We have both a Kindle 2 and a Kindle 3 (and Nook for that matter - so call us crazy
).
I've read on both the K2 and K3. I do believe the contrast is a little better on the K3, and the slightly smaller form factor (still the same screen size) and revamped keyboard/controller is slightly nicer. I'm not wild about the smaller page turn keys on the K3, but they just take some getting used to.
Regardless of the version of the Kindle 2 on sale, I'd say it's a good deal. Unless you need the wifi that the Kindle 3 offers, I would not hesitate to pull the trigger and get a Kindle 2.
