN!!!

Well, geez, I hope she does end up in jail...let's her off the streets and protect our families!

There are a helluva lot of other people far more deserving of incarceration who are walking the streets. But I guess it's not as "fun" to picture them in prison.

Look, there's criminals that deal drugs to your kids and there's criminals who sit on the NYSE board and make insider trades - they're all criminals, they all broke the law. Sentencing will determine how vile the crime is and she will probably be sent to Danbury, but if these charges stick, she is still a criminal. All criminals should be taken off the streets, per se.

Do I enjoy seeing people who have behaved like they are above the law get busted? You bet I do.

Are there people more deserving of incarceration? Of course there are. Does that make her crime more palatable? Not one iota.

People go to jail every day for shoplifting. You know the consequences of your actions and have to face the penalty if you are caught.

Unfortunately, both Martha Stewart's company and K-Mart are going to be negatively effected by this. K-Mart has aligned themselves too closely with her brand. Brand experts are already predicting that if Martha goes to jail it will be impossible for her branded items to recover.

I almost feel bad for her. Oh wait....no I don't!

I heard on the news that if she gets a sentence in the range of 16 months she will likely to go a "prison" that we would never recognize as such. They said it was more like a farm.

I resent that my tax dollars were spent on a multi-week jury trial of this nature. She should have been given a stiff fine and sent on her way. She [wrongully] made $45,000, yet she's been made the poster child for "corporate greed." The Enron guys made hundreds of millions and caused others to lose hundreds of millions more. Let's put our limited resources to better use.

The ones that may suffer the most are her employees. Especially if this negatively impacts her bottom line. I just hope that don't have to worry about any layoffs in the near future.

Let's just take her $$$$$ - fine her up the waazoo! That'll hurt her more than anything. As for a deterent for others not to do this - everybody thinks that they'll never do anything wrong - or get caught. Her going to jail won't do anything - give the gov't her money!! (reduce the nat'l debt!!)

This is my point exactly. It should never have been allowed to go this far. Was she never offered a plea deal? And, what was the point of her defense? One witness and then closing arguments!

I dont feel famous people should go to jail

On the news this evening, she allegedly turned down a plea deal. She figured that she would be exonerated at a jury trial.

edited to correct typo

If she had done this to anyone here - stolen your 45,000.00 would you not want her in jail? Why should she get special treatment because of her celebrity.

A thief is a thief is a thief, any other explanation tell that to the people hurt in ENRON.

She broke the law. She used insider info, not from her broker but from the CEO of the company. He advised her to sell because he knew the FDA would not approve a new drug the company was manfacturing. The stock was going to bottom out. That is illegal, she shoud go to jail.

Just because she did not use a gun does not make her less a thief.

Also let us not forget these are federal charges and she has to serve 85% of any sentence given. She did turn down a plea that involved repayment and probation because a person with a felony conviction cannot sit on a board of any publicly traded company.

So BUH BYE Martha. :wave2:

I wonder who gets to strip search her - LOL!!

Then she's an idiot. If she accepted the deal, she'd have been in the news briefly and then it would have been forgotten.

I had the same thought too. But, she keeps maintaining that she is innocent. I reckon she thought the jury would see i the same way too.

I haven't followed this too closely. I would think with a clean record and first time offense, she may get 1 to years. I would think it maybe something like 18 months suspended for a long parole period. I understand from what I have read she may be forced from running her company, because of the conviction if it holds.

She could have maintained her self-proclaimed innocense but still have taken the plea deal. If I had all of her wealth and power, I wouldn't risk it all for the sake of being called *innocent.* I'd be a fined, potentially guilty person lying on a beach with a mai tai.;)

she was convicted of lying, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. Not of insider trading!

She was never charged on insider trading.

Now... that said...

I think she'll look quite stunning in a striped gray outfit, working in the shop making license plates... or better yet... working in the prison call center taking orders for magazine subscriptions!:teeth:
