Today has been one one those days for me. I was taking my son to school today ,and he has to be to school by 6:30 a. m we live in ND so it it pitch black when we leave. we live out in the country and he goes to a in town school, so i was almost into town and what do i go and do , but hit a cat that was trying to decide if it should cross the road or not:eek: well needles to say he ran out in front of me I couldn't stop couldn't do anything but hit the poor thing.:sad2: like i said was dark out and was in a hurry to get son to school , so i didn't get out and see what happened i pretty much knew anyway. so comming home yep sure enough there was poor kitty dead in the road.

now mind you i feel very bad at this point i love cats have two of then so this wasn't intentional but felt bad anyway didn't even bother to look at the van to see if there was damagewell.. took my mom to an app later this morning ,and low and behold there is a huge crack in our lower bumper:sad2:

DH took it to the body shop and it will cost 1,028.00 to fix:scared1: I can't beleive a cat can do that much damage.
so let me ask you this it is a 2009 chrysler town and country would you pay out of pocket or go through the hassel of insurance?

sorry about the long post i can't wait for this day to be over.

That's an awful lot of damage from just a cat.. Are you sure that you or your DH didn't "bump" it somewhere - or maybe someone backed into you in a parking lot or something?

Sad about the kitty, but if you couldn't stop fast enough - you couldn't stop fast enough.. Pretty much the same with the deer up here..

I don't know about the insurance situation.. How much is your deductible?

Sorry it's been such a bad day..

How upsetting :worried:. Sorry about your bad day, the poor cat, and your van :scared:, but unfortuntately accidents do happen that are not our fault. We see so many deer on side of road that people simply can't avoid hitting :guilty:. Thankfully you or son weren't hurt . Lots of these bumpers are covered with plastic type material, altho some are metal or chrome, so with the cost of body work it doesn't take much to add up to $1000 :headache:. In Md. that would probably be considered comprehensive ins., so depending on your deductible as to if it would be worth going through ins.?

I can testify that accidents happen out of no where when you least expect it ~ sadly we've had 2 within 15 mos. both our accidents within 5 miles of home. :sad2:

Just last year some lady stopped for a turtle crossing the road and caused a 4 car pile up :guilty:. DH stopped for her, however the truck behind him didn't, so he got sandwiched in between and our sadly our Jeep was totaled :(. Praise God DH was not hurt seriously.

So we bought another Jeep and guess what  ~ last month we were stopped behind a school bus, a car load of teens didn't stop and rear ended us, damaged to our Jeep was only $2500., but their car was totaled. Thankfully they're not hurt, but I'm in therapy for pinched nerve causing me big problems :worried:. Now our excellent driving record has 2 accidents within 15 mos., altho totally not our fault, it's still on our record. I thank God for insurance and no serious injuries.

We're considering adding a steel grid bar across the back of our Jeep and painting it red! ;)

Honestly, I really think you should have stopped and checked on the cat. If it wasn't dead, it could have been suffering terribly. I know you said you love cats, and it was obviously an accident, but I think the possibly suffering of the animal you hit was more important than worrying about your child being late for school. I'm sure the school would have understood your reason for being late. Cats do like to run out in front of cars, and accidents can happen, but please don't let an animal suffer in the future.

As for the car: I would probably pay for the damages out of pocket. You can shop around for lower quotes, or possibly get a referral from a mechanic who does side work and pay for the parts and his labor charge--which would most likely be less than taking it to a shop.

We did a story on body work, and justing painting and replacing a plastic bumper cover does cost about $1,000.

As for turning it into insurance, depends on your deductable. I have $1,000 deductable so I wouldn't risk a rate increase for $28 payout.

You hit a cat and just kept going? Didn't stop to check on it? It's possible it could have survived ya know. That's so sad.
At the very least you could have called to report it to the humane society or animal control or something. When you drove back by it, did you stop then to check for a collar or ID tag or anything?
