With no costume!!!!! I would say so far 1/2 had no costume and a couple put on headband ears. Then...they get picky about the candy!!! Oh can I have the kit kat instead of the sucker??? Um, wear a costume next time.

I've started giving the kids w/ no costume the crap candy and the good candy to the ones that tried. Most of the ones w/out costumes have been tweens. I think they just want the free candy.

I agree--there should be some attempt at a costume-however minimal. The economy may be a factor, though.

I'm pretty sure most kids are in favor of free candy whether they have a costume or not.

I personally don't have the energy to dictate to a kid whether or not a costume is worthy of my best candy.

The candy aint cheap! No costume, no trick or treat just a walmart bag and a "hey, I want the snickers not the smartees"

Usually I'm out w/ DS9 and DH is home passing out candy. This is my first year home but I just had surgery and can't do the walking. It's been 9 years since I've passed out candy...:scared1:

I took my 6 year old DCousin T&Ting with a couple of her friends. They had great costumes UNDER winter coats! haha :woohoo: Such is life in Northern PA!:rolleyes1

I tend to agree. I noticed it isn't just the older kids this year that didn't always have real costumes, some of the fairly younger kids didn't either. Most all the kids did have manners though. I know I used to make my daughters costumes and the past couple years haven't simply because of the time involved. Instead we have gone to costume stores and I can't get over what they want for a cheap-o costume. Could be that a lot of their parents just don't have the money to spare right now. It's Halloween - they're kids - I gave the same candy regardless of the costume with the exception of the Ariel mermaid costumes. They got extra because they were Ariel mermaids.

We have had about 200 kids at this point.....they all have benn very polite with the exception of 3.
Candy was very expensive this year but hey kids are only kids once so I go all out (I will never tell DH how much $$$).
Costumes or not I think it's fun.

Yea I guess I'm looking at it wrong. It's just more fun being out there w/ the kids. :sad1:

Be glad they didn't ask for cigarettes.. Seriously.. I had that happen on the day that I was moving out of my sister's house where my late DH & I had been temporarily living for a brief time.. I opened the door and two teenage boys (no costumes) asked for candy.. I told them I wasn't the owner of the house and didn't have any.. Their response? "Well do you have any cigarettes then??"

Costume sales were down considerably for the year, the recession is blamed. I made a point of encouraging the folks I saw in hats, headbands, or masks. They tried, with limited resources. For crying out loud, even Martha Stewart was hawking that sort of costume on her Halloween Central page.

We get kids come by the van loads and I'm happy to give the kids a safe place to trick or treat but.... If you're trick or treating with ababy you get a sticker. If you're my age (45) and have your own bag, you don't get candy. We could not believe the number of parents trick or treating. And we've noticed the number of people with porch lights on is way down this year.

I'm toying with not having my kids trick or treat in the neighborhood next year. They went to a community trick or treat on Thursday where my sister works and trick or treating at my office yesterday. It gets to be a little much so I'm starting to think of maybe doing a neighborhood party or something next year. I still might hand out candy but my kids don't need to go out again.

My DD wouldn't wear her bumble bee costume- it's too itchy. My 11 yo was going to wear his scary guy all black costume from last year but it was too small. We took them to the store and my DD wore a vampire mask and my DS wore a scary face mask. Thank goodness for my 4yo who put on his Bakugan costume as soon as he ate breakfast!
We saw one kid about 11 yo who had a white tshirt that said pirate costume on the front and back of pirate costume on the back.

Almost all of mine have been in costume, and some of them were very creative! I've only had a couple of middle schoolers stop by non-costumed. Even my son's high school friends came by to see us all decked out!

And they've all been so happy and so polite. I love this night, and all the happy, cute kids!

(My kiddo's not even home tonight, but his friends still came by to see mom and dad. I love that.)

LOL about the 11 yo smarty pants. At least he thought about it...Reminds me of the three tweens I had tonight. One was in the middle of the other two wearing a hoodie that was pulled right down covering her face. They said she was the headless horseman and the other two were her guides.

OK, just saw the cutest one....guy was a mummy, all wrapped up head to toe with toilet paper:lmao: Take that recession. :goodvibes

I had that - I asked all of them what they were. If they couldn't tell me they didn't get a treat. I think I may have miffed the older girl that said "myself" because I said, hmmmmm nope not good enough! She was being a smarty pants.

The rest of the kids mostly had costumes on. I just can't get over the older kids that were out and then looked at you when you gave them one of those smaller choc bars. :confused3

I would never dream of acting that way - my personal favorite tonight.
I was standing on the curb talking to a friend of mine and a Escalade pulled up rolled down the windows and said "3, they are all tired". Three kids, all too tired to show me their costume. I didn't even know them - so they got not the best out of the bucket - lucky to have gotten anything due to the arrogance.

But, I did love those little ones in costume that said trick or treat and thank you. The older ones didn't stop me from giving them a nice handfull.

I think our township needs an age limit next year....

DS14 said we got hardly any trick or treaters. He said it was less than 20 this year.

The weather is really icky with all the rain so I'm not surprised. I also noticed that only 5 houses on our little street had lights on so I'm sure no one bothered to come down our street since it was mostly dark.

It was fun taking DD10 out this year. We went to a different neighborhood with alot of her friends. She had a wonderful time in her Chef hat and apron. She used my Mickey Mouse apron and we picked her up a cheap Chef hat. She said it was the most comfortable costume. And she got some great comments on it including one fellow who asked her if she was going to be the next Iron Chef. LOL

We saw some great costumes too. One was the Joker from the Batman movie. There were a ton of witches and vampires out and about too. We didn't see anyone trick or treating without a costume this year. Last year we saw quite a few.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

No issues here.

The last ones we had were likely teenagers (very tall!)--but they had masks and all was good.

DS2 was done TorTing and enjoyed handing candy out. We were trying to ditch the rest of our candy, so I told him to give them lots. He was only giving them one and two pieces at a time.

The teens were very patient and very amused by my son. And they thanked him and everything.

No costume issues at all this evening and many polite trick or treaters.:goodvibes

I try not to judge those who come to the door.

I had a ninja turtle this year in a costume I remember from my own childhood. His dad was about my age so I bet it was a hand-me-down from his daddy! :) I had a flock of bunnies-3 girls about age 12 wearing fuzzy sweaters, bunny ears, and painted on whiskers. We had several princesses and a queen. Oh...and a Monkey Fireman. My 3 year old nephew wants to be a monkey fireman when he grows up, so his mommy and daddy made him a monkey suit to wear with a little fireman's coat and hat. Very cute!

Oh, I had one little boy, about 5, ask if he could take a piece of candy to his little brother, who was too scared of our spooky music to come to the door. He was so polite! "May I have one for Eli please?" Of course he could!

Wow, the Escalade people did a drive by TOT! I did not have 1 single TOT. My DD had a party earlier, then went with a friend to the housng development nearby.
