Okay that’s cold

Western PA and everyone is out on their bicycles and motorcycles. It was 50° in February yesterday!

And I'm wondering what your actual temperature is. I've experienced "global warming" with -33 F actual temps a few years ago. It was morning however so it was very calm.

I can’t even fathom that level of cold. Last year in Texas it hit single digits in F and that was cold and everything was shut down for a week cause of snow.
It was 85 yesterday and today the same, but another cold front is coming so lows in the 30s again.

We had 20s/30s this last weekend and people were outside biking, boating on the river (near the ice fishermen...so weird), we saw a convertible on our drive, and I know I opened my windows to air the house out..

Where does it get this cold? Are you all way up in Canada? Brrrr just thinking about those temps

I am in Grand Forks, ND The current windchill this morning is -45F

We don’t have a generator. We live in a hundred year old house but don’t worry about the pipes or anything freezing. We’ve never lost power since we’ve lived here even on days I thought we would when you could see the power lines whipping in the wind. We’ve talked about it but who knows if we will ever get one.

Our actual temp right now is -17. On Thursday, the high is supposed to be -27F so we haven’t even reached the bad part of the week yet (weather wise)

Yes, "all the way up", but not near so far up as Canada goes right to the tippity-top.

I'm in Calgary which is in the Rocky Mountains about 1,000 miles due north of Salt Lake City. CdnCarrie is in Winnipeg which is a few hundred miles north of Grand Forks, ND. LisaViolet is in Toronto, which is much further south and across Lake Ontario from Buffalo, NY.

What am I, chopped liver? lol

Our temp right now is -31C and with windchill -40C so -23.8F and with windchill -40F

Come on down here - it's rainy, but warm:

Stay warm, folks!

no we don’t own a generator, never needed one.

Please know I know that you have never needed a generator - that was obvious to me. Was simply curious.

And secondly I actually asked for a very strange reason. Annette and I have this running joke about this UK psychic who did not know Doug Ford, but thought he would be Prime Minister one day. This happened a couple of years ago. At the very same time he mentioned that he saw issues around Winnipeg. They were crazy detailed. He mentioned a grid failure, that was prolonged, that caused chaos due to a deep freeze.

Yes he is a psychic. So insert eye roll and a laugh - we do as well. And Dearest Dougie is not PM.

But grids have failed.

I am in Canada and it is forecasted to reach 50 today.

(Not that we do not have cold temperatures - we do, but never THAT cold brrr, just highlighting differences in location.)

We’ll let’s hope those predictions do not come true! All of them….

And this prediction was even before O'Toole. So we were well that closes the door on that very strange prediction, I mean he won't be gone for ages.

Actually now I think about it there was a winter (last year?) where there were a large number of homes without power. I wasn't one of them and not one I knew was without power. Or was that after a thunderstorm. It was fairly recent - couple years ago.

Googled it and it was Oct 2019 - and it was more Portage la Prairie but some Winnipeg. And it was due to a storm.

On January 30, 2019, the AIR temperature here (near Chicago) was -35 degrees F. The WIND CHILL was -55 degrees F.

The best thing we found to do was to take an oscillating heater and aim it at our front door. That really helped a lot!

For only the 2nd time in my then almost-30-year career, we closed the offices.

If you want to brave the outdoors for a minute or so, you can take a cup of boiling hot water, throw the water in the air, and watch it instantly turn into a cloud.
(IMPORTANT: Make SURE you are upwind of the boiling hot water, or else it could blow back onto your face.)

Nothing is closed here. Maybe some rural schools. Nothing in the city.

Current temperature is -18 which is manageable for us. It's the wind chill which makes it now -39. So it has warmed up from this morning. And it's sunny and the snow is very sparkly.

Tomorrow too. (in F)
Sunny. Wind up to 15 km/h. High minus 20. Wind chill minus 44 in the morning and minus 27 in the afternoon. Frostbite in minutes

I’m in the same city at the OP. I’m actually amazed at how fast hydro is restored when there is an outage. We have had a few power outages but never in the middle of winter. We have a generator that we have never used. The longest outage we’ve had was twelve hours in April one year. It did get cold in the house, and we went out for dinner. DH didn’t power up the generator as we didn’t think it would be out that long. It was due to a pole fire on our street.

Hydro workers in the extreme cold do not get enough credit. They are freaking heros.

Although we are having similar temperatures to you today, let it be known some of us are out on our bicycles in snow, ice and below freezing. ;)
Not in shorts and t-shirts you're not :rotfl2:

Yeah, I was "displaced" for 2 years paying for the lawyer. I had a place to sleep and that was it so I spent all 2 years on the bicycle or sitting out at the lake in the car. I was riding at 18° if there wasn't any snow on the roads (I don't have a fat tire bike.) I'm also in western PA, so it's all up and down hills. You start sweating climbing, then you're soaking wet and blasting down the hills hard on the brakes at 30 mph.

My buddy came up with the idea of riding from Connellsville to Rockford and back over a weekend when it was in the 20's. I couldn't believe it as he complains of getting cold when we hit shade on a 90° day, LOL.
