Old Key West what can you tell

We just stayed a weekend night at in a studio at OKW- a last minute surprise trip for the kids. We own at BCV and have stayed there and at VWL (my favorite) in the past. We really liked OKW-- especially the room size, being able to park right near the villa, the patio, and the new waterslide at the pool. My husband took our son to the smaller pool, and said it was great as well. The landscaping was very nice, and the atmosphere very laid back. We're looking forward to returning and getting a two bedroom someday, as well as adding on with a small contract so we can go there more often.

The only thing I didn't like-- the color scheme in the room was a bit too pastelly (I know- it's not a real word) for me. But I'd probably love the bright colors at BWV. Hopefully we'll get to check it out in the near future.

Oh, we also had a cute little towel animal (not sure what it was) on the table when we checked in.

Proximity was fantastic and at first we loved the fact that after the bus picked up at HH we were on our way to the parks! Then we realized that that also meant HH was the busses LAST stop on the return. I believe that there were 5 stops before HH. It takes forever.
You obviously didn't figure out the trick of getting off at the FIRST stop on the way in and walking over the bridge. We loved our stay in building 13 last December. It was so nice to watch the bus we wanted come in and take our time walking across the street to get on it.

hmmerr02 says : SSR was awesome! OKW left a lot to be desired. We were in building 13 (near HH). Proximity was fantastic and at first we loved the fact that after the bus picked up at HH we were on our way to the parks! Then we realized that that also meant HH was the busses LAST stop on the return. I believe that there were 5 stops before HH. It takes forever. If you stay at OKW, I"d definately recommend a car.
I echo what Diane says about walking over the bridge.
As for SSR being awesome in this regard----don't/won't they have several bus stops as well once the resort is complete ? I think the plan is for that to be quite a spread out resort as well ?
I really don't feel a car is necessary at OKW (though it's a nice asset). But we've stayed there once without a car and did just fine. In fact, even when we have a car we rarely use it except to do offsite shopping (or to go to Uni/Sea World). We pretty much leave it parked if we're visiting the main WDW parks.

In fact, we find taking a car to the parks takes much more time than the bus. Several times we have had folks who drove to the park while we took the bus. In every case, we arrived at both meeting points before them. They too didn't like the idea of "waiting for a bus", but our wait for the bus ended up in us "waiting for them" to get in from the parking lot! The only scenario that makes sense to drive from OKW is when you are going to AK. The bus to AK stops at Blizzard Beach and takes quite awhile, plus the bus area at AK is almost as far as the parking lot.

We love OKW and the layout. We go on vacation to relax. The idea of rushing rushing rushing is not our style. We enjoy spending time at BW during the day, but at night we enjoy the peace and quiet at OKW. If you want a vacation at a resort that has a high-energy nightlife then OKW is probably not for you. But for relaxation, great views, and a relaxed atmosphere you cant beat OKW. As for the buses having several stops, we don’t mind a bit. After all the buses take us quite close to our own villa. Dianaschlicht has the right idea. If you are staying in villa #13 or one nearby simply get off at the first stop at night and walk back.

Our family of 6 LOVES OKW! Not only does it offer the most room for the lowest points of all other DVC resorts, but it has great transportation options. We learned the trick about getting on the bus at HH and walking over the bridge on return trip or vice versa depending upon which building we stayed in. The new themed pool looks great! It was late upon completion last Dec. when we were there so we didn't get to try it out! Gives us a reason to go back I guess!

Don't forget to check out the activity calendar they give you at check in. Lots of fun stuff that doesn't cost much or anything at all! My DD 11 loved the fishing excursion and wants to do it again next time.

You'll have a great time there!

Hi
i'm hoping to stay in OKW in Aug 06, should i expect the resort and park to be very busy??

I was wondering the same thing. My family is going at the end of February and would love to know how busy it is then. This will be our first time to disney with our children and are very excited to be staying at OKW.
