OKW Beds: Hard As A Rock? Or Just Us?

Well... This seems to be a good topic of discussion.

OK... Lets do this: Everyone that has had what they feel is a hard mattress please list the resort and the room number.

I'll start:

OKW studio #2225. Felt like I was sleeping on pagan alter stone or something.:headache:

OKW has been the worst for me so far. AKV and VWL are also what I would call "firm" but they had SOME give, not AS HARD as OKW.

We have a Select Comfort bed at home and I sleep on only a 25 or 30 which is VERY, VERY soft so I can never sleep on vacations but the rock hard thing is especially back breaking for me.:sad2: I didn't know you could request an egg crate. Is that something you can request when you check-in and just have it put on by MK right away?:confused3

Our bed was way too hard. I had to take a Darvaset every night about 2:00AM just to sleep through the night.

It was a one-bedroom in building 15 - ground floor. I don't remember the number

Since we pay the annual maintenence fees is the information on what types of beds disney orders for DVC properties available to members? Seems it should be.

well OKW started with soft beds - and got the complaints mind included.

for people with bad backs - soft beds are horrible. this last trip staying at SSR had to have housekeeping bring me those planks.

second soft beds in the end cost more - they have to replaced more frequently. So no complaints about the rising cost of upkeep.

while the harder bed cost more upfront - since it last longer - it the long run it is cheaper.

love the beds at OKW - hate those at SSR. although do appreciate SSR more and more.

now you know what FRED and Wilma and Barney and Betty had to sleep on YEARS AGO and I think that's where Disney got those beds made. In BEDROCK:lmao:

If you lift up the bottom of the mattress and look on the under side it reads:

"MADE OF FLINTSTONE, THE ORIGINAL SLEEP NUMBER BED" with the only number available at the time was (0):goodvibes

I *love* the bed at OKW. It was the first good nights sleep I've had at WDW. I have a terrible back and the soft beds make me toss and turn and hurt all night long.

Think about it this way....they can't make soft beds hard but they can put things on top of a hard bed to make it feel softer.

We were in building 13...first floor, I think like 1310 or something?

But these weren't firm beds.

They were vacation-wrecking beds. Like sleeping on a sheet of steel. I slept in the other room when we didn't have guests, and then on the sleeper sofa.

OKW is my favorite, but if the beds are going to be this kind of disaster, I have to rethink.

Yep, ours were rock-hard as well. We were in the King Bdrm of #2631 a couple of weeks ago...

I find it really funny when people say this 'cuz it's absolutely not true. I have a bad back too and we used to have a pretty firm mattress and I hurt SO bad. I couldn't stand up in the mornings. I could barely get out of bed. So I literally started sleeping sitting up with about 3 big fluffy pillows behind me keeping me propped up. I slept like that for 2 years. We finally decided to try a Select Comfort bed so that we could each have our own setting. At first, I hated it bcuz I kept trying to make it firmer and firmer just bcuz that's what everybody always says. The more firm I made it the worse I felt - practically to the point of tears. After a couple of weeks of that I started over again with it and started making it softer. The softer I went the better I felt. I finally settled on about 25 or 30 as my sleep number - which is SINK IN TO THE BOTTOM soft!!!!! Now I'm in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE with my Select Comfort bed. DH has his own setting which is firmer but not rock hard and he stopped tossing and turning (he used to pull the fitted sheets off he tossed so much). We both sleep like babies now and we've had it for about 4 years I guess.

My parents finally got a sleep number bed last year too. My Dad used to sleep on the floor 'cuz he thought he needed the firmness!! Know what? He also now uses about a 30 to sleep!! The thing about the Select Comfort beds tho is that the air moves around and supports your individual contours. This is very different than simply laying on a really soft mattress. But I'm just saying that firmer is not always the answer. When we go somewhere with a really super firm rock hard mattress I often snag every available spare pillow and sleep propped up.:sad2:

We've never had a problem with the beds (except for the pull out bed, of course), but our mattress here at home is crap, so that's probably why.

I did love the beds the one time we stayed at SSR. That was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in.

That's just the way I like the beds. Like sleeping on the floor but with better support. ;)

If I can have 1 resort with a 'good for me' bed then I'm thrilled. I don't think the bed makes the vacation but that's probably just me since I'm normally in pain from hotel beds and I just expect and plan for that.

I really think since the hard beds are available that you should be able to just choose which kind you want/need when you make your reservation. That way maintenance can switch them out as requested. Most people won't make the request so it's not like it would be a ton of extra work, yk?

I'd be OK if they'd just provide some decent kind of foam topper for the hard beds. The egg crates made it bearable but not comfortable.

My experience exactly! Our bed was past firm it was rock hard, like sleeping on a steel slab. Dh said it was hard but bearable so I doubled up the egg crate on my side and it was slightly better, but nothing I would want to spend more than 1 night on.

We Stayed at OKW for our first time in November. We liked the resort, but will not stay there again until they replace the beds. We were given egg crates after complaining, They were very thin, and kind of a joke. I imagine that these beds are fairly old. I know all of the beds purchased over the last several years are softer. (SSR and AKL for example have very comfortable beds). I imagine we will soon see these beds replaced one by one. I am sure they hear alot of complaints.

Hmmm...I think I see a memory foam mattress topper and an Owner's Locker in my future! lol :rotfl:(Would one of those fit in the OL?)

This thread has made me very nervous. We're staying at OKW on the 24th-27th and my DiL who will be 7 months pregnant will be with us. (We will each have a studio.) I am so afraid that she will be uncomfortable and unable to sleep. I think I'll call Member Services on Monday and put in some kind of a request for rooms with beds that aren't real hard. Right now our reservation is requesting the Turtle Pond Road area. Does anyone know of any parts of OKW that might have newer, more comfortable beds?

I found them hard as rocks, and I didn't find SSR much better as of late. Now I'm just getting a egg crate mattress cover when I go... I don't know how anyone can sleep on those things
