Just got back from hanging out and I'm a lil confused. Kev said he likes me but doesn't want a relationship bc he's not ready. . .I am SOOOOOO confused now. Help?

OK so here's the scoop. Kev and I talked for a while last night and he said that he likes me and thinks I'm really cute but he doesn't want to get my hopes up about this going any further than friends bc he doesn't think that he deserves to be happy (his x has him convinced of that) . He says that he can't trust anyone anymore because he'll just end up hurt. That kinda hurt me bc I believe that trust is earned not given freely. He says he's gonna wait till college to date again. I doubt that he really does that. I am trying so hard to bring his spirits back up. I just don't like to see people sad or hurt. He is such a great guy and he doesn't deserve to be treated the way he was. He is a gentleman and nice and funny and cute and sweet. . . I think that if someone decides to hurt you that badly then they weren't even worth your time in the first place. He REALLY loved this girl and it hurts me to see him hurt . Not because I like him but because he's my friend and he was there for me when I was going through everything with my x. Anyone have any advice? I could really use some. I want to make him smile again.
