I know in my town you can't just throw it away with the regular trash, you have to take it to the recycling place. You might want to check with how your town requires you to dispose of it.
While the program varies by state, check out what Best Buy offers, in regards to TV's. In Wisconsin- I can recycle a TV up to 32" for a fee of $9.99. I would then get a $10 gift certificate to use at Best Buy. In my opinion - this is a great Win/Win. Best Buy then appropriately recycles the TV's.

Gee, you have the "magic curb" too? We use that a lot. What I think is so nice is that several times we've had people come up to our door to double-check that it's OK for them to just take it.
We put it at the curb and the truck comes and hauls it away with the rest of the trash. Only thing we have to call for a special pickup for is fridges and large appliances so they send the big truck to take it to the dumps.
