Glad you liked the pancake, Pug. Looks good, show us more as you get them. My friend had mine in Italy two weeks ago, but I haven't seen the pics yet. She said she felt there was a learning curve with it, but she's still trying to figure out the basics of her 520. Will let you know.

Nice, Kim!

This thread needed a little bump!
That way when DH gets home from work he can post about his newest acquisition.
The one he thought he could hide from me, but I found out anyway. :rolleyes1

Hi:) My sweet DH just got me an Olympus E-410. This is my first upgrade from a point and shoot. He got the bundle pack with two lenses. So this camera is alittle bit out of my league!!! Any suggestions on where to find some easy answers to help get it set up. I think I even have the auto function messed up. I would love to get some tips we live in such a small town and there are no classes or anything around for me to take. TIA for anyhelp.

Welcome, jajomo. Yesterday I bumped up a thread I started last year called The Learning Curve so it should still be on page 1 of the PB. It might help a little. I have an E510 but it's a general dSLR thread. I think there are some book recommendations in there somewhere. Just keep using your camera, it takes a while to get good at it. Everyone here is good with questions if you have them. Congrats on your purchase. :thumbsup2

obm, what'd you get (besides a butt whoopin)? :lmao:

Welcome!!!

You can start here. Many of us Oly users check out this site regularly to see what is going on in the Olympus camp.

Hope it helps.

Well if I had to ask for permission, I would have been told "no", but with one more word in front of "no". We've read that Ritz/Wolf Camera has filed for bankruptcy and are closing some stores. Well, there is a Clearance Center near me and I had to stop in and check out the prices. They originally had lots of older cameras (2 to 3 years old) Nikons, Canons, Pentax, and Olympus.

Last week, I stopped by there and there was a Olympus E510 sitting there, all alone with those other brands. It really needed a good FAMILY to come and live with. I had my E1 in the car and took that battery in to test the camera. I was wanting to make sure it was not a demo or a refurb model. The camera only had 157 shutter releases. Well, I bought it without asking. I walked out of there spending $119.00. Not a typo, after tax $119 and change. It was worth taking the butt whoopin.:woohoo::woohoo:

HA! Great deal, bro! :rotfl2: I would have bought it, too, absolutely! (Sorry, jsg. :duck: )

You are going to be quite the expert around here now, having a 410, E1 and now a 510. :thumbsup2 It'll be interesting to hear what you think about the differences between them. Be sure to give us a rundown when you can. Are you still going to keep the Sony?

Trying to convince the wife that our son would like to use the 410. If son doesn't want to use it, it will probably go on Craigslist along with the Sony Alpha and those lenses.

I will say that store had some amazing prices.

I've noticed so far that I like having the IS function. There's also alot more buttons on the 510. The 410 has some of these same features, you just have to go into the menus to find them.

Waiting for some good weather to take the camera out for a little fun.

I guess that I should probably wait on the Sigma 30mm for now!:confused3

Thanks for the advice everyone :) I have had about 24 hours and have taken 100 shots...a lot go in the trash..but wow there are some keepers!!! It just amazes me........the difference from my poor little kodak ...lol. Once again thanks and I'll keep on clicking and hoping I get better.

Hi!:wave2: You look like you're off to a great start. I bought the E520 with the two lenses in October and my collection has steadily grown. I just got the FL-36R flash on Friday.

Has anyone done the firmware update on the 70-300? I haven't yet, but last night I was using it to try and take a pic of DD from across the room. It did not want to lock focus, so I kept turning on lights and finally got a few pics. I've read of some people updating their lenses and their battery runs out of power during the update and then their lenses don't work anymore. How long do the updates normally take?

Pugrpooh-

I haven't done any firmware updates on any of my Olympus cameras or lenses. I have read too many horror stories with updates. I'm too much of a chicken!!!

The 70-300 is a tricky lens when using indoors especially with low light. Try changing the metering mode or picking out a higher contrasting spot thats the same distance of you subject. I tend to shoot in the P mode when indoors and with a lot of different lighting conditions. I've found better success just by changing the metering, it seems to lock focus easier. It's alot of trial and error. You can also try to focus at a wider angle and then zoom in closer, somtimes in won't hunt for you subject as much. Good Luck!

I know what you mean, but remember that all of us have "been there" too! ;)

It is nice to see that you can finally capture some action shots without the blur, right?

And actually, yours are quite good. I've been shooting literally thousands of baseball pictures as my son has two double headers per weekend and town games during the week. It's tough shooting through fences but sometimes they come out so that you can barely even see the fence. Yesterday was once such day for me. What I've been doing is making sure I focus on the player behind the fence and lock focus, by just holding the shutter release halfway, then clicking once I frame the shot the way I want it. I also fool around a bit with the metering modes as it seems to help with speed when you get the right one (which varies depending on conditions). I think my group yesterday was my best yet, finally. Conditions were overcast which made it easier in pp.

I haven't done any firmware updates yet, either. I figured I'd ask you guys how when I was ready. I see we all have our work cut out for us. :lmao:

Thanks all!! Since today is mothers day I guess I'll go torment the grandma's ....they are so going to kill my hubby for buying me this!! lol Thanks again for the welcome!!
