Old Navy "Frost Free" coat temp rating question...

I finally broke down and bought me a winter coat temp rated to minus-20. I had picked me up some winter coats from Salvation Army back in September. They were working GREAT until recent wind chills brought a tear to my eye.

My kids have the Old Navy Frost Free coats. They havent complained, yet. But I'm just worried that if I got that cold, they might and I don't want them to freeze. Could someone help me out here?

Kids run at a different temperature then adults. If they aren't complaining about being cold they are fine. A lot of it is what you wear UNDER the coat too. If you are going outside with a t-shirt on under your coat, it isn't going to keep you all that warm no matter what it is "rated". Heck, I picked DD up at school yesterday for a dr appointment and there were kids leaving school to take their college classes wearing SHORTS. It was -7 at the time. They don't feel the cold in the same way we do.

I'm in the same geographical area as you are and it always amazes me when the kids are walking around High School in below zero weather with flip flops on!

Yes If the kids had on pants, they had on either flip flops or those suede slippers they are calling shoes, without socks.

The kids here are just starting to break out the hoodies to wear to school

I find Old Navy Frost Free coats are not good quality at all - every person I know has to return them as the zippers always break, plus, they are not really warm at all. Have them wear hoodies underneath, with neck warmers, hats and gloves, and they will hopefully be warm enough.

I can't tell you how many times we've gone outside for recess in the cold and as I'm all bundled up, my students will come and ask if they can take off their jacket. Can't really judge a coat's warmth by a child's reaction. Try LLBean. They have temp. ratings on their coats and they are a much better quality than Old Navy.

I was asking because we own the Old Navy. Yep, we dress in layers. They must have a better furnace than I do .

I will make sure to get better coats for them when it is time to replace them. So far though, no real complaints. But they weren't pumping gas in biting cold either. LOL.
