When I walked into my apartment this morning, I smelled something burning but thought that it was the heat so didn't investigate further (Thom's and my heat used to do this.) A few minutes ago, one of my roommates knocked on my door to ask if I had been cooking anything. I said no and she led me into the kitchen. We saw a pot that was completely black on the bottom with burned eggshell sitting in it. There was also egg all over the kitchen as if an egg had exploded. She said the oven had also been up all the way on high with nothing in it. Really, really strange!

Hi Honeywolf-

You don't know me but when you weren't looking, I snuck over and did it...I'm a very bad girl.;)

That is really very wierd. I hope everything cleans up well...egg is pretty gross.

You're very lucky it didn't catch the apartment on fire. Even if I'd had that odor before, I would have investigated it to be safe. Not to be mean, but not investigating what it was was foolish.

I would've called the police (you still can) and have them make a written report.

Not only do you have a possible arson on your hands, but a breaking and entering as well.

Try not to touch anything until they get there. There could be fingerprints that they might want to brush for.

At least the police will have a file if something should happen in your apt. again.

Someone breaks into an apartment to cook an egg??? I don't think so. Sounds like a careless roomate (or friend of a roomate) to me.

I'd have to assume SilverLily's right -- someone in your apartment isn't fessing up to something. Don't call the cops -- let them worry about important stuff, please.

I'm sure it WAS one of my roommates....I can't believe they did it, though.

She does seem to be a bit of an airhead ;) Yep, I just asked one of my other roommates and it was the same person who did that. She finally admitted it while I was off taking my Anthropology test.

I would wonder about living with someone who leaves stuff to burn on the stove.
That is a major fire risk.

It does worry me....so here's my question, should I call my landlord and let him know what happened? I can't get out of my lease but I also don't want to live with someone who's this much of an airhead and end up dying or losing my stuff because of something stupid that she did.

What lease?? I thought your roommates' names were on the lease and they were letting you stay there?

No, I'm on the lease too. I found an apartment where I pay $350 a month and I'm on the lease.

have you considered renters insurance? it may be a good idea.

I second worm's idea for renter's insurance. It doesn't cost that much to cover your stuff. As far as telling the landlord, I think you should. That is pretty irresponsible of that roommate. She could have burned the whole place down!

and please make sure you have battery operated smoke alarms with fresh batteries in them and not the worthless electrical ones!
