Okay...so, humor me...please??!!!

I first looked at DVC when BCV was first being sold. I passed on it then. I looked again a couple years later; again I passed on it. SSR opened up, I bought some points. Suppose you have never been to Hawaii or Timbuktu, can you state a preference for where you'd rather go? I would say yes, you can state a preference without staying at the resort. There is a difference between preferences where you would like to go versus preferences of places that you have been .

OK OK I repent for my foolish comment.

I guess my husband and I are the only people on these boards who formed an opinion about a resort and then realized that we needed to give it a try, and that we actually loved it. Sorry....

This poll is great and at least gives some validity to the buy where you want to stay theory. Can I vote again? :thumbsup2

No!!!

I did exactly the same thing....I told you, I totally "ate my words" on BCV (but, I still would've ranked it high just because of location...but, definitely not my favorite...who knew I'd go so nuts over that place?!!)

Okay....STOP MAKING MUUSHKA FEEL BAD!!! :grouphug:

Well, there have only been two posts today, so my guess is that this poll has "run its course"...which is actually really good for me because I leave for WDW early Friday morning. However, in the interest of including everyone, I have re-done the stats.

I hope this poll has been as informative for all of you as it has for me. I would like to thank everyone for keeping this thread non-controversial while I was tallying, and allowing it to continue.

At this point, I would love to hear EVERYONE'S interpretation of what the numbers mean. If you don't want to see others' interpretations...I totally understand and respect that...but, please don't discourage others from posting. We do a lot "discussing" on the boards about "buy where you want to stay" vs. not, the importance of the 7 month window, and where people are booking & what resort/resort style people prefer. However, we have never had even an "inkling" of stats other than our "gut feelings" based on what happens when we call MS, or read posts here. I know these answers are based on what people say, not what people book...but, I seriously don't know if there is a way to get more accurate. So, maybe in the big picture, these stats mean nothing...but, I had to try.

I will ask that people be "respectful" of others as they post, but also remind everyone not to take posts on the dis too seriously....this is not "work"...this is fun!!! (or, at least...it is supposed to be). And, I am hoping for some serious insights on interpretation.

So, here's the new information:

Total votes: 130

Here's the results:

1) BCV with 445 points (22.82% of available points)
2) BWV with 417 points (21.38% of available points)
3) OKW with 379 points (19.44% of available points)
4) VWL with 375.5 points (19.26% of available points)
5) SSR with 329.5 points (16.9% of available points)

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their first choice:

1) BCV - 35 people (26.92%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms
2) BWV -29 people (22.31%) for a resort that is 21.16% of the available rooms
3) OKW - 25 people (19.23%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms
4) SSR - 25 people (19.23%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
5) VWL - 16 people (12.31%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms

Now, if we look at the percentage of people listing each resort as their least favorite/last choice:

1) SSR - 50 people (38.46%) for a resort that is 30.5% of the available rooms
2) OKW -24 people (18.46%) for a resort that is 29.33% of the available rooms
3) BWV - 23 people (17.69%) for a resort that is 21.16% of the available rooms
4) VWL - 19 people (14.62%) for a resort that is 7.51% of the available rooms
5) BCV - 12 people (9.23%) for a resort that is 11.49% of the available rooms

I will not be available to see the "discourse" on this (or any other thread) because I am leaving for WDW   ...but, I look fwd to seeing this when I get back...and, I am warning you....I don't want to see a "CLOSED" thread (but, fading away quietly into oblivion would be okay).

So, before I go...here's my thoughts on the "numbers".

1) I am surprised at how BCV stayed at the top of the pack consistently. I knew it was popular, but I expected to see all the resorts "shift" during the thread. This is especially true since BCV seems to take more "beatings" than VWL or BWV.

2) I am also surprised that, as the number of posters grew, the points did not change too much (I guess what they say in stats is pretty true). Once every resort "settled" it didn't change too much. I think this gives validity to the poll, and I wouldn't expect to see the numbers change too much even if there were a lot more posters.

3) I don't know that the "buy where you want to stay" policy is one that holds true for every resort. Based on the numbers above,BCV and VWL are "over popular" for their size. BWV is about right for its size, and OKW and SSR are "under popular" for their size. While this reinforces my idea that no resort should be too big (one resort cannot appeal to tons of people), I am inclined to believe that booking inside the 7 month window might not be too difficult at these resorts. IMO, the best policy might be, "If you will mainly want to stay at BCV or VWL, buy where you want to stay. If you want to stay mainly at OKW or SSR, you might want to buy SSR for the extra 12 years." BWV is a "special case" because of the BW and std view rooms...if you want to stay in those rooms, you will need to buy where you want to stay.

I think for me, the poll re-emphasized that I need to view my DVC as something that is for "long-term" planning. I will also consider myself VERY lucky to get into VWL when I do. If I didn't have a weird obsession with BCV...I would seriously consider adding-on there.

In the end, I really don't think the concern should be "how popular" or "unpopular" a resort is...but, rather how popular that resort is in relation to its size. BCV is the first choice for 25% of the posters....if that number was speaking about SSR, OKW or BWV...there would be no problem...that number, while being a little low for SSR, would be almost perfect for OKW or BWV...but, that particular number can (and is) causing trouble for BCV, and would disasterous for VWL.

