Here's the scenario...

We're planning a split stay between OKW and AKV (May 2012)

first 5 days in a studio, next five days in a 1 bedroom

Question, would you stay at OKW for the first five days (studio) or the last 5 days (1BR)?

I've been told the OKW rooms have more sq footage of any resort so I was thinking it would be better to do the studio part of the trip there since it's two beds instead of a sleeper sofa. On the other hand, wouldn't mind staying in a newly refurbished 1BR. Appreciate your thoughts! :listen:

Most of the buildings at OKW have no elevators. I had to haul the luggage up and down the stairs to the 3rd floor and this was no fun. The rooms are larger and pretty comfortable, but needed refurbishing. We stayed there 3 times and always had issues. I won't stay there again until all the units are updated, not worth the let down.

You can always have Bell Services move your luggage up and down the stairs. And I believe the remodel is completed.

I would suggest getting the studio at OKW for the first part of your stay and then moving to AKV and getting a 1 BR. That way you'll be happy with the large studio and delighted with the extra bathroom at AKV later.

I agree with CoolDisneyCat that during your second segment you'll be more willing to spend some time at the villa and relaxing on the balcony and watching the animals might be nice.

If the two beds in the studio are important to you, I'd stay at OKW for that part.

You really won't notice the extra space at OKW in a studio because the second bed takes up the extra room. We haven't stayed at AKV, but I know a BCV studio seemed larger than OKW, even though it was considerably smaller in square footage.

I guess the real question is whether space or beds during the studio stay is more important to you.

If someone sleeping on the sofabed isn't a problem and you want more space, I'd do the studio at AKV and the 1 BR at OKW. There is a HUGE difference is size difference in the size of the one bedrooms.

Also, I'd look at the points difference for the various options. You might be able to get 4 nights in an AKV studio and 3 nights in an OKW 1 BR for a reasonable points cost, depending on the nights of the week. And that might be a much better value than 5 nights in a studio. Studios tend to close in on you after a few days.

Whatever you decide, I'd certainly do the one-bedroom portion of the stay last. I would not want to move from a 1 BR to a studio!

Good luck and have a great trip.

Whatever you choose, I'd go for OKW first because you will be disappointed with the smaller rooms at the other resort after the fact.

DUH - I mean OKW last because you'll be disappointed with the smaller room at the other resort.

It would be nice to do the 1 bdrm last, as then you'll have the washer/dryer right in your room if you want to get your clothes washed before going home. That is always nice so you don't have to face a big pile of laundry at the end of vacation!

In my mind's eye it's pretty much a toss-up. Both resorts provide a relaxing atmosphere. I like both but am partial to OKW. I think it depends upon what the focus of your visit will up. It looks like you'll be there for either the ending of the Flower Festival or the beginning of the Star Wars Weekends. If your interest is either of those then I would select OKW, either a studio or the 1 BR, due to proximity to Epcot and HS. The refurb completion at OKW is kind of old news now. The past three years we've been there and stayed in a refurbished studio. In addition to having the larger rooms of the DVC resorts the studio bathrooms are much larger also. In either case I think its a win-win.

I'd stay in the 1 bedroom (no matter where it is) the last half so you can do laundry and pack clean clothes for the trip home.

Since the two queen beds seemed appealing to you I'd go with OKW for the studio and move to the AKV 1BR. I think I'd have a difficult time leaving the animals to move to OKW even though we like the resort a lot. And if you book a Kidani 1BR you'll have 2 bathrooms! :thumbsup2

Thanks everyone for your input!

This is kind of where my head was. Take the OKW studio first and then hit Kidani next for 1br w 2 bath.;)

I'm a point miser so I would pick which ever one bed was less points for the second half.

The 2 beds in the OKW studio might be great for sleeping, but I would rather have a sofa to sit in & relax at the end of the day. I can't sit comfortably on a bed, and the 2 chairs next to the table, well, they're fine for eating, but not relaxing. We just didn't like the OKW studio.

OKW has the lowest points required for a villa. Are you sure you wouldn't be able to get a 1 bedroom there, as well as a 1 bedroom at AKV?

hard question.

one of the problem with OKW is no elevators (except 62-64 building) - secondly for the studios the laundry mat is outside near the swimming pool.

now if you can go swimming while your clothes are being washed - great - it is pretty wonderfully.

but if you have something else you must do - then OKW is not as convenience as AKV.

AKV jambo house has the laundry mat on the same floor as the studios - 5th.

or AKV Kidani - has it on the lobby floor (I think) - it could be a long walk depending upon where you are located. but it is inside not outside.

the laundry mat at AKV (both of them) has a TV - OKW does NOT.

AKV has a loveseat that is sofa bed - it is small (only full size). OKW has 2 queen beds. agree about the seating space. although OKW has chairs - they are not that comfortable. Of course if you are not planning on staying in the rooms that much - it does not matter. How much TV do you watch on a vacation at Disney?

some people hate split stays - but I do like them.

might go with a studio at OKW first - then a 1-bedroom at AKV.
with a 1-bedroom no matter which the washer/dryer are in the room.
