OK people! Now heres the story. My dad brought home a cd burner from his job and we get to keep it for the week. I downloaded some MP3s, and my friend lent me a couple of cds that I don't have. Now, it is illegal or not to burn some of the cd tracks off the cds my friend has given me onto a seperate cd that I would listen to? Also, can MP3s be played on cd?
Thanks a bunch,

:bounce: Elise:bounce:

Yes, Blinky sad to say but unless YOU purchased the CD it is
illegal.

and yes you can listen to Mp3 burned onto a CD...

Good luck, have fun, happy listening what ever you decide! :D

Not all cd and dvd players will play discs containing MP3's.

If the CD has been purchased by someone and your getting the tracks off of it by them letting you borrow the cd it isn't illegal according to the Digital Milleium copyright act.

It's the same as making dubbed tapes

i thought it was only illegal if you plan on selling the cds you burn
Am I wrong?

My understanding is that you are allowed to copy what you already own for your own personal use.

Copying something that belongs to someone else or copying your own and giving it to someone else are both violations of the copywright laws.

... was it legal for your Dad to bring home a CD burner from his job...???;)

Think of all us poor studio musicians who wont get paid for that CD. Yes, it is illegal unless you already purchased the CD yourself.

The CD burner is great...I always copy my original CD's because I can't stand going out and buying a CD I already had because it scratched or was destroyed by children playing frisbee with it.

Hey if the music police come to my door I already have my arguement planned...how about all of the CD's I purchased for 1 song! (ONE SONG!!!!) they don't have singles anymore of the music I want and so yes I have to pay for the whole dang thing...gggggrrrrrrrrrrrr....I figure they owe me some money! LOL

holycow,

From what I remember of the Copyright Act what you're doing is not illegal. You are allowed to make back-up or archival copies of copyrighted material that you have purchased. It is when you start selling the burned CD's that the authorities start taking notice.

BTW, are the music police in the same department as the fashion police? ;)

If they are in the same league then I'm not too worried...the only thing I'll suffer is humiliation instead of a fine or imprisonment. LOL

I haven't sold any CD's lately although I would like to charge my kids when they take the CDs I want to listen to and I never see the CD again! LOL

I believe that you are allowed one copy of a CD that you own for your own personal use (as a backup). Otherwise, yes it's illegal.

Diane is right.... you have to keep in mind the artists and musicians that won't get paid for their work. As well as the studios, distributors and stores whose business you are stealing.

If their so worried about getting paid maybe they should put out a cd with more than 3 good songs on it for up to 18 bux.

Why buy a cd for that price when you can get a dvd packed with features for the same or less.

I haven't bought a cd in over 3 years and not sure if I ever will again.

I don't believe what you are doing is illegal. You have to be selling the copies for it to be illegal.

Not all sound systems can play songs on an mp3 format so I wouldn't convert them to mp3 before I burned them even though they take up much less space in an mp3 form.

Depends. My stereo and car CD player won't play MP3s. DH's will. To be safe, it's much easier to just burn them as WAVs. If you're just going to use them on the computer, MP3s work fine -- all computers can do that nowadays.
As for the legalities.... I'm not touching that one!

I saw this (I think on this board) and really liked it, so I kept it. Is this any different than copying music?

I don't see what's wrong with shoplifting... after all,
1. The store only gets a small amount of the price of an item--the big manufacturer gets most of it.
2. The items are overpriced. Sometimes I buy one and shoplift one to even that out.
3. Even though I shoplift, I also buy a lot of stuff too.
4. I'm a poor teen--I couldn't afford as much stuff if I didn't shoplift it.
5. Stores need to realize that shoplifting is here to stay, and no amount of technology will stop it. They need to develop a new business model that allows them to make money off shoplifters.
7. Often items are sold in multi-packs, containing stuff I don't want. This justifies my practice of opening the package and just shoplifting the item I want.
8. Millions of people shoplift, and yet the stores stay in business. It's not that big a deal.
9. Shoplifting is not as bad as torturing babies, so it's OK, right?
10. I shoplift items to see if I like them before buying more. This results in more sales of the things I like, right?

I don't see how anyone could fail to be persuaded by these arguments, and agree with me that shoplifting is perfectly OK.

shoplifting involves goods

music is a service or entertainment

Theres a HUGE difference, music used to be free, thats the way it should be.

No one in the middle ages was whining because they didn't make money for playing music

It is illegal if you don't already OWN a copy you have purchased.

So you don't think musicians should get paid to make that music for you????
