OKW Live-should they be ckiing room id for pool?

We were waiting on the bus for extra magic hours at Miller Rd stop and got to talking to a couple from Australia. They had been swimming and were in suits and wrapped in towels with backpacks. Anyway, they were worried that they wouldn't be able to get back to EPCOT in time for the 945 shuttle that their hotel provided back to their hotel. They were staying off property.

I rode a boat to DTD from OKW once with DVCers who were staying off property but wanted to enjoy the amenities of "their" resort. I think it happens often, but not enough for Disney to do anything about it. Should they? I think so, but I don't necessarily expect anything to be done. I sent Member Satisfaction team a letter about these things one time. In the response, I remember that they didn't specifically address my thoughts, and so, I figured I did what I could.

Yes, they SHOULD be checking, but at those small neighborhood pools, it would be pretty difficult unless they had a locked gate only accessible by KTTW. That's what they did at Kidani, and I wouldn't be opposed to it at all the DVC resort pools...main or secondary.

We were at Disney in late May/early June, and decided to take a look around OKW - we own there, but were staying at BWV. As we walked thru the pool area, we saw CMs asking the people around the pool to show their room keys. I, for one, was happy to see that and wish all Disney pools would do the same!

Just curious, but do you know if the keyed entry has ever worked?

When we were there last May, it wasn't working. The gate lock was busted in October, so it never latched. When we were there at the beginning of this month, they had installed a new latch system, but it didn't require a keycard for entry.

It happens all of the time, no matter which resorts (well actually it happens more at pools near the parks). Seen it many times, esp when staying at the CR and BC. If Disney doesn't want to deal with it, there's really nothing we can do about it. I have stayed at WL and the lifeguards went around and checked room IDs (summer-July) and at least 25 people were asked to leave.

Sadly it happens because there are people who think there is nothing wrong with it. I seriously can not understand who would want to swim in a pool that badly, its a hassle for us at times to even make it to the pool.

I do agree that all the pools with slides especially, should have gated access.

FYI, it happens all the time at the neighborhood pools at OKW. They are a bit too easy for the locals to access. I wonder if that's true of SSR too? I never hear much about it there though.

Tell them to check out the pool at the Boardwalk. Those Aussies will love the clown slide.

We had a large gap between visiting WDW from 1996 until 2009. We were so surprised during our April 2009 visit that the buses no longer required that you show your KTTW card to get onboard. And I'm pretty sure that because of this change there are more people who board the buses at DTD are not all staying at a Disney resort. And possibly at Boardwalk or Beach Club (a boat ride away from BWV) since you can park at the Boardwalk lot to visit the Boardwalk and there are no restrictions on the number of hours you can park. Or for that matter what is to prevent you from making a breakfast reservation at any Disney Resort and then leaving your car at that parking lot all day while you use the Disney transportation and go to the parks?

So I guess I'm not surprised to hear that people would think of their home resort as a place to pool hop to even when they are not staying on property. To me it all sounds like more trouble than it's worth. I'm not really sold on pool hopping when I have a perfectly good pool at the resort where I'm staying at, so I can't imagine doing what that Australian couple were doing.

The question is, is it enough of a problem to justify the expense of gating the pools? That expense would be picked up by dues, and unless it is a problem where the non-guests are overcrowding the pool, I don't see the point.

Add to that the pool hopping privilege given to DVC owners staying onsite, meaning that ALL the pools would then need to be staffed to check for that ID, as the room keys reader are only programmed to work with that resort's key cards.

Then again, given the pool upgrade underway at SSR, one has to wonder if pool hopping is ending soon, anyway.

We were there in January. I also did not think the latch looked like it had anywhere where you would swipe your KTTW card. When I came back and made a comment on another board that it is okay for AKL guests to use the Kidani pool (which is currently is) - I got in a discussion where it was insisted that the latch at the Kidani pool was made for a card swipe. Now I wasn't investigating it that thoroughly, but I didn't see anything that looked like that. It was just a button/bar type thing that you pushed on to release the gate.

Yes, your right about Vero Beach. We were there the beginning of May and the CM told me she caught 25 people trying to get in that didn't have room keys.

That was the case at the DLH at Disneyland. I know this because DH came back to the room for his key just so he could go for a swim mumbling something along the lines of "Well, we don't need keys at WDW!"

That's because you don't need to have a KTTW to board WDW transportation. I'm not sure about the various park tickets that are sold at the parks, but the tickets sold to UK visitors always state that they include "unlimited use of WDW transportation." This isn't a new thing either - we have been visiting WDW since 1980 and it's been that way since then.

I would be ok with checking for ID in any of the property resorts, DVC or otherwise. No KTTW no pool, WHY is this such a simple concept? Shawn

They should be carding all resort guests and DVC members staying on property using the amenities! Membership isn't free!
