for real! :( Today my oldest starts her first day of Kindergarten. I just dropped her off.
This also marks the end of carefree days when we could plan our WDW trip for any time of the year!

DVC take me away...............................

I guess now I can focus on talking hubby into that add on. ;)

If yours is one of the schools that has two weeks at holiday time, you can do the last half of the holiday season. We loved doing that when our kids were kids! WE also have a mid October teachers union break that makes a good travel time for Disney.

My youngest starts kindergarten next Monday so I understand where you're coming from.
We used to take my oldest out for 3 days around some other scheduled days off but she will be in 4th grade this year and it is just too difficult now. Our district has a strict attendance policy and I don't want her to come back with lots to make up.
So for now we will have to live with the school calendar.
Let us know how that add on works out!:D

OK Guys....

Now you have ME bawling. My DD starts her freshman year in college next Monday. I remember going in late to work on her first day of Kindergarten and wlking to school. Seems like yesterday

Live for today

WAAAAA!!!

I am a teacher and I start back in front of MY kindergarten classroom 2 weeks from today. JUST KIDDING! I am just back from a glorious 11 day trip to WDW and Vero and I am so geared up to be back to school. I am heading to the building today to start setting up and finding a special place for my new "TEACHER MICKEY" Beanie I bought there!!!!!

My oldest starts 2nd grade on Wed. I'm dreading it. I have so enjoyed having my kids at home this summer. DD 5months has decided that sleep is not neccessary so I'm really dreading the early mornings for school! We are taking her out for a week in December, and this will probably be our last trip during school time for awhile, so I feel your pain there too! Even worse DH muttered those words that I CRINGE at "We are not going to Disney next year!" I hate when he says that!

check with your school district my brother lives south of Atlanta and they have a fall break in SEPTEMBER -wonderful time - low crowds, low points - definitely breaks any other time - well I still also love December but that is because the place is so decorated. Of course they also started last week!

Oh, Shan, feel for you! It's hard to see them grow up! Don't worry, she'll do better today than you will!

Don't worry about your vacations...All hope is not lost. I just got my son's calendar for 1st grade (new school.) He has several long weekends and some unexpected breaks. We'll have to start planning for next year! Maybe the schedule will work to your advantage. Good luck!

Renee

PS: here's a Kleenex:(

Thanks all. The day wnet by quicker than I though it woudl. She was a littel upset when I picked her up which made me cry more when I got hoem and went out of her sight!
All will be fine I know...
During the day though I took the opportunity to call my guide. ;)

I'll be singing soon as my youngest has 2 more years of high school then I can vacation anytime I want.

After looking at our school calender, I'm a bit disappointeed that there is very little to work with. Many of you mentioned different breaks your kids get, but we don't really ahve any. 3 days for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break, which hits at Easter this year (sometimes it doesn't so this will work for us time to time) but that is about it! :( They do get out early, middle of May. So we can go first of June (I have to wait until dance recitals are over.) and thsi can work for us. Still will be hot, but not all schools will be out and it is still lower points. Of course, never been at Gay Weekend. Are the crowds bad?
They do have three day weekends form time to time, but then we'd have to use thsoe higher point weekends and it is still a short trip. (We usually drive, it takes about 6 to 8 hours.)
Not the best to work with....

have faith - Shan -

In a few years I would expect all of Ga to go to the year round system - Ga seems to care alot about education.

you don't want my comments on Al!

or you could move to Henry Country - that is where my brother lives - they get the second or third week in September off.

A week in September? That woudl be nice. I think they'll end up year round, too. I imagine that woudl make it hard for parenst that both work, but nice for vacatiosn spread out throughout the year! Kinda sad to have such a short summer, though. We're big into hanging out at the pool during the summer days....

My younger child will be starting first grade the Tuesday we come back from WDW. At least last year I had him with me in the afternoons.
School hasn't stopped us from planning WDW trips....when my (going into 3rd grade) daughter was in Kdg, we took her out for 3 weeks total! Ok, that was a bit much, but this year, my kids will only miss two days, during Thanksgiving week (we also get Wed. off that week), and we figure that week at school is pretty much blow-off.
My daughter HATES missing school to go to WDW (HUH??) so we've been trying to be more selective with our time off:)

Oldest son graduated college in June, lives in Boston, still looking for a job, and his rents only paid thru Aug. I'm afraid to anwer the phone :-(

KNWVIKING

my brother is out of work again - he is a service manager for a car company - so the work has a high turn over rate - but yes it does get the whole family upset

mother will need an operation when we get back from WDW - she wants to go to WDW before she has this operation. Yes I think she is crazy. but she says she needs her Disney fix before she does in the hospital. So we are treating this trip as her birthday (she will be 82).

and tomorrow I will find out if I need one......

Life does on -

Post on the community board and see if someone can't help you find your son a job - it has happened.

Thank you Pat, might jut give it a try.

PS: I'm a service manager at a GMC dealership. While my dealership has always been very stable as far as turnover goes - the commercial truck business is much different then the car biz- I can sympathize with your brothers plight. I know several car SM's and have given up on trying to keep track of what dealership they might be at from week-to-week.

I have always taken my girls out of school for our November vacation. DH works for the airlines, so summer and Christmas vacation were impossible for him to get off work. I figured that they are only young once and since time goes by so quickly, our family vacations together were more important than school attendance. Travel is an education in itself. My DD's are now 16 and 13 and are none the worse for missing a few days of school.

My oldest daughter starts high school after Labor Day and my youngest has just been potty trained.....so I'm crying and jumping for joy at both events. I think I'll cry more when daughter #1 goes off to college in 4 years. I'm sure I'll shed tears when daughter #3 goes to kindergarten in 3 years. But I can't think that far ahead!

I just discovered tonight that the April 2004 vacation I had planned (ressies for 2BR std at BWV) are not in alignment with daughter #1's actual school vacation. The school calendar arrived today. They go back to school for two days after Easter and then take 1.5 weeks off. I'll have to pull daughter #2 out of middle school which won't make me very popular with her principal.

This makes no sense to me at all and it'll mean I'll be on the phone with Member Services first thing tomorrow to see if I can even move the ressies. I'll probably have to waitlist, but it will cost us 120+ less points. Unfortunately I borrowed points for this vacation......so I'll either have to convince someone else to come with us and get another room, plan another trip in 2004 (maybe hubbie and I?) or do some creative movements with the points to get the non-borrowed points back in our account. Oh well....I love playing the Disney game so it will keep me amused for a day or two!

I can't believe so many of you are starting school so early! We're still doing camps and trips and such.

KNWVIKING - My cousin (23) has been laid off 3 times these past 2 yrs (post 9/11) in Boston and just got a job offer at a Biotech firm. I live in the Boston area as well and was an HR mgr here for 12 yrs before my last child was born. PM me....tell me what he does/wants. Maybe I can give you some ideas to pass on to him and/or get him emailing with my cousin and her connections. You never know. She BTW....took a new apt for August without a new job and I thought she was nuts....but it worked out. Have hope. : - )

Happy Labor Day:cool:
