animal prints and not knowing what they are!! :scared1: Freaks me out! I'm always seeing tracks leading from the woods behind our house to our back yard. Makes me scared to go outside or let my kids walk to the bus. :scared1:

It could be a whole host of animals. I understand how it can be intimidating but what animals do you normally see tracks for when there isn't snow? More than likely it's the same animals but if they are coming closer than I might be a little more cautious.

BTW, I like the previous posters suggestion. As a Washington State (former Ca) resident I always keep my eyes on the lookout. After all you never know what's out there.

We came home Friday night and saw a deer on our back yard! It was so cool! The next day, the kids and I went out to see the prints in the snow...we never saw deer prints up close, in our own yard!

As we were checking those out, we discovered another animal print. Either an EXTREMELY large racoon or something else with long claws. Kids are saying bear...LOL. I don't think so.

We back up to a wooded area. Funny thing is we are right in the middle of the village. But there is a now dried up creek that ran through at some point-- and it's surrounded by woods. That is what my yard backs too. It's common for us to come home at night and see animals in the backyard-- well catch glimpses of them w/ the headlights.

We have had porcupines, deer, tons and tons of rabbits, skunks, and racoons. I think for us the porcupine was rarest since I've only seen the one around here.

Would it make you feel better to know what they are? Go to the library and get a book on the prints - to identify them. Also get a book that explains the behaviors of those animals - it might help you to know which ones won't appraoch a human or an animal larger than it is - or to know which ones are only out at night! Once you understand their behaviors, they mat not be so scary! Could be fun to learn about! :paw:

:wizard:

Don't forget that animal tracks (as human footprints) in the snow will "grow" as the snow melts a little in the warmth of day. Sometimes I look out the window and the large prints have me wondering for a second what it could be, but then I realize they are just rabbits. (We have a fence and the rabbits are the only animals that can get under it.)

wow.......did you think "we" are the only living beings on this planet" I think it is great to see the wildlife and the wonder of what is there, I am more afraid of the "wildlife" (the nuts and perverts that walk the streets!) I can't imagine being afraid of something and not even knowing what it is.....nature is wonderful....

We have rabbit prints all over the place and a few squirrels, that is about it.

Um, I never said I thought we were the only ones on this planet. Nor did I say that I didn't like wildlife or nature. I'm not sure how you read all that into my post? :confused3

What I said was I didn't like not knowing what the prints were from. I grew up in the Los Angeles area so this whole wildlife in my back yard is new to me. Excuse me if it takes some getting used to. I do enjoy nature though as do my kids. However, I would like to know exactly what nature we are talking about.

There is a difference between a deer in your back yard and a cougar (which have been seen not too far from here) especially when I have 4 kids that walk to and from the bus and play out there. I'm sorry you can't imagine being afraid. Snakes are part of nature too but alot of people are scared of them and wouldn't necessarily want them in their yard.
