What do you do in Amish country? Where do you stay? Favorite local restaurants?

My DBF and I usually go to the area around Berlin, OH because it seems to have the most to do, but Ohio Amish country is a pretty big area so there are tons of towns you could go to. It has a lot of specialty shops (especially cheese, Christmas and chocolates) and antique stores within walking distance of each other down the main street of the town. They also have an area up the street that does buggy rides and Amish home tours (I think it's called Schrocks); I know there is some charge for both, but I can't remember how much since we haven't done either in a few years. There are also 1 or 2 Amish run buffets in the general area that all have really good homemade food. I have no idea about lodging though since it's only a day trip for us.

I had won a nights stay at a resort in amish country called inn at honey run. never got to use it but place seemed nice. it was in millersburg, oh

My favorite restaurant is Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen in Mount Hope. Yum!
Boyd and Wurthman's is a small diner in Downtown Berlin, it's really good.
The Farm at Walnut Creek was a lot of fun. You ride a horse drawn wagon through and there are farm animals along with zoo type animals. There are also 2 Amish Homes you can tour.
A great place for baked goods is Hershberger's in Charm. They have fruits and vegetables and flowers for sale. They also have a petting zoo type place.
If you go to www.visitholmescounty.com they have all sorts of info on lodging, restaurants, things to do and events.
We liked the Carlisle Inn in Walnut creek. Cricket Hill Cabins was great, no TV's though. Fields of Home Guest House is nice as well as Miller Haus Bed and Breakfast (wonderful views in the country). I also really liked the Oak Ridge Inn.
There are two places uptown in Berlin that are plain and simple and inexpensive but pristinely clean and they are Zink's Inn and Berlin Village Inn.
As someone else mentioned there are ton's of craft shops and antique shops and little gift shops and markets. Lots of furniture stores, some with local Amish Made furniture.
The area is beautiful and worth seeing at least once.

We used to live minutes from Amish Country and went often.

We moved 10 years ago but decided to cut through on our way back to visit family last year. I was shocked at the commercialization, it basically is Ohio's version of Gatlinburg now. I joked as we drove out Ohio 39 all that was missing was the dinner shows, but a mile or so outside of Berlin we found that too.

Some Amish staples remain.
As stated above, Boyd and Wurthman in Berlin is a great homemade food stop, my parents eat there often.
Cheese shops-I like the Guggisburg shop between Berlin and Millersburg. The baby swiss is the best I've ever had, the prices are fantastic. They have some types of cheese for $1.99 a pound this month.
We liked the Amish bakery in Berlin right where 39/62 meet, but their prices were outrageous. We'll need to find a new bakery.

My opinion would be to get a good map, and travel the back roads-that's true Amish country. OH39/US62 have become tourist traps.

Comfort Inn downtown Berlin, Oh.
It is pretty much in th center of all the main places, and a lot of the tourist spots are off the main drag.
My family likes all the cheese shops and the samples they have.
As far as restaraunts go, there is one across the parking from Comfort Inn and it is great, and they have a buffet option.

The other and most popular is Der Dutchman, amazing food fresh from their farms.

Just a couple of side notes, Fall is extremely busy due to colors of all the trees, and an enournmas amount of seniors touring.

Most places are closed on Sundays, and during the week they tend to close about an hour before sundown due to all the horse and buggies. The flipside of it is they open as early as sunrise. Nothing like walking into a bakery and smelling the fresh baked coffee cakes and cincnamon rolls!

It will take at least one day to try to take in all there is to do. I live only 3.5 hours away from there and would go at least once a month if my DW would let me.

It is a polar opposite of the Disney hustle and bustle.

Totally agree on the Guggisberg cheese! The baby swiss is their signature cheese and I also love the fact you are not obligated to buy a 3lb wheel like some of the others.

I will be sure to bring a cooler to bring back all my goodies!

We love to stay at the Amish Door Inn. Ask for a room with a view side. Their restaurant and bakery are good, too.

The Amish Door and the Inn at Honey Run are both very nice and very popular.

For interesting shopping, head to Lehman's Hardware Store (which is so much more than hardware) in Kidron, Ohio. This is a huge "everything old fashion" store where you can still by hand-cranked washing machines, etc. They also sell interesting bottled sodas from all over the place (old school, private label stuff)......

When I went, we mostly ate and relaxed. We stayed at White Oak Inn. The owners are very interesting former musicians and the wife is an awesome cook! We did some antique shopping and toured through the countryside. We also went to Yoders Amish farm ( I think that's the name). They gave a nice overview of Amish culture, traditional and more "liberal" homes, cooking practices. I so wish I could remember the name of this restaurant we went to at a gas station down the street from our Inn. It was SO GOOD!!!!!!!!! I'm picky about country food, as I make my share of it at home. But chicken pot pie was awesome and strawberry pie too. I don't even like pies baked by other people ( especially not strawberry pie, yuck!), but I was ready to bring a whole pie back home! Amish country isn't a place I would take most kids unless they really enjoy peace, nature and heavy food, as the pace is really slow. My 17 y.o. brother would have sat in the car texting if he had come with us.

I agree, but it is possible to get away from those heavily commercialized blocks. DH and I were surprised too! In fact I likened I to Main Street at WDW minus the cute Victorian look. Guggisburg had some awesome mustard as well as cheese. It's a great spot for pictures too.

We took a group of girl scouts every year for 3 days. The highlight of the trip was "Trumpet in the Land", an outdoor drama.

We go to the Berlin area about once a summer, we stay at the Berlin Grande Hotel, love it! Use a AAA discount if you can too to save some money. The other place we stay if available is The Graystone Cottages, they are seperate little houses that are fantastic too! We love alot of the resturants, but have discovered a pizza place called Park Street Pizza in Sugar Creek that is must for us every trip we take, this is just the best in the area or anywhere is IMHO:rotfl: We love going to Berlin and the area, its a nice getaway and the kids enjoy it too:)

We always eat at the Amish Door when we go. Don't forget about Heini's Cheese (free samples) and great cheese. Also Breitenbach's wine and cheese place. Coblentz chocolate.

We like the Inn at Sugarcreek. They have a great breakfast that is included. They also have popcorn and fresh baked Amish cookies.
Der Dutchman is our favorite place to eat. The bakery next door to it has best, fat donuts.

The correct website is visitamishcountry.com

I grew up in Holmes County & would be glad to answer any questions. :)

We like to stay at http://www.berlinhotelandsuites.com/
In Amish country everything closes at 5:00 p.m so there is very very little to do after 5. We like to stay here because they have a movie theater which is free for hotel guest. There is a very lovely outdoor seating area with several natural gas fire pits where you can just sit and star gaze.

There is also a nice pool.
