I may have just blown our July Disneyworld trip! I was running bath water in the bathtub this morning and I totally forgot I turned the water on. Low and behold my Dh comes home and goes into the bathroom and you guessed it...WATER ALL OVER THE PLACE!!! Now he says we may not have a vacation because of this. I have called the insurance company and a water restoration company to clear our the water. The carpet will have to be replaced in the bathroom, closet and master bedroom. Depending on how much all this will cost will affect our budget. I have got to slow down!!!

How bad are the carpets, really? Is there some way to use a water-option shop vac to suck up most of the water and then use fans to dry it?

I'd give it a try at least before replacing.

They brought the fans out today to try and dry the carpets. They will be back out Monday to recheck the moisture levels. We have to leave the fans on non-stop until Monday evening.

Oh geez. That's awful! I'd get more fans going, turn up the heat, do everything I could to get those carpets dry. Toss down some towels/shamwows and walk on them to absorb what you can.

It might be that you have to take them up, replace the pad, but can put them back down again.

Doesn't your tub have an overflow drain? I know if ours fills past a certain point it starts to drain slowly.

Good luck! I hope it works out.

Don't beat yourself up over this. We all make mistakes. It won't make it any better if you get worked up about it.

Maggie

I know it will all work out. This happened right after we just rcvd. confirmation we have paid one of biggest debts in full.:woohoo:

This should be completely covered by your home owners insurance, including the water restoration company coming out. They are usually so anti mold that they will do what ever it takes to dry it up and make it safe to live in after water damage. Well that's what happened to me anyway.

How long was everything wet? That's gonna be the biggest factor in whether or not it's salvageable.

Be careful what you tell the insurance company. They may not cover anything if it was done by personal fault....now if a pipe burst that is another story.....

Something very similar happend to my girlfriend....their drywall had to get replaced as well as any cabinets that were sitting in water...close to $10,000 worth of damage. (Her's was in the kitchen which spread to the living and dining rooms)

Hope it all works out for you and that you can still get to goto the world!!!

You have carpet in the bathroom? I would replace the carpet in the bedroom & hall, but change the bathroom to something more water resistant.

I just wanted to say that I am sorry that this happened to you. We all make mistakes. :grouphug: My parents had the pipes burst in their home while they were on an Alaskan cruise and it was quite a mess to clean up. Even with the fans they opted to replace the carpet because my sister has terrible allergies and did not want to take a chance. I wish you the best. :)

We had a water leak, I used a portable rug shampoo'er and I rented a wet/dry vac. Then I had the dehumidifier running, they sell for about $100.

Put on the fans. The problem is if you are away and come home with it moldy, Gee the only time I saw a huge problem on the Show where people are house hunting. A bank owned home had a sewer back up in the basement bathroom and the total cost to clean that up was under a Disney trip.

I think dh was upset and blew it out of proportion. As far as insurance. I could get for the carpets when the Ice dams leaked into the dry wall, and three walls of repair. Things attached.
I know the total damage was $2,700 for three rooms with the drywall, But really I did not rip them out, I painted with Kilz the water marks, and repainted, I did replace carpets as they were due. I bought a silver color when we moved in...no driveway paved, it was red rock so the carpets were a mess no matter what I did to prevent shoes in the house.

I remeber once when I rented leaving the tub on, the kitchen light started leaking water before I knew what was up. I turned to elec up. it was hard wood floors, so I mopped.

Another time, I had the type of furnace you had to put water in. I added water a cold night, went to bed, woke up to a downstairs of water. I did not tighten the knob and water was coming out of the radiators.

They were 11' X 14' so I lifted the edges. after using a wet/dry vac maintance lent me. Stayed at my parents that day as the window were open and fan on to dry things out. It was fine when dry.

Oh no!!!!! This could happen to anyone. I'm so sorry! Keep us posted and I hope the insurance company covers most of it so you can still take your trip.

I work for an insurance company. This loss should be covered all but the deductible. I,ve just attended a couple of water restoration classes to gain credits toward my continuing education. According to the what we've been told the carpet, drywall, cabinets, etc can be dried if the drying process begins within the 1st 12-24 hours. Good Luck and don't beat your self up about this mistake. We are human and all make them.

I am so sorry this happened to you! We had a water pipe crack in our upstairs bathroom and it was slowly leaking through the walls/floors/ceilings in the closets all the way into our basement for about 4 days before we discovered it! It took 8 solid days of those commercial fans running before the salvage company would confirm everything was dry. My only advice would be NOT to rush the drying process and make sure you follow any suggestions for replacing materials. Potential mold problems are not something to fool around with just to save a buck.

Good luck to you. :flower3:

So sorry this happened to you. But your homeowner's insurance should take care of it.

A few years ago we had a plumbing leak in our kitchen. A connection under the sink broke. We were home but I was in the shower. The water ran, full blast for under 10 min. By the time we turned it off, our Family Room was mostly flooded and it was running into our Dining Room and even through the wall to the outside. We cleaned up most of the water before the restoration company even arrived. Took our furniture outside. We had fans and humidifiers running for 3 days straight. We were put up in a local Ayers Suites (very nice) for 2 nights due to the noise and the fact that we couldn't get into our kitchen. Our laminate floor was ruined and we couldn't match it in the rest of the downstairs. Our insurance paid us enough to replace all the laminate with tile (which we installed), carpet in the Living and Dining Rooms (we bought remnants for this) as well as using some of the money for new granite counters and paying for our next trip to WDW! And we still had a little money left over. This was due to the fact that they paid us as if a contractor would be hired to do the work and since we are handy (and have done a lot of our own home improvement) we did the labor ourselves.

Hopefully, your insurance will be as easy to work with as our was. Our company didn't even care why we had the leak, they recommended that we have a lic. plumber look at it (my bro-in-law is a plumber).

It may turn out to be a blessing.

We were honest with our insurance company and they covered it, less the deductible. Same with a neighbor.

 I did this on Wednesday in my brand new kitchen. the kids were distracting me and I totally forgot. :headache: Some of our trim has to be replaced now. DH wasn't thrilled, but said it could happen to anybody. Maybe your DH will calm down and realize it was just a mistake. (If I had done it on purpose, I would have caused the flood in the kids bathroom! :rotfl: )

Sarah

so sorry this happened to you. I flooded our kids bath and most of the hall in our first house. I started running the tub for DD and got sidetracked outside talking to a neighbor. When we came in to put DD in the bath we had to wade down the hall. Not good. We were able to clean it all up with a wet vac and dry with every fan we could find.

After dealing with the aftermath of a flood in our home, I will always advise professional clean up. They not only have all the equipment needed to dry it up, but also to continually monitor the moisture level. Especially when you have insurance.

That's how they know when to remove drywall and flooring. I believe I was told that now you have to disclose previous water damage to buyers when you sell your home, because mold is such a big deal.
