Okay- don't laugh.. any advice for balding man besides expensive plugs?

Hi All!

My DH is losing his hair ( mostly the hair at the front of his head ) and he is distressed. I know he's considering plugs but they are so expensive, plugs look bloody to me, and I think he would be embarrassed by the process. So, does anyone know anything else that might help? I just feel really bad for him, I can tell he's depressed about it.

There's topical hair solution like Rogane that's proven to work. Also there's a new technology out there that's low level laser lights - doesn't hurt, can't feel a thing in fact (I have a laser because I have super thin hair and want thicker) and it actually seems to be working. Female Here, recently started Rogaine and it did wonders. But one you start to use it, it is a lifelong committment because if you stop the process will reverse. Bj's have a generic which is very reasonable. Saw results within 2 weeks.

DH got the generic at Walmart. They say Biotin helps if it's stress related. Also there are shampoos for thinning hair by Murad, but it really didn't seem to help. Thyroid levels can also be a factor, so he may want to mention it to his Dr.

Explain to him what my dad always said. God made some heads perfect, and the others he covered with hair.

Male pattern baldness is hereditary to some extent. It's probably a normal part of aging, but if he's that concerned a medical checkup is in order to rule out any deficiencies. DH tried the Rogaine for a while but I think it only works while you still have hair, it has to be used continuously, and it was associated with birth defects so I didn't want it around. DH is completely bald on top now and usually wears a ball cap to prevent sunburn.

Go to the doctor and get a prescription for Propecia. It has done wonders for DH's hair. It is pretty pricey each month, but it will be going generic before long. It is also a lifetime commitment, you must take the pill every day or you will lose the hair that has grown back in. He also uses generic rogaine each day.

Ask him if he has ever considered shaving his head. I think men who shave their heads are very sexy and so do alot of women. If you think that is attractive, talk to him about it. That sure won't hurt his ego Hair is way overrated

It is too bad he is depressed about it. I don't mind baldness at all. DH is going just a bit thin on the top/crown of his head, but it doesn't bother either of us.

Rogaine is for hair loss at the back of the head. It very clearly states there is no proven benefit from using for receding hairline type loss. That being said, just because they don't have the data to prove it doesn't mean it can't work.

You can get it as a liquid which you apply with a large dropper or as a foam.

I want to second the comment to try Nioxin.

I have seen it slow and reverse hair loss when I worked in a salon. It will not work for everybody, but it is safe to use and doesn't have strange side effects.

It's a line of hair products. You use their shampoo and a treatment solution and it breaks down hormone buildup that can in some cases be the cause of hair loss. Unlike Rogaine and prescriptions, you do NOT have to use it forever. You can use it for 6 months or so and move on. The balding process may start again, but you won't suddenly lose a lot when you stop.

He did it gradually, had the hairdresser start cutting it shorter, went to like a 1" all over for a few months then decided heck w/it & shaved it. He wears just a peach fuzz layer so he doesn't have to shave it completely bald everyday. $25 Wahl clippers & no more barber visits, he shaves his head about once a week or two.

I LOVE it, he is definitely getting better w/age! I tease him & call him my personal rock star, Daughtry.

Shave it. That's the thing to do these days. No fuss, no cost. Since it is the style, I can't even tell when I guy is doing it because he is balding or if it is just because he wants to be in style and shaves his full head of hair.

I'm partial to bald too!! My hubby shaves his head because he started losing his hair and to be honest I think he looks better! HOT... bald with a goatee... he looks tough, but he is a big teddy bear, so it cracks me up.

I am female and my hair thinned a lot when I hit my twenties. I use a cosmetic product called Dermmatch that "fills in" the thinner spots at my scalp. It costs under 30 for a container, and I have been using the same container for months. Makes me feel less self conscious, and more naural looking than spray on color.

Same here! DH had a FULL head of hair and just got tired of messing with it and figured it's gonna go some day so he bought a set of clippers and off it came. He used the lowest guide and it's just like velvet. He uses the Remington Short Cut weekly to keep it at the desired length.
