OKW/SSR comparisons please

The hallway is like a front lawn of a house/home. It may or may not give you a sense of a "WELCOME HOME" atmosphere.
Building a horrible hallway is to me like an isult to DVC members...we deserve better.

The topic of this thread is to compare SSR to OKW, not hallways to front lawns.

So the hallway doesn't ring your bell. Perhaps you should just move on. I believe your home resort is BCV so if you know how to plan ahead you should never have to see an SSR hallway again. Frankly, when we stayed at BWV in May, I found our unit to be in major need of some refurb. The moldings around the doors and the walls were filthy. The kitchen floor greeted us with a trail of ants leading straight under the frig. The carpet made my kids' socks black. We still had a great stay but after feeling "welcomed home" by the pristine, new, lovely interiors of the SSR units we had on our last two trips, we didn't feel as "welcomed" by BWV. Did we deserve better? Maybe, but then again I look at my DVC as a luxury, not something that I deserve to have as I want it, every stay, for the rest of my life. These are timeshares, not birthrights. The great location and being at the Happiest Place on Earth helped us to not sit in our unit weeping over dirty walls and moldings. Did I take pictures of the grungy moldings at BWV and then put those pics in my sig? Nope, because frankly I didn't think any of you were that interested and its a hotel and you have to expect that sort of thing. If joining DVC made you think you deserved perks that included themed hallways than I think your expectations were a tad high.

I totally joined for the themed hallways. :rolleyes1

Holy Cow!!! NO THEMED HALLWAYS!!!!

I am so demanding a refund.

Maybe Seabright would find their day a whole light brighter if they filled their lives (ie:sigs) with things that make them happy. Man, I am glad that I don't live my life with such negativity. What a waste. Because most of us thank our lucky stars every day that we are able to afford such a luxury as DVC. For me, I am glad that my DH is home safe and not in a desert somewhere. Now if only SSR would have themed hallways my life would be complete. Sheesh.

To say that ANY DVC resort is "subpar" is just ridiculous to me.............they are all gorgeous resorts with something different to offer everyone. This debate goes on with all the DVC resorts. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences in what THEY want out of a resort. Some prefer quiet and serene.....some bustling with action........some decor formal.....some decor casual.......etc
There is nothing wrong with any of the DVC resorts----they are all unique and different in their own right.
Enjoy your trip Michele :cool1:
I happen to think SSR is "subpar" in terms of the value received for the points required to rent a unit. It's not ridiculous, it's merely fact. By definition, 50 percent of the resorts at WDW are "subpar." OKW and SSR have a lot in common in terms of location and amenities. The difference is that OKW is dirt cheap points-wise and has huge units. SSR costs almost as much as the theme park resorts while adopting their small room size.

SSR is a very nice resort and has a lot of good things going for it. It's not for me, but not everything is. Were it not for my fear of being forced to stay there on a less-than-seven-month reservation, I would have nary a bad word to say about it. But make no mistake, SSR does, because of its unreasonably high point requirements, devalue the other resorts.

If rooms at SSR were to cost the same or a little less than units at OKW I would be raving about what a great thing it was, although I still think it is too big. But Disney figured out that they could squeeze a little more out of buyers in terms of the number of points per night, and so they stuck it to them, and in the process all the rest of the DVC owners.

My personal opinion is that Disney breached the fiduciary obligation that it had to the non-SSR members by bringing the resort in with a point chart that was seriously out of line with the other resorts. I have nothing against those who have purchased at SSR. But I do think the Disney people who did this are just a bunch of crooks.

Again, SSR is only "sub-par", in my opinion, when compared to what you get at the other resorts for the same number of points. If the redemption chart were more reasonable, the DVC-2042 owners would not be quacking nearly so loudly.

This just in (SSR will be closed for the month of August while crews remove the hallways. Guest will be required to find there on way in while this phase is in progress) OP you will have a great time no matter which resort you stay in. Have a great trip

WHOA you scared me, I had to go back and read more now I understand. I just wanted to say to the op. i feel like SSR OKW where alot alike IMOP and either chiose would be great.

The OP wants to say sorry to bring up what seems to be a sore point. This was my first visit to the DVC forum since I'm just going as a renter. I had no idea this topic would produce such enthusiastic responses.

I think either resort would have provided our family with everything we needed. We did choose OKW just for the larger rooms. I will defintely check out SSR while we are there if we get a chance. It looks very nice also.

Have a great trip :thumbsup2 and I am glad you made the right decision for your family. You will have a blast.

SSR is the third cheapest on-site DVC resort points-wise after OKW and BWV standard view (which has limited availability). BWV preferred view, BCV and VWL all have significantly higher point costs, so I don't understand how you can feel that SSR has unreasonably high points.

You may say because of the location, but for some the location is bonus compared to other resorts. We would much rather have DTD within close walking distance and take a bus to the parks than the other way around.

OKW was the first built, and yes does have larger rooms and nice low points costs. But since then room sizes have been the same for all new DVC resorts, and the points costs were increased significantly. One of the many reasons that we bough SSR was the lower points cost compared to BCV, VWL and BWV preferred. Along with the extra 12 years that made it great value in comparison to the other resorts to us.

Really? It's OK we'll just shimmy up the balconies. Just like to say that the negative posts by certain individuals have done nothing to dampen my enthusiasm about visiting SSR for the first time in a month's time - if that was the intention, sorry, you've failed.

I hope you know I was kidding, no one loves SSR more than me! IMOP :rotfl2:

You walk the hallways at vWL, BWV, BCV and you will find "hidden mickeys." You walk the walkways at OKW and you will see "sea shells" embedded on the concrete. Walk this dark (picture was taken at miday with a slow shuuter speed to make the picture brighter..notice the lights are "on") hallway at SSR and you will see "Andreas Fault" at the bottom of your feet.

No offense to VWL but this photo is just downright scarey to me of their halls.

And I find this photo very inviting.

My point is I think anything can be unattractive in certain photos. How much time does one really spend looking at hallways anyway.

Hey Sammie, that photo of the hallways at VWL reminds me of the hallway scene in the Shining!

Geez--I REALLY hope they get all that work done before Labor Day weekend--DNiece is getting married that Sunday. Though normally I'd be right there with Pigby shimmying up and down the balconies, I might have a harder time doing so in formal wear and heels--not to mention all the youngsters chanting.."We see London, We see France, We see Miss D's under... (well, you get the idea)

D'ya think they might put some zip-lines or something for the less agile or formally dressed??

Thanks for the laugh :goodvibes

OKW is close to Downtown Disney via boat or car. On the other hand SSR is right there at Downtown disney. anybody and I mean anybody (strangers ) can just walk into the resort without questions.
When we were at DD about to board the boat to OKW, a couple was not allowed to board the boat because the captain of the boat( luckily) asked them if they were guests at the resorts SSR/OKW and they said they were not members but would just like to see the resorts. A person on the dock told them just to take the sidewalk to SSR and it should not be a problem.

I just addressed your similar comment on the other thread (interesting that you have two posts and both of them relate to this topic). I have ridden the boat to SSR, POR/POFQ, taken buses/monorails to many resorts, and I have never had any Disney employee/driver/captain ask me if I am staying at that resort. Anyone can take any form of Disney transportation, whether they are an onsite guest or not. If you are driving into a resort they will ask if you are a guest or eating at the resort (may even check your ADR) but they will let you in unless something really alerts them to do otherwise. Your theory that all WDW resorts but SSR do a bang up job of keeping perverts off the property is flimsy at best.
