OMG 2 pit bull just terrorized my development. Updated 7/24

I'm in tears 20 mins ago my neighbor across the cul de saccs yorkie got chewed up by 2 pit bulls. I'm pulling into my driving way and the poor yorkie is screaming while my neighbor is running after her. she was walking her dog and 2 pitbulls not on a lease attacked it.

Well now there are about 10 neighbors and we have shovels, bats any thing we can think of to beat these dogs off and finally they run down the street (with about 10 of us screaming and chasing it) and attack another little dog in some one's yard.

My 15 yo son (thank the Lord) had the presence of mind to call the cops) so the cops finally come but these dogs are still running around.


I know I'm totally irrational here and will come down after a few minutes (and a couple of drinks) so please forgive me, but guys I really hate pitbulls. Now my kids are scared to even think about walking my dog hobbes (he's a mutt german shepard/retrevier mix)

I know any dog can be vicious but it always seem to be pit bulls.

Hopefully the lady with the Yorkie will file a police report and the police will talk to the owners of the pit bull before its too late!!

i feel really bad for your neighbor's dogs. and i'm glad everyone had the presence of mind to act the way they did. i hope no more dogs get loose in your neighborhood.

when i was younger i remember the dogs that got loose were rottweilers, and my mom wouldn't let me go outside. i didn't really understand why until i was older.

I am so sorry you had to witness that.

I don't know what to think about pit bulls. My dog has a little pit bull in him (his mom was half pit bull, half lab and his dad was full lab), and he's the sweetest dog on the planet. I've only seen three dogs go/act completely crazy, though, and they were all pit bulls.

My friend has two pitbulls and they raised them from puppies. They treat them better than they ever treated thier child. I've seen these dogs attack a child before. I don't know why or how they got that way, but I know it wasn't from people, unless it was passed down from their parents.

Did the police speak with the owner of the pit bulls? This is scary. I hope they do something about this immediately before something tragic happens. Recently we had an incident here in Michigan where a pit bull killed a newborn baby. To make matters worse, the pit bull was the families dog .

I'm sorry but you are wrong, fighting (dogs) is a trait that has been bred into pitbulls, genetics made them do that not a person. That breed is most definitely bred with that kind of meanness and it doesn't matter whether their owners raise them to be fighters or not, the instinct is in them to fight with other dogs. An owner, even a loving one who trains their pit to be a sweetheart can never train away that instinct.

OP, I'm so sorry for your neighbor and that dog. Hopefully those dogs will be taken care of.

my hands are literally shaking. Yorkie is at the vet right now, my neighbor and her mom (who was over) took them right away. Police left cards with every one so we'll definitely get the message. One officer said the dogs had collars with id tags so hopefully they'll find the owners. I've been here 14 years and this is the first time I've seen them.

I am sooooooooooooooo sorry about the terrier and about your kids being scared now. I love animals but those pitbulls are mostly viscious animals (yes I know they CAN be nice if shown love), it is just in them and can be brought out in a snap of the finger, even if loved their whole lives. I tend to think of them like tigers, they can be trained and trained well, but can attack on a moments notice just like Roy was attacked. He trusted them too much.

SO sorry you had to be part of all that. I am guessing the little dog probably didn't survive. I can't imagine how scarey that all was to witness.

It does seem that pits are prone to this behavior. I tend to blame the owners! Any animal could do this but people seem to let their Pits run loose more then others! I have interacted with several wonderful Pits but they all have wonderful owners. We were extremely lucky to not have a similar attack on my street when former neighbors had a Pit that constantly got out. They were NOT good pet owners! Our current issue is a a Husky that lives across the street. The owners now have a fence and a tie out for him. If he gets loose nothing good will come of it.
(I am not a Pit owner nor will I ever be one. I do not feel qualified to raise a bully breed. My inexperiance would make me a bad owner and my pet a bad pet. I just wish more people would realize their limitations!)
In fact I was just in a discussion today about owners knowing their limits and knowing their pets. For instance I know my Aussie becomes extremely agitated if people run at each other. That means as we work with her to correct this behavior I must be responsible enough to monitor any situation that happens around her.
I hope they find the owners and they have to pay bigtime!!!

Well I wouldn't point the finger at one individual but more to man as a whole is responsible for this breed and any other domesticated animal there is in existance today
I guess mabe you should ask the poster I was directing my response to if she meant that man as a whole made the entire breed mean, or if she meant one particular person made those 2 dogs mean. I assumed the latter hence my response. It is entirely possible that the 2 pits in the OP were trained to attack other dogs by their owner but I was just making a point that its just as possible that they were not due to the nature of the breeding of this animal, but I'm sure you knew that

I can imagine how upsetting it must have been to witness a small dog being attacked by two powerful, bigger dogs. Maybe the dogs and its owners are new to the neighborhood. Maybe they're watching them for someone else.

I don't understand why anyone would want to take on the responsibility of owning this breed. It's an unpredictable and powerful breed.

The neighbors on my right have a pitbull. I don't know these neighbors because they totally keep to themselves. Their house faces the other street; their backyard faces one side of my house. After many problems with their pitbull, they finally had a wooden fence installed around their backyard. Before that, the dog attacked 3 neighborhood dogs, which were on leashes when the attacks occurred. The dog liked to corner people in their cars. It was really creepy. The dog would come running out of their unfenced yard and would follow the cars. I remember pulling into my driveway and the dog would stand next to my door waiting for me to get out. There were many calls to Animal Control (very responsive in our city) by various neighbors and some to the cops, who had zero success in getting through to the owners. Every time AC would respond to complaints, the dog couldn't be found by the time they arrived. The owners of the pit promised to pay for the vet bills of one of the dogs that it attacked. They never did and the owner of said dog had to hire an attorney to handle the case. After that, the pit's owners installed the wooden fence.

Whom would be anyone who wants a dog aggressive dog. Like people that are into dog fighting.


Temperment comes from two things, hereditary and environmental. Hereditary comes from the genetics, environmental comes from how the dog was raised.

Sorry but I 100% disagree. Yes, people can mistreat dogs and make them mean but pitbulls are BORN mean and nothing you can say will change my mind. It is in their genes and combined with the tremendous psi of their jaws they are killing machines.

Hugs to the op, since the police were called hopefully the dogs will be confiscated and dealt with properly.

What really gets me is when some person makes comments about something they know NOTHING about. When my daughter was 5 years old, our Chow, much BELOVED and babied Chow attacked her.

WE DID NOT MAKE THE CHOW MEAN. She just snapped like a rubber band and attacked our baby that she had been raised with. A bullet to the head cured that.

Man meaning mankind not a single person. I responded to your post because I questioned your words not someone else's. It was a valid question and your reply was snarky, but I'm sure you knew that.

I don't feel comfortable debating this on this particular thread so I won't.
