Just wanted to put in my two cents' worth. After all of the debates about the new 'Ohana menu, I was nervous for us to have our first experience there on 10/8. Would the food be horrible? What about the supposedly amazing wontons that are no longer there? And the pineapple bread??
Well, all I can say is WOW. I have never, and I mean NEVER, eaten so much in my whole life. Not even at Thanksgiving! The wonton "chips" were amazing - we ate the whole bowl, and it was just about the only thing that my DS2 would eat. The salad was good, but who wants to eat regular-old salad when there are so many other things to try? We all loved the chicken wings (even DD5 - and I don't normally eat them) and the hot towels to clean off our hands was a nice touch... The shrimp was great, too. Messy to peel it yourself, but by that time my hands were coated with the honey glaze from the wings so who cared?
We all LOVED the potatoes. Still don't really see how they're polynesian, but who cares - they were GOOD and we ordered seconds. I ate all of the veggies (great pea pods - not at all mushy), and we loved all of the meats, although the turkey was a bit dry. Kids had fun doing the coconut races (no hula-hoops while we were there). And then the dessert - OH MY GOSH! I normally hate bread pudding, but this was so good... we actually ordered a second serving of it!
My kids loved it as much as us. We did not order separate kids meals from Kona. There was enough there for both of my kids to try, and I was surprised by how much DD5 ate (wings, chips, shrimp, potatoes, sausage and steak). DS2 favored the chips and the ice cream! Bookends for his meal.
We were seated within 10 minutes of our ADR (even though the restaurant was full) and our cousin "Arturo" was fabulous. Gave us really good service, even though multiple people brought out food to us. He kept his eye on our drinks and kept us rehydrated. For those who would ask, we were not on the dining plan.
Anyone who is questioning whether or not to try this after all of the menu changes, I would say definitely give it a chance. Again, I was not there previously so had nothing to compare it to, but our family has found a new first night tradition!
