Okay - who wants to help me?

Just wanted to join the "Go For It" crowd...we've talked about this before I am fascinated with the Amish also, I have no good ideas for you but just wanted to encourage your project

When you scroll down, there are lots of Amish sources of information. I think you will enjoy reading these.

Years ago when I was a teen I had a pen pal who was an Amish teen who left the order to become a Mennonite because he wanted to go to college. His name is Sherman Yoder. He still called himself an Amishman, though. I looked for his page but it's not there anymore. If i can find his old address maybe he still lives there in the Indiana community and he may be up to communicating with you. He loved talking about his Amish family. I'll try to get his information in case you're interested.

Thank you so much for that link! It will be very helpful in my research..

That would be a dream come true if you could locate your former friend - Sherman Yoder!! I've wondered if there was any way that I could become pen pals with someone who is currently Amish, but I'm not sure if that's allowed.. I know they're big on writing letters - and I've been pen palling since 1966 with a number of women all across the country - some for over 30 years.. There is one woman who has a friend who is Amish and was going to approach this person with the suggestion, but unfortunately my friend (the pen pal) is quite ill now and housebound for awhile..:(

Any and all help - even links - are greatly appreciated..

And again, thank you so much! :goodvibes

aww....goes without say the feeling is VERY mutual

Finished all my notes on "House Calls & Hitching Posts" (a doctor in Ohio that spent over 36 years treating Amish families and delivering their babies - Dr. Elton Lehman - as told to Dorcas Sharp Hoover).. That was such an interesting book - and I learned a lot more when I read it for the second time and marked off the info that I wanted to copy over.. This would be a great book for anyone to read who is interested in a doctors experiences with the Amish (mostly Swartzentruber in that area)..:thumbsup2

Now I'm starting on "The Amish School".. This is written by a former Amish school teacher from Lancaster, PA - in conjunction with a Mennonite woman who has done a vast amount of research on "plain people".. It's not a terribly thick book, so it shouldn't take me too long to go through and pencil off what I want to copy over..

I noticed something today that might have an impact on how I do this project - paper/file system or digital.. I noticed that when I write things down, I remember them much easier than if I type them.. Hmmm..

Oh - and to the person that mentioned the flat bed scanner.. Yes - I have one - that is also a copier and printer.. Some of these books have photos that I would like to include in the various sections, so I'm sure the scanner/copier will come in handy..:thumbsup2 (But there goes my "budget" when I start having to buy ink cartridges one after another..) It's worth it though.. Guess it really doesn't matter "which" hobby I'm spending money on at any given time - right? :goodvibes

I ran into the sweetest lady at the library yesterday and we started talking about the different books we like to read. She loves the same kind of books. She also had Glenn Becks latest book in her hand and that started off a whole other conversation. What a nice woman. Thinking about you and realizing I need some kind of "system" to remember which books I had read. I asked her how she keeps track. She said "come here let me show you something". So we proceeded to the section with Kim Vogel Sawyer. She grabs a book of the shelf and opens it to the back cover. There I see the tiniest little circle with a line in it. She winks at me and says" Of course I have the librarians' permission when I read a book I put this here so I know I read it" I had to really swallow my laughter..it is the library afterall.

When I left in addition to my own 8 selections I had Glenn Becks' book in my pile which she insisted I check out first and I had a new friend to meet every 2 weeks. She most be about about 80 and I smile when I think of her homemade system...thought you'd get a kick out of this.
