All this talk about the price of points going up had me curious about what I actually paid for my original purchase in March of '92. I seemed to remember it was in the high 40's. Well, I hauled out all the papers, did the math and it seems I paid $51/pt back then. Was the 40-something price for Fla. residents only or am I imagining it. Does anybody remember the original offering price for out-of-state buyers? I knew I was getting into something good but I never imagined it would increase nearly 50% in less than 10 years! (Now, this can offset the small fortune I lost on Red Hat!!)

We had this a while back, here is a link to the thread.

Here is a summary from that post. Thanks go to PamOKW for putting this together.

Pre-Construction - $48(230 pt. minimum)
Jan. '92 -$50
Feb. '91 - $51
July '92 - $54.50
May '93 - $56 (190 pt. minimum)
July '93 - $57.50
Jan. '94 - $57.50 (190 pt. minimum)
March '95 - $62
Fall '95 - $62.75
May '96 - $62.75
May '97 - $62.75 (150 pt. minimum)
May '98 - $62.75
Jan. '99 - $65
Oct. '99 - $65 (notice of OKW selling out)
June 2000 - $67
Jan. 2001 - $72.00

Seeing all the replies (including the thread)I am happy I decided to purchase a resale 300pts at OKW for $57 only 6 months ago! That's probably my best investment so far;but i would not part with it even at $72.

Just ran some numbers, using the dollar per point amounts posted above (I think BillPA meant "Feb. '92" was $51, not 1991. Thanks to him and PamOKW for compiling the information.)

The average increase per year, from Feb. 1992 ($51) through the expected increase in June 2001 ($75) is 4.2% per year. Inflation has averaged a little over 2.5% per year over the same time period.

However, over these 9 years there were 3 different trends. For the first 3 years, prices increased at about 6.5% per year, until Disney was charging $62 in March 1995. Then, the rates only went up about 1%/year on average for the next 4 years, so in October 1999 Disney was charging $65.

From Oct. 1999 until the increase in June 2001, the price has been going up by about 8.8% per year.

Lets hope we're heading towards another period of 1% increases!!!

It wasn't until recently that I realized that the resale that we purchased in 1999 was a LOT less per point ($56) than the original purchase that we made in 1999 ($62.75) even factoring in the closing costs that we had to pay on the resale. Thank goodness for resales.

Thanks so much everyone for all your input. Bill, that chart you provided was especially informative. (being fairly new to this board, I hadn't seen this info before) Very interesting to see the gradual increase and the great deals some people are getting with resales.

Since I like to play with numbers for fun (why else would I do this?) I put together a chart showing some interesting statistics on the Disney Points over the years.

First, however a few very important items:

1. Look at the numbers as ballpark only. They are only accurate to the point that the base data is accurate.

2. I used BillPA's base numbers. If there are any inaccuracies there they would affect the chart.

3. I used 2.5% as an inflation factor. I do not readily have the actual inflation numbers from 1991 to 2001. Any differences of course between the real numbers and 2.5% would affect the chart.

4. A word about inflation. As prices go up every year, so generally do salaries. However, your salary can also go up due to promotions. This would be above inflation and would tend to increase your standard of living. In comparing to inflation adjusted dollars think of it this way. Let's assume 10 years ago, a high school student working in a fast food restaurant would work 1.85 hours to have enough money, after taxes, to go to the local movie theater. Now in 2001 another high school student, doing the same job, has to work 1.95 hours to go to the same movie theater. Then adjusted for inflation that student is earning less than his 10 year counterpart. However if it only took him 1.75 hours, then he would be earning more than his 10 year counterpart. These differences can be converted backwards into dollars to give us a 'feel' for the work required to purchase certain commodities, such as Disney DVC points.

Now the chart.

Dates and Prices/Point come from BillPA's post.

Dollar Increase is just that.

The Absolute Increase is the percentage increase from the previous price. Example when it went from $51 to $54.50 that was a 6.9% increase.

The Actual Increase is the total increase from the original price. Example, the $54.50 price is an increase of 13.5% above the original $48 price.

The Real Increase, is the same as the absolute increase adjusted for inflation. If Disney had raised prices exactly with inflation, the Real Increase would be 0% in every row. For example, at $54.50/point, our 'student' example would have to work 2.7% more hours to have the same purchasing power our 10-year ago student had to work. Thus if our 10-year student worked 100 hours to buy 1-point, the July'92 student would have to work 102.7 hours to buy 1-point, and today's student (Apr 2001) would have to work 122.5 hours to buy 1-point.

A real increase is equivalent to a state raising a sales tax. It's a bigger piece of the pie.

The Apr 2001 equivalent shows what someone would have had to pay when they bought to be paying the same equivalent amount as someone paying today.

The Equiv June 1991 dollars shows what the price would be at the time you purchased had the Disney increases equaled inflation and not exceeded it.

This is information only. If anyone has any questions on what the forumlas used were, or any other questions, please post back.

WE paid $62.75 for our original points and $65 for our add on.

I just noticed that in all of the research that has been done about point costs, the date for the price increase to $62.75 is listed as Fall '95. I know for a fact that our purchase which was made in July was at the $62.75/point price. I don't know if this makes much of a difference, but I can check our paperwork to get an exact date.

We made our original buy in july 94 and paid $60.50 a point. Made an add on in August 95 and paid $62.75 a point. Our final buy was Jan 99 and it was $67 a point. Never bought a resale always through DVC.

I can confirm familyfun86's purchase price of $60.50/pt in July 94. We took the tour in mid-August 1994 and that was the price with a 210 point minimum.
