Olympus Evolt Series

Hey all!

Forgive me if this has already been asked, but I just bought the E450 and can't wait to get it! The first lense I plan to purchase for it is a nifty fifty. Does anyone know where I can purchase one and a relatively affordable price? I've seen them for other brands around $100 or so, but have only seen them for Olympus in the $400 range. Any suggestions?

You will need to buy an older Olympus OM 50mm lens. They are available in f/1.8 or f/1.4. The f/1.4 has a premium price. Here's the catch you will need an adapter to use this lens. It can be purchased on Ebay for around $25 after shipping. You have to stop down the aperture and it's manual focus. I would recommend using Live View to help focusing. To see if this route is for you put the camera in MF mode and focus it by hand. Too tough for my eyes! Good Luck.

Congratulations on your purchase and welcome, Mr,MouseFan. Hopefully we'll be seeing some of your pictures!

I'd like to get a 50mm lens, too. I'm keeping my eye out for a used one. I bought a nearly new 18-180 for half the cost of new (and it's barely come off my camera since).

Thanks! I look forward to sharing some pics soon! If you don't mind my asking, where do you normally purchase your lenses?

I've wondered the same thing myself. I bought the 18-180 off Craigslist. I've seen others on Craigslist from time to time, but sometimes it doesn't make sense to buy that way if the price difference isn't significant from that of a retailer (which seems to be the case pretty often). I also like Amazon just because I've had good luck shopping with them. Oh, and I bought my pancake from Dell when I got their sale price, plus AAA discount, plus free shipping. I also found their customer service fantastic when I had a problem. (Piece came off side of lens; they sent me a new one before I shipped back the old one free of charge. Olympus wanted me to send this "brand new lens" in for repair.) I'm not really familiar with many of the other places to buy lenses but I'd like to know more from anyone who is. I go back and forth with which lenses I'd like to buy. You might want to use your camera for a while to see what suits you best. It could be different than what you think right now. But the 50mm is classic so you probably can't go wrong there. What made you choose the 450?

Welcome to the DIS Olympus family Mr. Mouse Fan!!!

I've found that the best places to get any Oly equipment is online at some of the reputable camera sites, Adorama, B&H, BuyDig, Amazon, etc. Another source is Ebay.

Unfortunately, I've found that Best Buy type stores don't carry much in the way of Oly equipment.

To be honest, I was all set to purchase the Pentax K2000. I'd even bought memory cards for it and everything. Then I happened upon QVC and their today's special value was the 450 with two lenses, the memory card, and a bag. So, I did some research on the 420 (since the 450 hasn't been released yet) and for the price they were asking, I couldn't pass up the deal. I do have some reservations about not having image stabilization, as well as the four thirds system, and I know that one should always try the camera out and see how if feels in your hands, but how do you hold a camera that's not out yet? LOL

So, I took a chance on this package and so far the reviews have been pretty good. Plus, QVC has that 30 money back guarantee, so if I don't like it, I can always send it back.

Thanks for the welcome and thanks for clueing me in on those sites! I was looking at Best Buy and was unimpressed, to say the least, about the selection!

Here's a website to look for used lenses. www.fourthirdsphoto.com It's a website that's devoted to 4/3rds cameras.

There are some people selling 50mm at this moment.

There's also alot of valuable info from some very knowledgeable people.

I meant to go back and edit some of those sites into my pp. Thanks.

BTW, where've you been, stranger?

I just got back from the ABD Spirit of America trip!! Fantastic trip :thumbsup2

Now I've got about 700 RAW files to process :rotfl:

I know the feeling. But I've got thousands. :scared: I've been shooting tons of stuff and am kind of backed up at the moment. My 2yo computer is actually scaring me, it's telling me every time I download my RAW files that I'm almost out of space. DH is good about not caring what equipment I buy, etc, but this is driving him NUTS!!   :rotfl2: We bought a second external HD for storage. I just have to sit down and go through all my files. Most of them are "kind of done" but I have to "finish" them off once and for all. I estimate it'll take me at least 40 hrs. Who's got all that time, especially when the weather's finally so nice! :rolleyes1

I hear ya. You will never guess what I'm looking at right now. Stay tuned. popcorn::

I just got the E-450 and used it for the first time. I am a total newbie to the dslr world. It has a fireworks setting, does anyone know what I need to do to use it. I think it is an auto setting. I have read the manual and cannot figure it out. I took some pictures last night on the auto setting an I really like how they came out. They were of my son and his friends before the eigth grade dance. I will probably start off by using mostly the auto settings. If someone could post the exact steps that I need to do that would be great.

I want to figure out how to use that fireworks setting before my next disney trip! I was very pleased with how fast the camera is. I had an older canon G3 that was pretty slow and pretty outdated as well! It did take some great pictures back in its' time.

Thanks

Vickey
