I'm trying to book an impromptu trip for the week of 8/16/09, and OKW and SSR are the only DVC resorts that have availability for all 5 nights of our stay. We've stayed at SSR (and loved it), but I would like to try OKW. BUT-- my kids are pool aficienados and I'd like to know something about the pool. I can't tell from any pictures I've found so far-- is the water slide any good?

TIA!! princess:

My kids really liked the slide at OKW, they were only 6 and 8 at the time though. The slide is enclosed so you are in the dark most of the time. We went in Jan so we were pretty much the only ones in the pool and they ran a continous loop for a good 45 min.

Thanks! Mine are 9 and 7 so that would be about right!

A couple of years ago, we stayed at BCV with its fabled SAB pool. We spent most of one afternoon at SAB, and toward the end of the trip we planned another afternoon at SAB.

As soon as we started walking out to the pool DD (at that time 5, and an avid swimmer) said, "I want to go to the pool with the sandcastle slide!"

Which is OKW, of course.

Truth is, I think all of the DVC pools are very good...especially for kids.

I am a strong advocate, as a 38 yo child, of the waterslide at OKW. Any/All people I have brought to OKW have all raved about the slide as it is winding and fast. One note for small children though; the speed at which you enter the pool more than likily will bring them underwater. If they are not good swimmers, make sure they have on life vests to bring them back up quickly.

In my opinion, the sandcastle slide at Old Key West is, by far, the best pool slide in Disney World. The slide is totally enclosed so the chute always stays saturated. This helps lubricate the surface which ends up in a super fast experience. Your speed is so fast you may get thrown under water at the end of the ride. The slide is also very smooth and you don't experience any bumps between sections of the tube where they are assembled together. The individual pieces fit together perfectly which results in a super glassy smooth experience. I did the slide at Boardwalk last summer and experienced a bump about every 10 feet when going down the chute. The sections were so poorly connected it was almost painful on my back when hitting the ridges on the way down. To make a long story short, your kids will love the OKW sandcastle slide!

OKW, favorite resort, favorite pool slide! Son 12, Niece 8, Nephew 3 1/2, a continual loop, one thing's for sure after a night of it, everybody slept well!

It's a great slide. It can pull you under at the end, but it's also not real deep. My kids have been enjoying it since they were 4 and were barely swimming. They usually can't get enough of it when we are there.

Have fun!!!

OKW is one of our favorite resorts. Our kids were 9 & 5 the last time we went and they LOVED LOVED LOVED the slide! There is also a great sand beach they loved too! I would pick OKW every time if given a choice!

My kids (4&7) loved the slide - although enclosed it is really not dark. It is not a tube slide - just a corkscrew inside the castle building.

Also as PP mentioned my kids also LOVED the sand. We let them pick last time SSR or OKW - they'll take the sand any day.
