Here's a shocker.

If I were to do it all over.... I would go for the Canon 10D.

I think Canon lenses are a little better than Nikon. I also think the 10D, which goes for the same price of the D100 has a better CCD and takes beter pictures.

I went with Nikon because I had 2 lenses already.

I own the older model of that camera. The c700 ultra zoom.

I love that 10x optical zoom. Its just awesome to be able to take close shots of things that are a bit distant.

I bought it when after it had been discontinued, and got it for $279.

Yeah well with the money already in the lenses....

It will be interesting to see if the new digital slr format takes off, 4/3 or what ever it is called.

I have a question for you, your highness and esteemed knower of things photo-digital:

Why do all these cameras use a digital viewfinder? Would an optical viewfinder not give a true indicator of what you're shooting?

I think the digital viewfinder is the single thing I most detest on my C-700. (Okay, the only thing I detest.) It's awkward, slow, and useless in low light conditions.

The electronic viewfinders show almost 100% of the image; that's why they're needed on cameras with longer zooms. The optical viewfinders usually show between 75-85% of the image. I agree the EVF on the C-700 can be a pain at times, but I've gotten used to it. I'm hoping the EVFs will be improved in future cameras.

Thanks, Shadeaux. That makes sense. I can see how image size/composition can be displayed more accurately with the EVF.

Maybe I just wish it were more sensitive. I wind up frequently using the battery-chomping display instead of the viewfinder.

I think I would like to have a true optical viewfinder (for the clear view, to have no lag time, and give better results in low light), and the display when I want to see the composition/image at true size.

Since I almost always do a bit of post-production cropping, enhancing and such on the computer, perfect composition with the camera isn't all that important to me.

(As if I could make that work at all! I often can't tell the mediocre shots from the great ones until I get them on the computer and start playing with them. I don't think I really have an eye for great photos. That's why I think digital is so much fun. I can take tons of photos, and a few of them are bound to come out great just by accident. )

You have to like a question that startes like that!

I think it would be real hard to line up an optical view finder and the lens with that kind of zoom power.

The lag isn't a function of the view finder it is the focus & exposure process.

Just an FYI:

The C740 is now $399.00 on www.buydig.com and just a few days ago it was $429.00!! They are also offering FREE ground shipping for this camera! DH and I will be ordering this camera within the next day or so

I went to dpreview.com and someone said to go to
www.everyprice.com and compare prices. Some places show the camera to be as low as $344!
BTW, what is the difference between the C740 and C750? I thought the man at the photo shop where I went said the size was the only real difference?

I'm sure there are more differences between the C740 & C750, but here are a few.

C750 has more pixels at 4.0 megapixels.

C750 has sound -- C740 doesn't.

Both have 10x optical zoom, but C740 has only 3x digital zoom (total 30x zoom) & the C750 has 4x digital zoom (total 40x zoom).

C750 has metal case. C740 has plastic case.

I believe the cameras are the same size.

C750 has hot shoe -- if your into that sorta thing.

I know there's more....but off the top of my head...this is all I can remember.
