OKW Cleanliness ?

Our first trip home is coming up soon in a one bedroom at OKW. I'm wondering what others do about using the dishes, glasses and pots in the the kitchen, and also the jacuzzi. When was the last time the dishes went through the dishwasher? What if the last several vacationers didn't use the stove decoration? (PamOKW) Have you been able to tell how long these things have been unused? Is the jacuzzi turned on by housekeeping when they clean for the next guest?

Would you please share what you usually do, if anything, regarding cleanliness when you check into a room? Thanks.

The jacuzzi is more like a tub, you fill it and empty it with each use. The glasses and such when we were there last were run through by housekeeping, I assume, after the last visitors, as we found some in the dishwasher, and most in the cabinets.

Only stayed once, but we had 2 2-bedrooms and both were wonderfully clean. =)

Housekeeping runs everything through the dishwasher (not sure about pots, etc.) They also clean the tub. They do a very thorough job of cleaning between guests. You'll see them cleaning the individual window blind slats, etc. But, I agree that if you think about it too much you can get scared about "where things have been". I haven't done it yet, but in the future I think I might wash everything myself "one more time" just to be safe. ;)

On one of our trips to OKW we had some food that we wanted to store and the freezer in the storage area was being serviced. They let us put our food items in the 2 BdRm that we were going to be staying in before the scheduled time and while they were still cleaning it. I saw that they had all of the cabinets open where the dishes and pots and pans were and they were in the diswasher being cleaned. I told the girl that I was impressed that she could get all of it in the diswasher and she said it takes practice. She was also dusting the cabinets. I put the luggage in the bedrooms and noticed that the tub had just been cleaned. We thought it was great that they let us put our things away this time. I have always found that the rooms were very clean and have never been concerned about the condition of the dishes or pots and pans. I have used the "stove decoration" many times and it always looks like it has never been used. I like to cook and we have at least one meal in our "Home" away from Home. We like to sit out and look at the property while enjoying one meal.

I always run the items I know I'll be using thru the dishwasher, or if I'm in a studio, I handwash what I'll need. If everything else looks OK, then I don't worry. ( I DO look at everything, though!)

We did have one bad experience at OKW in Feb. The front desk sent us to our 1-bedrm, saying it was ready. However, upon our arrival, it was still being cleaned, and the housekeepers told us to come back in 15 minutes. When we returned, they were still cleaning, but told us to enter anyway (it was well after 4:00 p.m.). I could not believe the condition of the place! Yikes! The place had been absolutely trashed by the previous tenants. Chocolate cake was smeared all over the floors, walls, and the outside porch--floor, chairs, railing! Garbage everywhere! The housekeeping staff cleaned for awhile longer then left, dropping garbage on the stairs on their way down, which was not picked up. (It was like they couldn't get away from there fast enough! I can't imagine what it was like when they first entered.) I started cleaning, as the frosting was all over the place. My DH called and requested that housekeeping come back and do a thorough job, as by that time, the whole place just FELT dirty. (It was our first stay as DVC'ers--what a start!!) Anyway, the next day, they returned and cleaned up. After that, we just loved the 1-bedroom and didn't want to leave.

As I realize that something like this can happen at ANY resort, I have ressies to return to OKW in Nov and am looking forward to it. OKW is a great place! You will love it there!

We have been OKW members since 2/95, and I can't remember a single incident where the accommodations were not in perfect order, from studio (most of the time) up to GV (1 wonderful time). I would be curious to find out whether the prior guests who left a chocolate mess all over were actually DVC members or not. Call me naive, but I just can't fathom a member leaving a mess like that. I am sure your next stay will be up to expectations. Oh dear, how will I wait 39 more days until we leave to OKW??!! :D

Clean as a whistle! Nothing dirty, nothing out of order, a great 2BR with everything sparkling.

Gail Reale--at the time, I was wondering the same thing--were they DVC'ers or not? I couldn't believe someone had left the place in such a condition. I felt bad for housekeeping--I know they tried.

Regardless of that mess, OKW is one of our favorite places. (It feels like a real "home.") :sunny:

I would hope that the people that left such a mess were charged for the extra cleaning required. If not, they'll never learn and may do it again in the future - whether they're DVC members or not.
Most hotels will charge if you leave an unusual mess. However, most people don't even know this because they treat places reasonably.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't assume they weren't DVC members. Some people just don't care. If they are people who would consider such behavior they certainly wouldn't consider "fellow members" investments. I bet some folks who get their ressie through Disney treat the place better because they fear what "the members" might think. (Just trying to say there are good and bad apples in both baskets.)

It's stories like these that make my want to "double wash" what already looks clean. ;)

I jus stayed in a studio in OKW and was concerned about the samething. There was a sticker inside the cabinet saying that per health regulations, all the dishes are sterilized after each stay.

We have stayed there twice now and have found everything in great condition. I you have concerns a cm or the mgr can answer any questions you have.

I am always amazed at how clean they can get those vacation homes in such a short time. I try to compare the homes to summer beach rentals and there is surely NO comparison. I am never dissapointed in the condition of the OKW or BW homes. A few trips back, my daughter had put her retainer on the frame of the bed. She reached through where the bed and the headboard meet, under the mattress and hooked it on there. She said it was "safe" there... Of course it was the night before we left and she forgot it. When I called they had found it. Now, to find that thing, they must have moved the boxspring off the frame to clean back there. Not too shabby!

WE have been members since 1997, and have had numerous trips in all sizes of accommodations at OKW. We have always found everything in perfectly clean condition, and I know they inspect everything carefully. On our last trip, our 2 bedroom was not ready even by 4:00. It turned out the place had been trashed by the past visitor also, and they even steamed the carpet!! It was still damp in a few places! I felt very sure of everything after learning how long it took them to clean up.

If you are concerned about germs about the unit, bring some bleach and use it in the tub. Clorax has some eipes that are out now and could be used in a pinch.
I've never had a problem with our unit.

The 2BR has a dishwasher! Thanks for letting me know. It was pain cleaning them in the jacuzzi. Soap suds all over the place.;)

Everytime we used BW or OKW everything was great. True I am a guy and we sometimes don't notice everyhting but even my wife said it was great

We very seldom have housekeeping problems, but our May trip did. The unit was generally clean, but it was obvious the tables, windows and TV had not been cleaned. There were fingerprints everywhere, coffee rings and sticky stuff on the tables. :(

Of course we called housekeeping, and they said they'd send someone right out. We left, and when we returned after midnight, nothing had been done.

Before breakfast the next morning we cleaned the TV and tables ourselves. Even on our full housekeeping day the fingerprints we left were not cleaned off.

Hopefully this is a one-time problem, and not a symptom of something worse!

Once at OKW I took a bowl from the cabinet and there was food stuck on it. No biggie, I washed it by hand. I just kept an eye on the dishes the first time they were used to check for others that might have slipped by housekeeping. I must say I dont like the dishwasing soap. I think I'll bring my own next time.
