Ok -- This may be a stupid question

We're leavinbgin 9 days for WDW and I have seen the recent trip reports and weather forecasts that call for rain daily, and sometimes for hours.

We come from the Rockies and we just don't get much rain. If we do, i's 15-30 minutes and then--- whoosh! Bright blue sky. Also, when it rains here, it's cool, even cold.

Here's the question. We bought some of the Disney Ponchos at Kali River Rapids a couple of years ago. Will these be sufficient for rain during a real Florida rainstorm? :confused3 They are clear vinyl with hoods and have two soft plastic buttons on each side to hold the sides together. The length on them is just past your behind.

I know that we don't want to get soaked, but we are park warriors and are not likely to want to ditch out during rain.

Suggestions?

If anybosy wants tips on how to prepare and climb a Colorado Fourteener, or what ski areas to go to, or where to see the best aspen colors, I'll be happy to reciprocate!! :thumbsup2

Hey Cowboy -
We were there a few years ago in Sept and it rained every afternoon for about 15-20 minutes. Some days lighter than others, sometimes with thunder. If the rain became too heavy, we would just duck into a store or an indoor ride. You should be fine with the ponchos.

As far as the temp, it depends on the humidity that day (which you don't have in CO). If it's warm, then it will cool off some during the rain and then usually get hot/sticky after. If it's already cool, it will stay about same.

ENJOY your trip...we have 71 days till we are at the World :woohoo:

Yes, in my opinion, the ponchos you have should be fine.
I'm in Colorado too, so you may want to see some other replies!!! ;)

We have been on several trips where the forecast called for rain and (as is typically the case) they got the forecast wrong !
In most situations (during the summer months) it rains about 4pm in the afternoon and lasts an hour or two at most (even althought the forecast called for all day).
A cheap poncho is all we carry to the parks and its sufficient for these downpours. As far as constant rain (walking in it all day),thats another story.

Cowboy, you should be good to go with the ponchos you have. You might want to pick up a few cheapo ones ($1) at Target for backups.

Don't worry about the forescast. During the summer (it's still summer here in Florida) there's always a chance of an afternoon thunderstorm. Most of the time the rain is done within a hour or so.

The Mickey Ponchos are usually fine for late September showers.

Keep an eye on the weather in case an actual weather front moves in; in that case some more robust rain gear might be required, but for the normal daily showers, the ponchos will be plenty.

Advice: Un-roll them and hang them up in your hotel room at night to dry. They will last longer and not develop a mildewey smell that way.

:thumbsup2 May I say that I second this advice!
Unfortunately we did not do that on our last trip. When I pulled them out this week to start packing, we found an awful mess! UGH! They were yucky! I had to throw them away and go buy new ones! We will not forget to hang them up this trip!

Thanks for the replies everybody! Ok-- We'll go for it with the Mickey Ponchos! We're a little worried about the humidity, too, but we'll just have to see! We also have tickets for MNSSHP on the 5th and are concerned about the reports of party crashers-- but that is :offtopic:

Hey Cowboy,

I have a mustang paint by your name. He is great little yearling and we love our cowboy. I even saddled him and got on last week. No riding until next year.

Anyways, we are from the JH area and going about the same time. Also worried about the heat and humidity. Heck it is 60 out and I am in shorts.

I bought a few ponchos at the dollar store and will use them and throw away as needed during the rain. I have a complete rain stroller cover for the tot.

Enjoy! April in Star Valley, Wyoming

Hello from a fellow Coloradan. We used to go in September all the time, and never needed more than the Mickey ponchos. I can only remember a few times when it rained for more than a 1/2 or so. So, enjoy September. Crowds are amazing and the weather has always been great for us. Also, when it does rain in Florida, it does not get cold, like it does here in Colorado. So, anything heavier than the light plastic rain gear, is stifling in the heat. Have a great time!!! We don't go this year until late October.

Just got back and the ponchos are a dual edged sword.

Wearing the ponchos can be hot and make you sweat. So if its a light rain, its a toss up if you really want to wear it.

If its raining hard then of course you'll be happy you brought it.

OMG April!! I dated a girl at UW from Thayne! We moved to Colorado from Laramie (sorry married another Wyoming gal :thumbsup2 )

I know what you mean-- At kids soccer practice it was 55 degrees and they are calling for snow by Friday or Saturday....

I love Star Valley and the whole area. I worked at Jackson Lake Lodge during college and went over there many times. I also toured through Afton with UW Centennial Singers -- ever heard of them?

My only issue with the mickey ponchos is that they are too short, especially when I go to sit down. I always buy one at home ahead of time and they are always long enough to keep me dry.

OK I'm ready for Florida :sunny: -- it snowed last night!! About two inches of heavy, wet stuff down to about 8700 feet. It is beautiful out , though....

How high are you? Er, I mean at what elevation do you live?

Everyone reports that it only rains for 20 minutes...but whenever it rains on us, it rains for hours. Big, giant drops of rain, too.

The ponchos work fine - the shorter you are, the better they work. :) The problem (for me) is that if I wear one for an extended period of time, I begin to sweat and end up about as wet (and probably more uncomfortable) than I would've been without it.

Also, some ride attendants make you remove the poncho, so you get some of the water on you during that process...and it is a pain in the buttinski.

When it is hot, I go poncholess. :)

If you're going to tromp around the parks in the rain (we do!) and you're wearing tennis shoes, bring an extra pair. Sometimes they dry overnight, sometimes not - especially if it is very humid.

And puleeze do not mention the S-word again. It is hard enough dealing with the cold that has moved in. I like to go into denial at this time of year and pretend the blasted stuff isn't coming! :teeth: Gets hard to do when someone flippin brings it up! ;) :goodvibes

I've see the afternoon thundershows last as little as 20 minutes and as long as 2 hours. It varies according to the heat and humidity of the day.

HINT: If your shoes get wet, stop in the lobby and get a newspaper, and stuff the shoes full of newspaper over night. In the morning, the insides of the shoes will be dry.

Oh, I love the snow!!! Snow, snow, snow!!! :cool1:

We live at just over 5,000 feet here north of Denver. Fall is falling fast. Snow in the mountains. We spent last weekend in Winter Park and had the most beautiful snowfall on Saturday. However, I would rather be at the beach, than in the mountains, much to my husbands annoyance!!!
