For a couple of years, I've been getting random white/silver hair that I just pull out. It seems I've been getting more lately...

How long does it take for the entire head to go gray? At what point do you stop pulling and start coloring?

I'm turning 30 this year, btw.

(I don't color my hair at all right now and I'm trying to avoid it until I can't anymore!)

How did you handle it?

Clairol Nice and Easy #87. Been using it for years. I was too depressed to have my hair which had always been strawberry blond, suddenly go brown on me. I'd never stop using it.

I had grey at 15 years old, I've been colouring my hair every 6 weeks since and that's a long LONG time!

My DD has had a few greys at 14 years old, it runs in my family, my Dad was completely white by 40.

My preference is Preference. Just remember, once you start dying your hair, there is probably no going back.

I am having a major silver outbreak myself. In the past few years I've had one or two here or there but I had my hair pulled up recently and someone else commented on it. I've colored my hair for a while and I do not plan to go silver gracefully yet, not my a long shot.

I guess if nothing else, I know I'll have pretty curly silver hair:sad2:

Get yourself a pigmented shampoo. Sexy Hair Concepts makes them, Goldwell makes them (both can be found at ULTA or: )

What color is your hair?

Anyways - the Goldwell is nice. Ive seen it completely cover grey and brighten people's natural hair.

Or - you could go with a 'gold' to then make it appear as highlights on your hair.

I cant stress pigmented shampoo and conditioners enough. Used daily until you reach the color you want - and then once every 3 - 4 days, it maintains that color. And simply deposits color on your whole head, making the gray fade/blend in.

If you decide to just color it - no over the coutner / drugstore stuff. You know how we talked about dog food quality, and the difference between grocery store, and 'good brands'? Same rings true for hair products - TRULY. Find a salon that uses Shades EQ - by Redken. No lift, deposit only. So you can also blend in (but Shades EQ works even BETTER with the pigmented shampoo!)

So - salon products ONLY. Theyre worth the little bit more youll spend.

I had permed hair when the gray started for me, so I could camoflauge it! I now have my stylist color my roots every 4 weeks.

My oldest sister has her hair highlighted - that's another way to hide the gray.

I just read some other posts....

Hate to disagree but do NOT start drugstore coloring your hair.

There's a reason I did corrective coloring at the salon, because you'll ALWAYS have people coming in, post-drug store dye, and its amaaaazing money because of it.

The stuff in stores in garbage. You'd be better off going to Sally's and getting the correct color, with the correct Volume peroxide. Store stuff is bad bad, very bad.

Why is it men look so good when they go gray/silver and women just look old:confused3 :guilty:

I've been dyeing my own hair for over 25 years. Stylists always comment about how great my hair is.

Do pigmented shampoos have henna in them? Just wondering.

CathrynRose is SO right! I started the cheap route... drugstore stuff. My SIL is a stylist and told me to come to her to do it right. I couldn't figure out why if I was buying blond shades, my hair looked strawberry blech when my normal shade is light brown.

I finally went to her and now I've gone back to a darker shade with blond highlights to help hide the skunk stripe that grows in. I go about 6 weeks between visits and I could probably stretch it to 8 if I really had to do that.

Number 1, I have blond in my hair now. Number 2, my hair doesn't feel like straw. Number 3, my hair doesn't look like straw.

My SIL and CathrynRose are both right about professional color.

I do not believe so. Some may - but the 2 I mentioned I do not believe they do.

Here's the Sexy Hair Concepts (I really like this one)

Im actually REALLY enjoying women's grey lately, simply because ash blonde highlight are so 'in' right now.

So, there's a 55 y/o woman I work with, with dishwatery blonde hair, but with perfectly placed grey 'highlights'. I loooove the color of her hair! :) I suggested the Autumn Sexy Hair Shampoo to her, so now she has wheat blonde gray highlights, with a brighter shinier neutral blonde base. It looks wonderful.

I've been slowly going grey for the past 15 years. It started out with just the front. Now, it has spread over my entire head. I just decided to go with it.

I've been using Clairol Nice and Easy. My hair isn't dried out either.:confused3

I've been dying my hair for about 10 years. I stopped when I got pregnant with my second child and I was going to let it grow out, I thought that maybe it wasn't as bad as I'd remembered. My (then) DD4 was looking at the top of my head one night and said, Mommy why do you have Grandma hair? I went out that next morning and bought another box of Nice and Easy. I was only 34 at the time.
