We were at DHS on Saturday (11/9) and after enjoying all our FP+ there by 12:30, opted to go over to Epcot as there were still a few F&W booths we wanted to check out.

Bad idea. I should have known something was up when we were parked in the furthest lot from the park and it was only 1PM. Then I noticed much of the parking lot was taken over by tents, fences, booths and just plain roped off, I'd say at least 40 if not 50% of the lot was all fenced off.

Oh, then I realized, it was the half-marathon, 5K and 10K weekend and apparently the EPCOT lot is used to start/finish the races. The races for Saturday had long since completed, but everything was still set up for the half-marathon on Sunday.

And, the park, the park was mobbed. No wonder I couldn't get a late FP+ for pretty much anything. Lines for the food booths were 20-30 people deep. In some places, you could hardly walk. We ate at the Canada booth (wow on the beer cheese soup and the steak, but a bit expensive for the very small servings) and then decided to quickly say, well, too crowded for us and to come back another day as we are passholders so we can pretty much visit anytime we want).

Leaving at 3, the traffic to get into Epcot was now backed up all the way to the ticket booth and hardly moving. I have no idea where they were parking anyone as it appeared the entire lot was over filled.

BTW: In Living Color was the Eat to the Beat band and at 2PM, there were plenty of Passholder passes to all three shows available.

So, unless you are a runner, avoid Epcot on race weekends.

DHS crowed was average. And TOT was back at full capacity.

Oh no, I have our schedule and ADR's for Epcot on the Sunday of the half marathon weekend in April 2018. :guilty: So far I've gotten lots of conflicting reports as to the crowds that day, and even the crowd predictors don't seem to be expecting many, but I'm still skeptical. Your experience makes me wonder if I should switch my ADR's to another day now before it may be too late.

Are all the half marathons the same route and schedule? The April schedule shows the race ending near the sports complex I think, so no where near Epcot, which made me hope we were safe.

The Star Wars race (The April event) begins at Epcot and ends at ESPN (or has in the past). There's been construction at ESPN and it's possible that's changing things up this year
It doesn't really impact the crowds at Epcot. Really, the races don't much. F&W is what really impacts the crowds. Bad.

Ok, it sounds like F&W was the major factor here then.

No, they aren’t. The SW Dark Side does not end at Epcot.

DHS will be the park to avoid after the Dark Side runs. Runners will be wearing their medals and in the park having photos taken with characters.

Thanks, that makes sense with HS being the park for all things SW.

I feel better now. :-)

As others have noted, it was F&W combined with a Saturday that brought the crowds to Epcot. That's always a bad idea. Marathons in and of themselves impact crowds very little. There may be a little inconvenience with some roadways temporarily blocked off for the runners, and their route takes them through various parks which again is a temporary inconvenience. I was at the January marathon with my daughter to watch a friend of hers run, and we had little trouble with crowds. The runners start super early in the morning, well before parks open. Many will be still going during morning park hours. The January marathon finished just outside Epcot, with the runners making a circuit of World Showcase and then on to the parking lot. The CM's were very good about keeping spectators behind ropes and guiding guests through various open spots so as not to interfere with runners. The whole thing was pretty much wrapped up by noon. Everything depends on the route the runners take and which parks they go through and which one they end in. It's easy to get that information, so you can plan accordingly.

Star Wars Dark Side this April (2017) ended at Epcot and began at Magic Kingdom Parking, identical to F&W Half yesterday (with the exception of the course within AK which was modified to go through Pandora yesterday). The course for 2018 won't be revealed until February(ish) though all half's over the past 2 years have ended in Epcot parking lot. I don't see anything changing as they are doing construction at WWoS and HS parking/entrances and Epcot has the most room to stage these. That being said, @AngiTN is right - F&W draws all the crowds on the weekends, and it is not really race related, especially since all half marathoners had a private party at Epcot last night with access to F&W booths and select rides from 10 -1. Hiro is correct that many runners will head to HS after the races for medal photos in April.

Can't remember why I thought so, but I had it in my head that the last race ended at the sports complex. I see the 2017 maps show it ended at Epcot though, like you said. I have an alternative schedule planned as back-up, so maybe I'll be prepared to use that instead. So glad I have this site for info! I appreciate everyone in this thread as well as the OP for sharing their experiences.

The inaugural year did begin at Epcot and end over at WWoS but I think they must have changed things up last year. We were scheduled to run but I had a foot issue and had to bow out last minute

I agree, it was likely more of the F&W impacting the crowds, but the race definitely impacted parking. With 50% less capacity they were running out of spaces, which slowed down the ability to get into the park. Up til now, we've only done F&W on the week nights and the crowds were pretty manageable. Never again on the weekend. Damn, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is next weekend. At least the parking lot will be back to normal then!

I will be starting my week long vacation the Saturday of the Star wars marathon weekend in April...I knew to avoid HS that weekend (hopefully I'm safe going there on Wednesday instead, lol) but my first Epcot Day will be that Monday...would extra crowds there be expected that day? Flower & Garden is during this time as well. We will be going to MK the day of the race on Sunday (4/22)- ...Anyone know if that will be a safe choice for that day?

I'm curious as well

Flower & Garden doesn't affect Epcot crowds too much, except, as noted, on weekends. The locals seem to flock to F&G on the weekends, especially Friday and Saturday nights, and the World Showcase area can be very crowded and chaotic at those times. We've been to Epcot frequently during F&G and always go on the weekdays to do lunch from the various kiosks, when lines are very short.

It was a perfect storm between Race Weekend, Local APs visiting Food and Wine and + the weekend leading into Jersey Week

F&G is waaayyy less popular than F&W among us locals. What I mean by that is with F&W you have locals without AP's buying one day passes for F&W. You don't see that as much with F&G

Good to know about F&G. While one of my days at Epcot is a Monday, the other is a Friday so I will have to brace myself for the chaos of Friday night still I'm sure, lol
