The Svetlana Khorkina vault height error in 2000 was unforgiveable.

Now this...

Judging Error Gave Hamm Gold

By EDDIE PELLS, AP Sports Writer

ATHENS, Greece - Paul Hamm (news - web sites)'s gold medal just lost its luster. A scoring mistake at the all-around gymnastics final cost South Korea (news - web sites)'s Yang Tae-young the gold that ended up going to Hamm, the International Gymnastics Federation ruled Saturday. The South Korean got the bronze instead.

Three judges were suspended, but the results will not be changed, the federation said. The South Korean Olympic team will ask the Court of Arbitration for Sports to determine if Yang deserves a gold medal.

"We want obvious mistakes to be corrected," said Jae Soon-yoo, an official with the South Korean delegation.

The error Wednesday cost Yang a tenth of a point on his parallel bars score that made the difference between third and first.

How should this be rectified?

Like they did the ice skaters at the last winter Olympics. Don't take the gold form the guy who got it, but give another one to the guy who actually did win.

Just watched an interview with Tim Dagget on NBC and he said that the Koreans should've filed the protest at the meet, that's the protocal they're supposed to follow. He said if you look at the meet under a microscope you'll probably find small mistakes, thats why the protocals in place, the US filed 2 starting score protests during that night. It's the coaches responsibility to follow the standard protocal and file protests on start values during the meet, not after, he said the results should and will stand.

It's obviously a terrible situation, and I can certainly understand why the Korean athlete would want to appeal. I believe I heard that one of the judges suspended was an American, so that doesn't help the situation, really. The scores were so close that night...it doesn't make sense that no one caught this error...but maybe I'm being naive.

I think it would be bad form to deny him the Gold, so, yes, maybe two golds would be appropriate.

I just saw the Tim Daggett interview, too.

The South Korean response(from that Yahoo article):

The South Koreans, however, said they did question the scoring as soon as the routine was over and were told by the judges to file a protest letter after the meet, Jae said.

It's tough...I'm leaning towards the asterisk and two golds, as well.

An article I read compared it to a NFL play that wasn't challenged immediately, as protocol required. It happens sometimes. I hate it when that happens to MY team!

I also hate it when someone doesn't follow the rules then wants to complain when things don't go as they would like.

I haven't heard that one of the coaches asked a judge but wasn't allowed to challenge it.
