I hate it when people either use words that they don't know what it means, or walk around going 'OMG I SPELL EVERYTHING RIGHT' and then the next day they're spelling things really wrong.

Lately my friend as been using the word posterity a lot, but she has no idea how to use it, and has been using it so out of context I'd like to tell her she's wrong...
But yeah, she thinks she's so much smarter than everyone when it comes to the knowledge of words that it'd be a complete waste of time.

She also has a tendency to say something else that means like the complete opposite of what she's saying...

So are there any words that people are constantly misusing that drives you insane?
Or am I just a freak? ;]

your not a freak, one of the kids in my school keeps using the word distraught in the completely opposite way its supposed to be used, and when someone else has a little typo or error in one of their emails they rub it in and brag about how they would never make that kind of mistake. its stupid

Haha, that pisses me off so much. They try and sound so smart and pretentious but just end up sounding like an idiot.

My friend wrote in a poem:

why in war do we condemn murder?
(she meant to say something along the lines of why do we think it'd right)

It annoys me too.

Though i will admit that i can't spell remembered or embaressed for my life. I've been tring since 2nd grade.

i have this friend who thinks he is so smart and articulate and all that jazz...well the other day we were out for dinner with some friends and what he meant to say was 'debonair' but he said 'debutante'

i had a silent laugh to myself about that one. :rolleyes1

yah, my brother did that the other day, he was saying something but was using the word "fond" wayy out of context. It was wicked funny. haha. But it was still annoying.

Some commonly misused ones are "obnoxious" and "oxymoron."

I tried to teach my friends what "oxymoron" meant, and... they don't get it.
There's a lot more, but I can't think of them right now.

You're NOT a freak it happens to me as well, and I always correct them...unless it's a stupid little spelling mistake because we ALL make those once and a while. But if they use a word incorrectly I'll tell them because it does bother me.

I remembered.

She always says historical when she means hysterical.
It's really annoying, I never correct her because I'm under the impression that she doesn't even know it's a different word. I think she may thinks that's how you say hysterical?
It's really annoying though, because those two words don't even mean close to the same thing.
