Ohhh lalaaaaaa!! Look at the dollar SOAR

Royal Bank says .8003 at the moment....

$1.25 Cdn buys $1.00 US.

The big question is....will it get any better? Do I rush down and buy? Or do I hang on for a bit yet, and take the chance it will dip again?:confused3:scared:

I just opened a US $ account & transferred $150 into the account just to get it started. I got $120.39 US for $150 CND. When looking at the total cost of the trip it's still pretty scary! :scared1:
We can only dream that the dollar will ever be at par again!

p.s. hi roscoe ;)

I'd say it depends how much you are buying? Thousands..it could make a big difference if it drops. Hundreds--not so much. Maybe buy half now-half later?:confused3

Yes, thousands, make a HUGE difference. The last time it was at 1.27, I paid off our Land and Sea trip, wanting to get it done before it jumped back up to 1.29. Guess WHAT? The very next day it dropped! It dropped to 1.26 then 1.25 and now 1.23 or 1.24. I've spent $400.00 more than I needed to!
On the flip side, now is a good time to buy our spending cash!

We switched some today too as we are off to Disneyland in 2.5 weeks! Nice that it is going our way a bit better now as it wasn't when we booked our flights from Seattle. :cool1:

I knew I hadn't worded that correctly--:confused3
I meant I transferred online from my chequing to my USD account and that was the rate. Sorry if I got you all excited for nothing!

Hey Minnie56, hope I'm not being too nosey, but can I ask what bank you're with? I'm with CIBC and have a USD account with them. I can see it on my online banking, but it won't let me transfer from my CAD chequing into it.

I called them up and they said I had to go into a branch to transfer from my CAD to my USD account! Only way to get money into it is at the teller or to deposit US cash at one of the USD enabled ATM's.

I'm looking around now at other banks and this would be a very useful option.

Salinger, that is the same with me-BMO-BUT I have an ING account. Within that account, I have several mini-accounts. One is a US$ account. I transfer money from my-ready......MICKEY account, into my US (ING) account each pay. When I need to pay off my US Mastercard, I transfer money from the ING US$ account into the BMO US$ account. Confused yet? :lmao: For me, it works!

The US account I just opened is BMO. The bank told me to do the transfer myself from one of my other accounts using online banking. They said I would "get a better rate" (I assume they meant than if I came into the branch and had the teller do it). My account appears online, but I haven't tried doing a transfer yet. I hope it works! (esp. since the bank told me to do the transfers myself)

Not at all~ I am with RBC...my friend is with CIBC and she can't transfer from her chequing to her USD acct either. This works very well for me...I can send it over easily when I see the price is favourable!

Thanks everyone for the info! That's exactly what I want to do Minnie. Sometimes our dollar spikes up for just a day or two, and I'm not going to rush to the branch to transfer money over. If I could just transfer it over online, that would be so great. I could build up a nice little nest egg of USD there adding to it every so often, so that having money to spend in WDW would be virtually painless!

See, the DIS boards are so educational, and not just about Disney!! Thanks again all! :lovestruc

I'm getting down to single digits and still need to get some US money, what is happening to our poor loonie?

I have decided to pay off my trip now in little increments so the exchange rate shock won't hit me so hard. Just paid another $200 today, only $900 left! Yeah!:cool1::cool1:

I was on my BMO account today, and I looked at the transfer page. Guess what! I can now transfer money between Canadian and US $$ accounts. There's even an exchange calculator there. Thanks for the heads up! I'll still save most of my money in the ING account, but in a pinch, I know that I can transfer with no problem. I still have to go in to pay the US credit card, though, I think.

Wouldn't you just be able to add your US credit card (assuming it's BMO) to your online billers list and then pay it online from your US $ account? I haven't done this yet since I haven't had to (won't actually be paying for our trip for quite a while), but that's what I was hoping to do.

I bought most of my American money today, $1645 CDN was equal to $1300.00 US with my "contacts" bank discount. I hope that is enough hand on cash for two weeks. We are on the DDP and I am going to try and keep indulgent spending to a minimum, that is very hard for me to do....I need a 12 step program. Seriously!!
Both of my girls have $300.00 US each and that is what they will be buying all of their souveiners from!
