So our oldest kitty is now 18. She is slowly going into kidney failure. She pees wherever she happens to be whenever she feels the urge.

While I will miss her when she is gone and will be utterly and totally grief stricken when she passes. . .I am SO TIRED OF CLEANING OUR CARPET.

Every. Single. Night. I get down and find where she's peed and clean it up. At least once a month I shampoo the carpets. I have 2 sets of gallon jugs of pet enzyme and vinegar in the 3 rooms that are her entire domain, and backups sets in the laundry closet.

Okay. Vent over. I love my old kitty and just thinking about the fact that she's in the final stage of her life makes me . But oh, I won't miss the pee everywhere.

I bet she's tired too, do the right thing for her.

Oh I will when the time is right. I trust our vet to tell us and our vet says she still leads a pretty happy life. . .without much bladder control.

Aww, man, I kinda know how you feel. I mean, you love your cat but ugh! cat pee is vile. When my Minkydog started going down he was vomiting everywhere. My carpets took a beating--they're only about a year old, thanks to a previous episode of severe diarrhea on Minky's part.:headache: I loved him dearly and I miss him a lot, but I am really really glad I'm not cleaning up vomit anymore.:headache:

our 18 year old kitty just got the :thumbsup2 from the Vet, which totally surprised me. I'm glad he's doing well now but I know he's on borrowed time. just a thought, do you have an available bathroom you can make his room for a portion of the day to cut down in incidents? our cat got the main upstairs bathroom a few years ago and although I miss the room, him having the bathroom to himself on the top floor where we keep his litter box and his water & food has kept him from roaming the house and limited where accidents happen. if it happens it's usually in his bed where I can easily wash it.

I hope things go ok:flower3:

We just went through this last year. I know how you feel---I had very mixed feelings. I missed the young Rocky, but the incontinent one, it was hard.

I do feel good that he lived a very long life. Just the last year was very hard to see him decline.

DH and have taken a vow to replace ALL the carpets when the dogs pass and the cats pass. (Dogs = mud).

One day. . .

 Good to know we feel each other's pain.

I'm glad you've found a way to make things easier for your kitty!

I like the idea, but our bathrooms aren't very big. It's an older house, built in the mid-80's before the huge bathrooms.

At least she does have enough bladder control that she doesn't pee on the beds or in the chairs or on her favorite towel in front of the picture window. . .I guess I should be thankful of that. It's just puddles in the carpet.

 to you too! I know you must be missing your Rocky!

God love ya, OP, for choosing to give your kitty whatever time she has left comfortably, rather than worrying about your carpets. :thumbsup2 I know it's frustrating to deal with the peeing issues, but carpets/floors can be replaced. Knowing what you are doing for a beloved pet's final days/weeks/months...is priceless. :)

Older cats tend to have kidney issues, you might want to have her checked at the vet. Lots of things can be given to help. We had one cat that lived to 19 and another cat is 20 now, so lots of experience in that dept!

My Mom's cat Smudge just died Saturday of kidney failure in my Mother's arms at age 19. My brother in law has been pulling up carpet after work all this week. Next weekend we are all going over to put in Mom's new bamboo flooring. It was very sad & We will miss Smudge but Mom's house will smell so much better!

Yeah. . I feel you. My beloved dog had colon cancer at 15 and basically couldn't control his runny bowels. :( We confined him to the kitchen with a baby gate at night. It still wasn't much fun to clean up in the morning, but was much easier cleaning the linoleum than the carpet.

I suppose with a cat it would be harder to confine her. How about the laundry room, the garage, or even just one bedroom. It would probably lessen the damage. Cat pee is truly vile.

Oh yeah. . .

I understand completely. I got so tired of the urine smell--had to pull up carpets, clean constantly. I miss KP tremendously...but I'm not sorry that the cleaning has stopped!

If its only three rooms, put down some carpet protector film.

Roll it out, stick it to the carpet, and just wipe up the pee with a paper towel. I also mist the area with some of the enzyme stuff to take care of any lingering odors. But no pee smell in the carpet. But you'll want to replace the carpet and pad after she passes. And check the condition of the subfloor underneath before the new carpet/flooring is put down.

I could have written your post about my 18 year old kitty! We love him, but oh my! To add to it, our 14 year old dog who can no longer hold her potty every day before we get home from work. Ugh. They are restricted to the main area of the house (no bedrooms!). We buy resolve and paper towels in bulk and just leave the carpet cleaner sitting out for weekly cleanings. I love them and will be devastated when they are gone, but geez...it's gross!

I feel the exact same away about my cats.

Diana passed away last year. While I miss her sweet goodness, I DO NOT miss her peeing all over the place. She ruined my couch and I had to throw out some clothes because they fell on the floor of my closet and she peed on them.

Fergie is 18 and I will miss her terribly when she's gone, but I won't miss her incessant meowing all hours of the night. It will be nice to get a solid night's sleep without being jarred awake 2 or 3 times a night.

Sometimes I feel guilty thinking it, but at 3:00 AM ...

Not to sound to much like a previous President, but I feel your pain! My 19 year old cat is a fur ball spitter. My carpets at my place up north have been through the ringer. It seems like nearly everyday I'm using the rug cleaner when up there.

Moved down south this winter, and made the screened out door porch the old guys new home. He can come inside for short periods if he wants, but in general at this point he stays outside. And seems to really enjoy his new digs. The many birds in the trees keep him entertained. He can spit up all he wants now and it is easy to clean! Now if I can only get him to lower his meow. He seems to be going deaf and doesn't understand his own cry sound.

Our cat Junior will be 16 in July and we have been having the same issues. We tore out the carpeting and put down laminate floors (after dh scrubbed and sprayed to get rid of the smell in the floor UNDER the carpet). He had been peeing there but has stopped, and has most "accidents" at the bottom of the basement stairs which is cement and easier to clean. I have had to throw out clothing as well. I will miss him terribly when he goes but won't miss the pee issues. Ugh.
