OKW attractive home resort due to lower points

Excellent point. I don't need to own at OKW in order to book a 1-BR at the 7-mo mark. I can still take advantage of the point-saving large rooms at OKW without having to own there.

Mike, do you think that will continue to be the case? It is a large resort. but with the new expiration date and the inherent value at OKW along with the fact that it has a great feel, is it possible that pickings will become slim at the 7 month window?

I doubt it. Except for Grand Villas. It certainly has its fans, but its popularity seems to be well matched to its size - and while plenty of people LOVE this resort, there are many people who prefer the hotel feel, or the location of the Epcot resorts, or don't want to risk not having an elevator, or want a studio with a couch instead of two beds, or whatever. The extra years won't have anything to do with more people wanting to book it THIS year.

Slightly, but that will depend a lot on what Disney does.

OKW resales were going for significantly less than BWV/BCV/VWL (especially BCV) resale with the same expiration date. This may serve to make them sell for a similar amount and allow them to hold up the price on ROFR.

(I'm not sure what Disney was selling OKW for)

They are now sselling it for $96 per point with the 2057 expiration date. Better point values and larger accomodations. I am just saying that while it doesn't have the location that BWV and BCV have, it is still pretty close to everything, a truly beautiful resort, and a agood value. If I were adding on at a second resort, I would have to consider it.

We bought SSR in 2004, stayed at OKW and loved the room size. If you have large partys OKW is the best and I would stay even if the points were the same as any other resort. I don't think OKW is out of the way and enjoy the resort a lot. We do stay at BWV a lot also and love the BEView.

I was told by our guide that we could not purchase a new DVC membership at OKW with the 2057 expiration date. He stated that the extended date was only being offered to current OKW owners so we would have to buy OKW with the original expiration date then opt for the extension. Did he misinform me?:confused3

That is a good question. The information that I stated I pretty much got here on the boards. I am not presently looking to add on points, so I have not asked my guide. I do think that i read that someone did purchase a new contract at OKW, but that they really had to insist with their guide. Maybe someone else can chime in with more definitive information.

We have not bought DVC yet. When I talked to our guide, I told him we were only interested in OKW. He pointed out that the points had the additional 15 years and used that as a selling point to encourage us to purchase. OKW was $96 a point, if I remember correctly.

Yes.

So how should I approach my guide with this information? When he told us we couldn't get OKW with the extended contracted, we opted for SSR. We just mailed the 10% down payment over the weekend, so we haven't received or signed anything yet. Is it too late to change our mind? Should I contact him and insist on OKW? SSR is a lovely resort and I don't think we would be disappointed with it, but DH really loves OKW for it's room sizes and layout and for the overall theming.
If we stick with SSR, what times of the year are best/easiest for booking OKW at the 7-month mark?

The low points were definitely a selling point for me.

OKW, like every DVC resort, has things that some people like and things that they don't.

OKW Advantages (my personal opinion)
  • Offers the largest rooms of all DVC resorts! Feels like home
  • Quiet, relaxed, lushly landscaped setting
  • Point-saving rooms (including GV)
  • Has very convenient self parking directly in front of units
[*]Boat service and walkway to DTD
[*]Most rooms have good views: golf course, water/canal, woods
[*]Four swimming pools and a Community Hall
OKW Disadvantages (my personal opinion)

  • Large, very spread out resort (distance of rooms from dining and services)
[*]Condo/townhouse style setup doesn't appeal to me
  • Oldest DVC resort (sometimes it's age shows)
  • Limited onsite dining (Olivia’s café)
  • No room service (just pizza delivery)
  • Outdoor hallways
  • Most buildings lack an elevator

There's a walkway to DTD from OKW? That would be cool. I'm looking at purchasing DVC at SSR. However, from everything we have read, I see that our DVC resort of choice is probably going to be OKW for many of the reasons that you state are the disadvantages. We love POR and will miss it but think that OKW will be a good replacement. The more we look at SSR, we think we will really enjoy that resort as well. We like being close to DTD and being able to take the boats.
