We have done both eastern and western. Overall, we like the western a little better. In fairness though, I should say that we simply had a better overall cruise experience on the western, so not everything is based on the actual ports of call. We could have been anywhere on that cruise and it would have been a great time!
But, to compare the ports of call:
Eastern - St. Maarten didn't impress us much. We got some great tropical wear for next to nothing, but otherwise the shopping wasn't worth the walk. St. Thomas was really nice, and the snorkeling on St. John was fabulous. Also, the extra sea day on the eastern is very nice.
Western - Key West was wonderful. Great shopping, good restaurants. We missed Grand Cayman on this cruise due to weather, but we've been there before and always enjoyed it.
Cozumel was also very nice, both for the nightlife (we got there the night before due to missing GC) and the shopping the next day. Our friends went on a catamaran snorkeling excursion and loved it.
I really don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide to do the western cruise. We are going on the eastern again this fall, and have already booked another western for next year!
