Olympus Evolt Series

I think you would get some amazing pics with the 25mm. That would be my choice. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the unput! I think I will go with the 25mm. Can't wait!! :thumbsup2

Wow...I had to go back a few pages to find this :scared1:

I was walking through the crowds Sunday during the Philadelphia 3 day breast cancer walk and met a guy shooting with the E3. He had a lens that had a DOF scale on it so I inquired about it. It was the 12 - 60 f/2.8. After chatting a bit he handed me his card....he is a tech guy for Olympus Imaging out of Center Valley, PA (their US headquarters). He said that Olympus would be coming out with some really great stuff within the next 18 months but wouldn't give me any details. :confused3

Not sure if he was just blowing smoke but could be interesting if true.

I'm hoping so. :thumbsup2 Nice work, Joe, lol.

I haven't been shooting too much. Life's busy right now with extensive renovations we're doing and we had a couple of people sick in the family. But I did get out for a short shoot Saturday and it was fun.

I will be very interested to see what Olympus has up its sleeve.

I've been taking some pictures of my daughter's high school band this year to play around and learn more about my camera. Here's the clarinet section from the Gallatin High School Band (TN) at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational on Oct. 10 in Nashville.

Thanks Joe!! I have the Olympus Evolt E-510. I appreciate your suggestion of a flash to fill the dark areas under the hats.

:thumbsup2 I'm currently using the same camera

So is anyone else disappointed that the big Oly announcement was another M4/3 camera?

I was really hoping for an E3 replacement. Seems my options now are:

1) just keep the E510 and wait the 1 - 2 years for the E3 replacement

2) go with the E30

I just hope Oly doesn't abandon the 4/3 format and hitch their wagon solely to the M4/3 format

Decisions decisions :confused3

What is it that you're looking for, Joe?

Better DR

upgraded AE bracketing......looking to try my hand at HDR photography

Ability to handle multiple strobes

Multiple exposure mode ( not a dealbreaker but could be useful for abstract photography which I really enjoy)

All of which the E30 has but it doesn't have a weatherproofed body which the E3 does.

Help!

I'm a "basic camera user" who happens to have the E510. I used it last Sept/Oct (2008) when we were at WDW. I was happy with a lot of the shots I got, but unhappy with some, too.

Here's a scenario I struggle with.... using the camera on auto, it's somewhat overcast during the day, the flash does not go off... the pictures are dark. If I put the basic flash on, then the pictures are too bright.

What am I doing wrong? I know that you guys probably know a lot of tricks, but I'm a girl who needs the "easy answer". Is that bad to admit? DH bought me this camera for Christmas two years ago and I *want* to take better pictures with it. I wish I knew someone locally who could spend an hour with me and teach me a few tricks.

Thanks in advance!

In a situation like that you can use flash compensation to lower the flash output. You can get to this by pressing the flash button and the +/- button. Then you use the mode dial to dial down the flash to - 1 , -2 etc.
It's all a bit of trial and error but this should work with the camera in auto mode.

Definately nothing wrong with easy answers. Also, you may want to get a copy of Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure" . It is an easy read wihout getting very technical.

Wow, I have had this camera for almost 2 years and didn't realize that pressing the "up" button brought me to that WB area with different variations on light. I'm going to do some playing around with it tomorrow (when I can go outside and try to replicate some of the problems I have taking outside pictures). You'd think the outside pics would be easiest? LOL.

Thank you so much. I really should know more about exposure. I've learned a few things and have gotten better in some areas, but obviously not all.

I also found the +/- dial and will play with that, too. I really need to read the manual. ;)

Hi Loopner. I've found that in order to get the kind of pictures you want you really have to work at it. (As would be the case with any camera.) The more you put into it, the more you get out of it. I never had great luck with the manual. I did buy one of the Magic Lantern (?) DVDs on Amazon made just for the E510. It's a little "slow", but it pretty much goes over everything you know to operate the camera successfully. I try to watch it every now and then as I learn something new every time I do. Maybe give it a try? And just get out and practice! Get of Auto if you can help it, try Aperture Priority. Have you participated in any of the Monthly Assignments?

Hmm... that DVD sounds like something I need! Even if I learn a little more each week, I would be better off, right?

I feel like I've played with the camera in certain scenarios, but it was the outside stuff that I took for granted. I just assumed there'd be sunlight and all would be well. Ha! I was so wrong.

I've never participated in the Monthly Assignments. I'll be hanging out here a lot more often and will try to see if there's something I can or learn just by being here. :thumbsup2

I'm also going to practice! It's a cloudy day today and I'm going to go play with some different settings.

Cloudy is actually a great time to shoot. Things don't get "washed out" as they sometimes do in sunlight. Try using Aperture Priority, and set your WB to cloudy. See what transpires.
