Old People Question

Did anyone else have the Readers Digest Classic Collection

Usually an abridged version of the clasics with three to four separate novels in one book?

I loved reading those and it was great exposure to classic novels for kids wo would otherwise not make it through the unabridged version.
We have a few (my husband had them when we married). I've been reading them recently, and when done, I get rid of them.

We had a few of those, too. I don't know that it was any kind of full set, maybe 3-4 volumes each with 3-4 condensed novels.

We had a set I’m sure it was a door to door sales - no idea brand - do recall using them as library was not an option not one near us and dad was not about to drive us to one that was what the books were for and school just ask him he’d tell you !

We had a reddish color Encyclopedia Brittanica with gold lettering on the covers. I can’t say what year they first made an appearance. Same goes for what year they disppeared!

I had what could be best described as a light version of an encyclopedia. Looking online, it looks like the Golden Book Encyclopedia, but I am not sure. My parents felt if I needed more, I could use the school library or the public library. My mom was educated in the Canadian Public School system in the 1920s and 1930;s in a one room school house. She had kind of strong feelings about the school providing everything a student needed.

I am 48, the youngest of my siblings and I do remember having encyclopedias growing up. I also remember them being sold for a small price at the grocery store on a weekly basis here in Massachusetts. Graduated in 94, we all used them at some point. Thank you for the memories!

kind of off topic but both my kids attended 1st-8th in a one room school house during the 90's and 2000's. almost an unheard of education model for decades but DANG the benefits of it are tremendous.

back to encyclopedias-i think my parents had some set but they were already grossly outdated by the time i was old enough to use them-happens when stuff is bought for child #1 and it's 16 years before child #4 comes in the world :rotfl:.

We did not have a set of proper encyclopedias at home (though I was very familliar with them from the library), but we did have these small science "encyclopedias" that we would buy. They weren't that thick, but covered basic science topics for kids and came out in volumes. We would pick one up every time there was a new one, so we had a nice little shelf of them. I can really only remember the grey covers. They honestly weren't really encyclopedias in any way other than that they used that word in the titles - at least I think so.

My grandparents had a few of those. I found one of my favorite authors through reading one as a child.

We had the Britannica set. I still have the old Atlas book where my Mom used to proudly put the name of family members on top of the page of the state we had visited.

Not sure how my mom and her 3 sisters and brother survived school. First, the school was on the corner of my Grandfather's 160 acre farm, a mile from the house. Second, there was no rental housing available for the teacher, so my Grand parents rented a room to the teacher. With 6 people in about 1,000 square foot farmhouse, there wasn't a lot of room to start with, but to have a renter, and for it to be your teacher had to be awkward.

Yes we did, they were a nice dark brown set. it was my Dad's, he was so proud of it. Mom loaned out one of the volumes and it came back damaged. Dad was not happy.

We still have a set of the supermarket kind. I'm sure in another 10 years, they will be worth millions. We have 4 bookcases full of books. We'll be set when some solar flare wipes out google.

I also had the reader's digest books and National geographic magazines. Got rid of most of them. My kids were aghast. I did keep a dozen or so. My brother had a coworker that visited vet hospitals. Took most of them there.
