Tonight parts of Britain will reach -20°C (-4°F), the same as the South Pole. We can't drive, it's too icy to walk and our airports are basically at a standstill.

Bummer.

Rich::

I know we are done to minus 6 I believe here and we had icy roads..the company that my dh works for still had them come in :confused3

I mean they drive trash trucks these things are over 20 tons and they wonder why they have wrecks??? Last year a guy was killed (not the drivers fault) he was driving down the road and there was an accident so he was slowing down for it and then someone behind him hit him and he hit the car in front of him and they slammed into the guard...I don;t understand why they would make them drive on these roads I am so worried about my dh right now I hate this time of year...

We have been notified by the autocall system for the school board that if there is any frozen precipitation overnight, school will be canceled. This is the south, even one snowflake is enough to close down the town.

Our high temp for tomorrow is is -6, that's the high! It's 1 degree right now. Schools are closed, but the airport is open.

I know you aren't used to those temperatures in the UK and it must be brutal for you guys, unfortunately that is a very normal temp here in the deep dark of winter. It was -23C with a windchill of -32C this morning. Going down to -26C tonight. It was even colder in December. I keep asking myself why we live here - oddly enough I never seem to get an answer ;) Hopefully it will get warmer soon, whereas we are stuck with ours until April at least.

Stay Warm!

I couldnt agree more, and i keep wondering why America wont let us move and work there permanatly lol..........

It has already been a long, cold winter and we spent Nov in Florida.........

-30C is crazy cold to me, but not that uncommon here in Alberta..........

I was under the impression the Britian had very cold winters.

I know, eh! DH works up in the Bonnyville area and they were shut down for 4 or 5 days before the Christmas break it was something like -45C with windchills in the -50's - they finally just sent them home until the New Year.

Sorry for the hijack OP :flower3:

Wow, that is cold. We're hovering in our low 20's but it is supposed to dip to 9 degrees on Sat. evening. That is Farenheit!

I kinda like the first stretch of bad weather, which this is for us this year, but by the time the end of Feb. and March roll around I am ready to be done with it all.

Keep warm, drink lots of tea,( ;)) and play some board games when you aren't on the DIS. We're putting in lots of firewood and I stocked up on a few things today in case we loose power. This is rather common for us and wouldn't you know we are less than a 1/2 mile from the nearest major power station. :sad2:

Keep warm everyone!

I wish I could feel bad, but we've been having lows of -12F. D:

I should look at a globe, and see in comparison, what states in the U.S., Britain would match up with.
I live in Wisconsin, and we got 8 inches of snow and the high is suppose to be below zero all next week. Life goes on, if we would stop, we would be sitting ducks till April too.

I can understand why everything is at a stand still-some places are just not equipped to deal with winter weather, than other parts of the world. My dd used to be in college in Marquette Michigan, which is in Northern Michigan, and they would celebrate and have "news" when the sun actually came out, and it wasn't snowing or cold out.

England has a similar climate to the Pacific Northwest--latitude it is about the same as the middle of Canada though :lmao:.

OP, welcome to Minnesota in the winter :lmao::thumbsup2. Heck, we got all the way up to 15F today but back down below zero for tomorrow. The warm up comes this weekend though--hopefully it will melt all this ice. No school closings for cold here--that doesn't usually happen until it is about -40F or so.

I saw on the news tonight that iguana's were freezing and falling out of the tree's somehwere in Florida. I thought they said Miami but that just doesn't seem right:confused3. They also showed one that had froze in a pool but it was revived. How the heck do you revive a frozen iguana:eek:.

There are crazy cold temperatures everywhere apparently. Here in Orlando they are talking possible snow this weekend.

I was at the Orange Bowl Tuesday night (in Miami Gardens) and at game time it was 42 degrees. It was the coldest Orange Bowl in history.

Jason

We're in Maine and temps below zero are pretty common. We usually are around 10-20F most of the winter, but we get below zero often enough to own giant puffy down jackets. :)

Its actually 33 degrees here in New Jersey. I really hate winter but anything above 32 is fine with me! Our lagoon is frozen, this is the first time in 10 years that has happened!

DS's soccer coaches are both from Scotland. They both were able to go home for the holidays, and were supposed to be back here in New England last weekend. We received an email from the head coach saying that he was still stuck in Scotland, and that 1 flight had left his local airport in 3 days. He was hoping to get on a flight yesterday, but we've not heard from him yet.

The next practice is Saturday morning, so hopefully they'll be back for that. :)

I saw that too! They said they are able to have their hearts still beat but their bodies shut down so they stay alive.

It is about 20F here. We have a few inches of snow.
