I am quickly approaching my 6 month mark and I can't beleive how much I still want a cigarette ALL THE TIME!

- sigh -

I still chew a few pieces of nicorette gum when I am totally crazed, but come on... 6 months and still feening SUCKS!!

I keep telling myself that I smoked for 30ish years, more than half my life, so I shouldnt expect quitting to go smoothly, but it SUCKS.

Dare I even mention how much weight I have gained :scared1:

Any other long term smokers/now ex smokers out there??

Does the feening ever stop?? (if it doesnt please lie to me lol)

- sigh -

When I die (many years from now) I want to be buried with a carton of smokes and a lighter :guilty:

It will be 9 years for me in January. I have to be honest and say that sometimes I still crave them, esp. when people around me are smoking, but those times are far and few between. I just try to remember how much healthier I am now, and believe me, I know about the weight gain. I put on 30 pounds.

6 months is a huge accomplishment, you should be proud and know that you can absolutely do this.

Probably the last thing you want to hear is that you should give up the Nicrette, but you really should. As long as you keep giving yourself nicotine, in whatever form, you are going to continue to crave it.

I don't know what else to tell you. You know this is a fight worth fighting, but there has to be one thing that motivates you to stay quit. For me, I would have been so disappointed and angry with myself if I had started back. I know it sounds stupid and trivial, but it worked. I was too proud to admit I was so weak.

So know that you are stronger than that. Oh, and give up the gum.

Not sure what that has to do with my feening for a cig, unless you think I should smoke them? :confused3

:rotfl2: I'd bet the point is that you should not smoke because of your children, etc. People who never smoked (though I can't be sure that was the case here) tend to think that these logical arguments work. They don't, sadly. Most of us started smoking knowing how bad it was for us, so it really doesn't make sense, does it?

Congrats on the 6-month smoke free mark! :thumbsup2 I'm coming up on the 10-month mark myself. Hang in there, it does - and will - get easier. I can honestly say at this point I have no craving whatsoever for a smoke, and my DW still smokes but it honestly doesn't bother me. (Well, it bothers me for her health's sake, but doesn't make me want to smoke again.) It's truly one of the best things I've ever done. I hesitate to say it's been liberating, but it sort of has been. No more worrying about where I can and can't smoke, no more wondering when I can sneak out and have that next smoke, no more worrying if I stink like smoke when I'm talking closely to someone. So hang in there. It's worth it. You can do it! :)

I hate smoke. It is so gross. I hate smoking. It turns me off.

I quit smoking YEARS ago.

All that being said--I still get pangs of "I NEED a cigarette":rolleyes1

I know that is not what you want to hear, but I don't think you ever get over "that" feeling.

I am sorry:hug:

BTW--WOW! Six months! That is awesome!

Ahh I see.

I am commited to this for many reasons, health, longer better life, kids, etc

It's not a commitment issue, its a feening issue. :sad2:

ckay87, you do make a point about the gum... I am down to 2 or 3 piece of the 2 mg gum a day. It helps me not bite the heads, of the for mentioned children, off :rotfl:

Just sucks :-(

It's been a year and a month for me. I get little "twinges" every once in a while, but not actual cravings anymore. I was a heavy long time smoker, so I agree with the pp that it has been liberating! The weight part...not so fun!

I feel your pain! You know the whole AA motto of one day at a time? You've got to think of it as one moment at a time. Every little bit you go without is so much better for you. Your lungs are already healing despite 30 years worth of damage.

I recently started back up again after having quit 9 years ago. The stress of losing my mother really got to me, so I'm struggling with it. I'll tell you one thing that really helped me with the cravings back when I first quit in 1999. Wellbutrin/Zyban. I went on Wellbutrin for depression with the added bonus that it took away ALL cravings. I couldn't believe it, but I didn't desire cigarettes even if I was standing right next to someone smoking. It's worth looking into!

If I don't get through this on my own, that's what I'm going to do. Good luck to you.

I just meant to say that because cigarettes shorten your life or the quality of your life, NOT smoking gives you more time (years) to spend with your kids. That would motivate me to stop craving them.

first off, congratulations on your 6 months smoke free. I have never smoked, so I can't say anything baout having that feeling go away, but DH does and he has struggled with trying to quit for years. I know it sucks. Just keep thinking positively....get you thorugh those rough spots....you can do it!

Dh just started taking Chantix to help stop smoking and he hates it :sad2: I was really hoping it would help him so he can quit for good but I don't think he's going to continue taking it. He said it makes him feel weird :confused3

I call it being a cig-a-holic. :lmao:
I quit for 5+yrs and now I have been smoking again since July, so 3 months back on the wagon.
I will quit again soon.

I am in the category of always wanting a cig. Never left me. Not going to lie to you. However realizing that for me is what helped me stay quit when I not smoking.

I quit for 3+yrs before that.

It is a one day at a time choice for me.;)

Congratulations. I stopped smoking over 25 yrs ago but the occasional cigarette craving still sneaks up on me from time to time. I just remember that if I smoke one it will start all over again.

Hang in there Laura!! It's been over 10 years for me and I went through a period this summer where I had these really satisfying smoking dreams. I was truly craving a cig, as a result I just went back to my twizzler habit. Twizzlers and Swedish fish are what I used to help me quit cold turkey. I gained a few pounds but it got me through the craving. Now I'm off the twizzlers and losing the pounds again.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!

I quit about 10 years ago. Just think, if you have one now, you'll lose the entire six months of agony you've already gone through. Don't do that to yourself. Keep at it.

But yes, even I get cravings now and again. You do learn to live with it.

Cig-a-holic is so dead-on! I hate when someone in the next car is smoking because I can smell it. Yuck.

You can do this! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:
