My six year old wants to have an Olympic themed birthday party. We are having the party at a local gym here so I don't have to really come up with activities. What I need are ideas for favors, cake and what she could wear. Plus, invitations.

I thought for favors about getting little gold medals that say 1st place. I found a place that has them as stock and will engrave "Thanks for coming to Katie's Party!" on the back for free. I thought the medal on a ribbon and a small American Flag for favors, but I can't think of any other ideas. Also not sure if it isn't a silly idea for five and six year olds?

The invitation is harder. I can't reproduce those circles. I am not that good with scissors. I thought of wrapping the invite around the bottom of the small American Flag (instead of using it for a favor) but I am too worried about the flags getting messed up in transport. Any creative thoughts or ideas? Someone suggested rolling it up like the torch and using red, yellow and orange tissue paper but I can’t figure out how to affix that without messing up the invite!

Lastly, cake. Obviously I could call up Duff at Ace of Cakes in Baltimore and I bet he'd make me a perfect cake with the Olympic circles. However, that would probably triple my party budget on its own so not the greatest idea. :) I've never seen an Olympic cake but I have seen a Gymnastics cake. Maybe that would pass? :)

Any other creative ideas? I’d love to hear’em!

What about just doing where it looks like the Olympic flag - aka a white rectangle with the 5 rings in the middle? Its definitely not as creative as your other options, but it would transport easily.

The mascots for the Olympics are really cute this year. They may be something neat to include in the decorations or invites.

I like the idea of the medal and the flag. I don't even think that you would need to get the medal engraved.

My girls are attending an Olympic-themed birthday party next weekend. I think they will have a great time, as the last birthday party they went to there was Survivor-themed, and the kids said it was a blast.

The invitations were just written on 8 1/2 x 11 sheets, but they had the Olympic Rings on them, and said something like "Join us for the Olympic Games in Honor of X's Birthday"

Then it gave the phone number and deadline to "register" for the games. I think the possibilites for games and prizes are endless.

Have fun and good luck with your party.

Good favors for the kids would be Olympic pins and small 4"x6" Olympic flags. The official USOC store online should be able to give you some ideas: http://www.usolympicshop.com/home/default.cfm?SID=8723

Maybe create a name tag for each child that incorporates the name and year of an Olympic host city, a famous athlete, or an Olympic sport.

Instead of small candles on the cake, why not use a large candle to simulate the Olympic flame? You can decorate the base of it with your child's age or birth year.

One of my new magazines had party ideas............either Family Fun, Parents or Parenting................
