Old Town/Murder

after reading this thread I changed my bookings for the travelodge in kissimmee that I had through orangevacations.com to best western movieland with dreams unlimited. I have to pay a 50 cancellation fee with orangevacations, which kind of stinks seeing how I am not even going down there til May. But I feel a little better and we are way closer to Universal which is where we are going this year.

People get murdered in the most upscale cities too! We stayed at Tropical Palms Fun Resort for 2 nights in February (which is right beside Old Town) and did not feel unsafe or have any reason to feel unsafe. We went to the Publix grocery store down the street and the SuperTarget a little further down and did not feel unsafe. We ate in several restaurants on the strip and had no unsafe thoughts or feelings whatsoever. I live in a small "safe" city and, yes, there have even been murders here. Murders and crime are not picky about where they happen, but yes they will happen more often in busy tourist areas, but as other posters have said, use common sense and the chances are pretty slim of it happening to you.

I do not find posts saying that people "felt safe" reassuring. How you feel has no bearing in your safety.

I grew up in a suburb, I spent a lot of time in a city. Holly, on the other hand, grew up on a dirt road in the country. There have been several situations where Holly might "feel safe", but I might feel otherwise.

In my opinion, if you can find comperably priced accomodations NOT on 192 in Kissimmee, you are better off.

But, like I said, and others have as well. Common sense and city-wise behavior is a good thing, even when you ae on vacation. Perhaps especially when you are on vacation.

I hate to say it this way but ou don't have to outrun the lion, you just need to outrun the others in the safari.

When my Dad was down here visiting us this past month, every Saturday he would want to go to Old Town to see the car show. I could not wait for the show to end so we could leave, I just didn't get a good or real safe vibe there!! I guess I'll stick to the theme parks!

192 is what it is, a built up tourist trap area. I don't think you will find roving gangs of murderers walking around Old Town, but you will find the usual tourist trap type of attractions. I think they have a new sling-shot ride there that is their feature attraction. Driving along 192 I see stores like "The .99 cent Store", with all the windows covered in big "99 Cent" signs. Themed miniature golf courses are everywhere. There's even a water park and a store completely devoted to sea shells. People that have never been near an urban area may feel uncomfortable, but I think most people probably have areas like this not too far from where they live.

Oh my god I'm staying on the 192 in November this thread has me very worried, i stayed on I-drive last year now i wish i had booked to stay there instead :flower:

We initially had reservations ay Days Inn at Old Town for 4/4-4/8. My dad got a call from a few friends inviting him to play golf at Disney last week and I asked him to check out Days Inn.My dad is thrifty and usually any hotel is good with him.Since he and my mom will be meeting us in Orlando and staying at the same place I assumed he would think the place was alright.I got a call at work he was in one of the rooms they let him see and he said cancel the reservations right away. He checked out a few places along 192 and he really liked Seralago so that is where we are headed. Hope this helps