Just my thoughts, and I hope I didn't offend anyone.....I would love to hear yours!!!

Beca

Thanx for all your hard work, Beca. :)

Here are a couple of my thoughts on the numbers:

1) There can be many different components to a favorite resort. Some people like restaurant choices, some like pools, some like an Epcot location, and others like theming. Some take all these factors into consideration, but put more emphasis on certain ones.
For exmaple: Someone could love the restaurants and theming at VWL, and dislike the restaurants and theming at BWV. Because an Epcot location is of paramount importance for that person, both BWV and BCV may come out ahead of VWL.

2) I know it's nearly impossible to say for certain, but I would bet there is some home team voting going on. The larger the resort, the higher the likelyhood of top votes.
Now, you could say everyone bought their favorite resort, but in reality that doesn't always happen. I would bet what does happen, is folks buy then acquire an emotional attachment to the resort.
You can somewhat normalize this by looking at your percentage of rooms available, and extrapolate from there.

3) I think BWV and BCV have a small advantage simply from their high traffic location (different than Epcot location).
I mean, how often do Members go to visit the Iron Spike Room? How many Members have heard the haunting music, or even know that Walt's small train is on display there?

Anyway, very nice job!
After proof reading my comments it appears that I'm making excuses for my beloved VWL. That's really not the case. It honestly doesn't bother me if others don't care for my resort as much as other resorts.

I will say two more things-

-- As I said after my vote, VWL may not appeal to the masses, but those of us who love it, have an extremely strong passion for it. I believe stronger than most other Members have for their #1 resort.

-- Just because I had to rate resorts in the 4 and 5 position, doesn't mean I dislike them. I do like all the resorts for different reasons and would be thrilled to stay in any of them.

Thanx again for the interesting poll! :smokin:

I'm with you JenD! I wouldn't consider any of them bad! I want to stay at all of them, and not be tied down to any one! I would be ever so happy to be "stuck" at any of the DVC resorts! :woohoo:
It really would depend on where we planning on hanging out while we are there. Sometimes, it is more Epcot & MGM and other times more MK & AK! We always split our stay when we go to WDW, but that might change down the road.
Here goes......

#1 BWV (This one's for you B3! :rotfl: Love the scary clown slide! :teeth: )
#2 SSR Love the decor and I'm dying to try that spa!
#3 OKW Love it! Don't really know why, just do! Maybe it's the no valet or
room service! :rotfl: Just kidding!
#4 BCV SAB is pretty fun! ;)
#5 VWL Too much like my home state, but it is very well done! :goodvibes

Like I said before, I don't think there is a bad one in the bunch!

here was a total of 130 votes out of 85,000 members! This is just the opinion of dis board readers. Doesn't represent the other 84,870 members. But most will see what they want to see!

Thanks for your effort and time putting this together!

Have a Great Trip!! :wave2:

Thanks Beca

I agree with the two comments above.

I'm not surprised by the results, I think any DVC resort linked to a deluxe hotel will always come out ahead of the standalone DVC resorts because they have more to offer (wow factor from the themed hotels, more activities, more onsite dining options, hotel services, etc). Plus BCV and BWV have the extra bonus of location.

Personally, SSR is my first preference. I'll always stay at SSR. However, when I'm traveling with guests to Disney, I plan to split my time at SRR and one of the DVC resorts linked to a deluxe hotel because they offer a different Disney experience in my opinion.

Thanks again !!

Great poll. I've been reading the comments and agree that all the DVC resorts are wonderful just different. We try to stay at different resorts each stay in our effort to be well rounded or just try something different.

Our next trip is in October to Disneyland which I haven't been to for 6 years. We'll see what the Disneyland Resort have to offer compared to the DVC.

Beca, I think you would get more responses if you were to change your Post subject title so that folks at a glance could see you are taking a poll for this purpose. I almost did not click on it with the current subject heading -- I only did so because I usually like reading your posts.

You're not alone Muushka! DH and I toured WL once (before we were DVC owners) and while we thought it was impressive, we didn't think we would ever want to stay there. We tried VWL in January and loved it so much we added on there!

However, I still think it's OK to vote based on your impressions of a resort, provided you have done your homework (toured there or looked at photos on the web and read some reviews). I think what Beca's poll captures is where people feel they will want to use their points, even if they haven't stayed there yet. That tells us something about the projected demand for each resort.

I took the poll in this spirit: If I called MS to make a reservation, which resort would be my first choice? If it was not available, which would be my second choice? Third choice? and so on. I haven't stayed in all of them and my opinions may change once I do, but as of today, I know the order in which I would check availability for my vacation dates.

Okay, I'm going to vote. Hope they get counted.

#1 - vwl

#2 - okw

#3 - ssr

#4 - bcv

#5 - bwv

DH and I just love vwl. The only one we haven't stayed at is bwv. One of the many things I love about DVC is the variety. Something for everyone.

Thanks for the poll and effort in to tabulating it.

Have a great time on our trip.

OK, who are you REALLY? Is this DH disguised as a Rhode Island resident?

Beca, have a great trip and I think everyone here would agree that you deserve lots of gelato and a sundae from B&C to get your strength back after all the hard work you did here. Thanks!

I haven't stayed at all of them either. Like a previous poster, just listing the order I would book if my preferences were not available:

BWV
BCV
VWL
OKW
SSR
