OKW extention-sould we get it for $15?!?!

We are not extending but back in April our guide said we could at $15 per pt if we decided within a week or two & although he did not elaborate we just presumed it was only because we had closed Feb 7 which was still within "$15 window". Looking at it realistically - if a contract didn't change hands before Feb. 29 then $15 cannot be considered possible; looking at it optimistically - it can't hurt to ask.

I think you have a perfectly resonable reason to ask. All they can say is sorry we can't do that. There have been times when I have ask to talk to a manager, and have been surprised at their willingness to help me, you never know until you try.:goodvibes

Why do you want the extension? OKW won't expire until 2042. For many of us, that's the best part of the deal. It will go away at some point and not be a burden that may be unwanted when we are ready for nursing homes.

Personally I would consider an add on at SSR before I would want an OKW extension. YMMV.
That was precisely my rationale for declining the offer. The extension would mean paying now for something I wouldn't use for 34 years. If I wanted to put more money in DVC, I'd much rather buy an add-on with points I can use now.

Thanks for all the replies.
I agree that maybe this is a more emotional decision than any other. I'll be 66 when 2042 hits, will I still want the fees when I hopefully will be retired or close to it? With our family of 4, kids 6 & 5, would it be better to buy more points in a year or 2 so we can move up to a 1 bedroom instead of a studio as the kids get older? Or do we just stick with what we got & be happy with it? That's where we're at right now!!

Others may have different opinions, but I didn't get into timeshare to stay in a hotel room. I want a kitchen, a washer/dryer, and separate sleeping spaces for the adults/kids.

To me, a studio is nothing more than a gussied-up hotel room. I'd go with an add-on to move up in size.

Initially, when our boys were young, we stayed in studios. Long trips (12-15 nights) and we enjoyed it. Now my boys are 11 and 9. We've been staying in 1 bedrooms for the last 2 years because they don't like to sleep together (my little one kicks). Christmas we are moving up to a 2 bedroom for the first time, so they can have their own room and the family can enjoy the living room.
So my experience has been, that as the boys grew, so did our accomodations.
I chose not to extend either. If I invest anymore money into DVC, it will be an add-on that my family can use now, to enjoy now. We have the next 40 odd years covered with SSR and AKV contracts. I won't be heartbroken if I can't stay at OKW in 2054.

We & our 3 :dance3: talked about it altogether; we all agree we love OKW & probably will not want to see that contract end in 2042 ( it wasn't easy taking the sentimental feelings out of the decision making ).
But we are at a point in our lives where we like taking longer vacations & our eldest two are now at age where they are inviting friends to come along (large accommodations &/or additional unit !) and they'll soon make trips with just the friends, etc.

So DH & I have decided to decline extension and put that $ towards an add-on in next year at SSR or AKV (or perhaps BLT). That gives us the benefit of better options in the next 34 years together as a family or the kids doing their own trips too.

I think that is an excellent decision!
