Ok, so it was a hoax, a lie

That's the thing, we were never "unsafe"...and he still whipped the city up into a frenzy! If he doesn't apologize, he should at least come out and admit that he overstated the urgency of his new conference.

President Bush suggested a few days ago that there have been at least 10 terror situations that have been thwarted by the FBI, CIA, etc. but he didn't go on TV on each one to proclaim to America that "the sky is falling!". Mayor Bloomberg went on TV here in NYC and proclaimed that it was, even though it wasn't! IMO, he overstepped his position, overstated the threat, and needlessly panicked an entire community.

For what?

If nothing else, the current emergency system was tested. That, alone, would go a long way to make me feel safer--especially considering the Hurricane Katrina debacle.

No thanks...I prefer my terror alerts honest and legitimate...not to mention the fact that false alerts only hurt the credibility of the next potential real warning!

Except that Washington was the one saying "nothing to be concerned about here."
I realize that...this time. But I stand by the point. When Bush or the Republicans have a political problem, the terror alert is raised (or, as in this case, a threat is "discovered" and released). Besides...the city of New York had to get their information from somewhere, right ?

As to why it's a bad thing...How many people said, following this "alert", that they just went about their daily business ? The problem with crying wolf too many times is simply this: when the wolf finally shows up, nobody believes you.

This past Sunday, when the alert was at its highest, Joe was supposed to come into Manhattan with me to help manage a large group of college kids who were scheduled to help paint one of our homeless shelters. When I realized that this was "the day," I asked him to stay at home, putter around, do whatever he wanted but to not come in with me since we would have had to ride the subway.

He stayed, I went, and was pretty anxious to some extent while riding down to the lower east side. Of course, nothing happened, as I suspected would be the case. But I was happy that Joe would, at the very least, not be involved in anything potentially dangerous.

When I learned about the hoax, I was angry, absolutely. But not at our own gov't, or our city officials, the cops or anyone else. I would rather they be hyper vigilant for our safety and if false information comes our way, then so be it. I was pissed at the culprit. Frankly, I'd love ten minutes alone with the idiot. Me, him and a baseball bat.
